Andrews High School’s Glen Lambert will continue his soccer career at the University of South Carolina - Salkehatchie.
Lambert has been playing soccer since he was 4, but really started taking it seriously when he got to high school and joined the varsity squad.“It’s just who I am,” he said. “I don’t know life without soccer.”When Lambert was a sophomore, the son of one of his coaches, Shane Maglich, got a college scholarship. That’s when he began talking to his coaches about what it took to get a scholarship. Now Lambert’s younger teammates are hoping to follow his path. Maglich called Lambert a smart kid and a great student who plays fast and aggressively on the field.Chris Hapeshis coached Lambert before transferring to Georgetown High.“He has a good attitude, and he’s a tough defender,” Hapeshis said. “He’s a good student too, which will help him in college.”Lambert has also been playing club soccer, which was a key to getting him into college, according to Hapeshis.“The high school season is only three months so that club season really fills in the gap,” Hapeshis said. “Where we are, club play is head and shoulders above high school.”It will also make the transition to college easier for Lambert, Hapeshis added.
Lambert said his favorite Andrews soccer memory was a tournament last year during which the Yellow Jacket won by six points in every game to take home the title.“It was a really exciting moment,” he said. Lambert wants to be a nurse specializing in bone and muscle rehabilitation. He expects to spend two years at USC - Salkehatchie and then finish his degree at a bigger school.
It was a multi-generational celebration for Lambert, who was joined at his signing ceremony on Monday by his great-grandmother, Marie Hinson, his grandmother, Pennie Payne, and his father, Bert Lambert.
