Indian softball opens at HOME Feb. 1st

Indians home baseball opener FEB. 2nd

Indians defeat Denmark Tech on the road, 83-81

The USC Salkehatchie Indians were sitting at 2-1 in Region X play after three road games. USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett was looking for one more win on the road, "I told our guys that Denmark Tech was going to be ready to play us. We look at several other teams in the Region as rivals and Denmark Tech always guns for us. They just got a new coach yesterday and I don't know what he could have put in since his hiring."
Denmark Tech came out in the first half ready to take it to the Indians and they did early leading by as many as 11-points early on. The Indians were able to fight back but trailed 38-27
at the half.
In the second half it was all Indians until late in the half, they would retake the lead with 9:30 remaining 54-50.
The Indians would extend the lead to as many as 12-points but Denmark Tech would give it one more go but fell short 83-81.
"It was a dogfight tonight, I thought we played them hard in the second half but you can't win every game like that. We have to learn to play from the tip-off until the final buzzer. We missed 12 free throws tonight and we have to work on that as they are going to be crucial in tight games. I will take tonight's win, it is hard to go on the road four straight games in this region and come out with three wins," said coach Garrett.
The Indians beat Clinton Jr. College Monday night in Clinton 58-57.
They will finally be back at home February 8th against Cape Fear with the tip-off set for 7:00 pm.

Coach Garrett's Annual Fish Fry Friday, February 1st on the East Campus in Walterboro, SC

Emilio Parks recognized by the CIAA as Newcomer of the week. This is the second time this season Emilio has been recognized

Hampton, VA " Johnson C. Smith University head men's basketball coach Stephen Joyner, Sr., along with senior guard Trevin Parks (Hickory, NC) and sophomore forward Emilio Parks have been recognized by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) as the Coach, Player, and Newcomer of the Week, respectively. This is a third time honor for Trevin, a second for Emilio and a first for Joyner this season.

This week, Joyner showed why he's the active coaching czar in the CIAA with three blowout conference wins. First, Joyner led the Golden Bulls to an 85-52 road victory over VA Union. The next night JCSU earned an 88-69 win against Chowan on their home floor. Two days later, the Golden Bulls knocked off the top team in the Northern Division (ECSU) for an 89-57 win. JCSU earned three wins in four nights and outscored their opponents by a combined 84 points.

Trevin Parks averaged 26 points and 5.6 assists in three games played this week; all victories. Parks scored 32 points in an 89-57 win over the top team in the Northern Division, Elizabeth City State. Despite the high point total, he is still shooting an impressive 51% from the floor and averaging four assists on the season. Parks has four games this year where he has scored 30-plus points.

Emilio Parks continues to make his mark in the CIAA by scoring and rebounding. In three wins this week, Parks averaged 15.6 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 58% from the field. On the road against VA Union, Parks produced a double-double of 18 points and 12 boards. The very next night, he put up 19 points and nine rebounds versus Chowan.

Indians fall 83-81 in final game prior to start of Region X play

Travis Garrett head coach of the USC Salkehatchie Indians men's basketball team was looking to use Thursday night's game as a launching point into Region X play. "I knew we needed to step up our game tonight against Gray Military, they have a lot of talented players. When you are going up against this type of competition, you would expect your guys to respond," said Garrett.

The Indians came out early with what looked like a great game plan against Gray Military, with the score 14-14 with 11:22 left in the first half.
The Indians would take a 11-point lead at one point but as Gray Military would continue to fight back, the Indians found themselves only leading 41-34 at the half.
In the second half, the Indians came out of the locker room with the lead but by the time clock hit 10:22, the score was knotted up again 50-50.
The game would go back and forth down the stretch but after a couple missed opportunities by the Indians, Gray Military Academy would earn the 83-81 victory.
"I am very disappointed in our play tonight, we have to learn to play defense but more importantly we have to learn to play with heart. I am telling you that once we start Region play next week, I am going to find five guys that want to play basketball. We are heading down the stretch and right now we are limping but I know with a little effort, we can get it done," said coach Garrett.

Former Indian making impact for University of Charleston (WV)

URBANA, Ohio -For the second straight night a second half surge allowed the University of Charleston men's Basketball team to pull away from their opponent. This time Urbana fell victim to a 51 point effort as the Golden Eagles were victorious 89-61, Wednesday evening.

Urbana (6-8), a founding member of the Moutain East Conference that Charleston will join next season, held a three point advantage on their home court five minutes into the contest after the team had already traded places three times at the top of the leaderboard. Eagle-eyed Evan Faulkner (Sandyhook, Ky.)squared up from behind the arc at the 14:41 mark to drill his second three-pointer of the night to erase the final advantage the Blue Knights would see. Quincy Washington (Florence, SC) quickly stole the ball and put it in the net on the next possession to give Charleston the lead it never had an issue protecting.

The teams went on a four minute scoring drought before UC leading scorer Terrell Lipkins (Canton, Ohio) got the action started again with a slick slash to the rim. For much of the final 10 minutes of play the Golden Eagles held an eight point lead before finally breaking through to double-digits with a lay-in by Robbie Dreher (Greenville, SC) at the 2:32 mark. From this point Urbana never found its touch to cut into the lead as the University of Charleston held a 38-25 lead headed into the break.

A 10-to-2 run started the second half on a quick note for the Golden Eagles. Just as on Monday night against Davis & Elkins nearly every shot seemed to be finding net in the final 20 minutes of play.

Just five minutes into the final period Aleksander Kesic (Belgrade, Serbia) converted a three-point play the hard way to put UC ahead 54-34. Head coach Mark Downey continued to rotate in his deep bench who cruised through the final minutes of play, even having their own shooting success and extending the lead on the scoreboard.

The game was never in jeopardy as the 30 point lead came with five minutes still to play and all 13 Golden Eagle players getting extended minutes. 51 points were tallied in the last half of play to secure the 89-61 win as the visitors shot 52 percent from the floor.

On the night UC converted 20 Blue Knight turnovers into 24 points, while a 48-to-32 rebounding edge allowed Charleston to benefit from 22 second chance points.

Faulkner, Lipkins and the hot-handed Hayden Annett (Portland, Australia) paved the way offensively for the Golden Eagles with 14 points each. Lipkins directed the offense to a tune of six assists and six steals, as well.

Washington booked a career-high 13 points and seven rebounds in the victory, while Dreher rounded out the double-digit scorers at points to go along with a team-high eight rebounds.

Indians fall to #19 Middle Georgia 74-65

The USC Salkehatchie Indians were glad to be back at home after twelve straight games on the road but facing the #19 team in the NJCAA, Middle Georgia College was not a dream come true for Indians head coach Travis Garrett.

"They are a very good basketball team, they have proven in their first ten games of the season, they are ready to play. The come in tonight's contest with a 9-1 and we will have to bring our A game if we expect to compete," said Coach Garrett.

In the first half, the Indians lead from the opening tip-off through much of the half.
Middle Georgia would retake the lead with under a minute as they lead the Indians at the half, 34-30.

In the second half Middle Georgia would struggle to find a rhythm against the Indians defense early and it wouldn't get much better throughout the half.

The Indians managed to pull within a point 54-53 with 8:00 remaining but after that Middle Georgia extended it's lead by seven with 1:07 left.

Middle Georgia would go on to earn their 10 victory on the season by a final of  74-65.

Middle Georgia head coach Scott Moe said after the victory, "USC Salkehatchie pushed us tonight and we really needed that after the long holiday layoff. I told my guys when you are ranked, everyone is going to be gunning for you."

The Indians fall to 5-10 on the season.

"I said before the game we would have to bring our best and we did for a while in the contest. We have to learn how to close out games and take good quality shots. We have two more non-region games to get ready and then we will see what we are made of once we start region play," said Coach Garrett.

The Indians will be back in action January 10th at 7:00 pm at home in Walterboro, South Carolina to face Gray Military Academy.
