The USC Salkehatchie Indians only lead 36-22 at the half but in the second half things really took off for the Indians.

The Indians came out and quickly jumped out to a 20-point lead 59-39 with 12:36 left in the second half.

They would lead by 27 at one point, in the end the Indians offense was too much for the Panthers and the final was Salk 101, Denmark Tech 79.

The Indians are now 13-8 on the season and 3-2 in Region X. Denmark Tech falls to 4-8 overall and 0-4 in Region X.

The Indians jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and never trailed in the first half.
The would lead by 10-points or more from the 9:00 minute mark, eventually going up by as many as 14. The score here in Walterboro, SC is the Indians 36, Panthers 22.

USC Salkehatchie can't shake tough first half against SMC

USC Salkehatchie couldn't overcome a terrible first half against Region X foe Spartanburg Methodist College tonight in Spartanburg, SC.

The Indians went on a ten minute stretch in which they were unable to score a basket. "We had a horrible first half and just dug ourselves a hole that ended up being too deep to crawl out of. We did a terrible job with shot selections and when we drove the basket, we couldn't finish on simple layups," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians trailed at the half 32-14.

In the second half, the Indians would find themselves right back in the game with 4:22 remaining and only down by six.

SMC would hold on to their leading adding to it to earn the victory 61-52.

The Indians are now 12-9 on the season and 2-2 in Region X play, they will be back in action at home on Thursday against Denmark Technical College in an important Region X match-up.

USC Salkehatchie dropped their first Region X game of the season last night against Aiken Technical College, 63-54.

The Indians are now 11-7 on the season and 1-1 in Region X play. They will be back in action this Saturday against Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, NC another Region X foe. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 pm.

Indians 1-0 in Region X after 87-70 victory over USC Sumter~

The USC Salkehatchie Indians men's basketball team traveled to USC Sumter for the first time in modern basketball history to face the Fire Ants in a Region X game.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett knew it would be a task with the amount of fans that support the Fire Ants, "I told our guys to expect a large and loud crowd, they didn't disappoint. I love games like this, you find out what your team is made of."

To start the game, neither team seemed as though they wanted to take control. USC Salkehatchie lead 8-7 in the first three minutes. With 8:17 left in the first half, the Indians lead 27-16 before a USC Sumter time-out. Once they resumed play, the Indians went on a 13-0 run, in large part due to sophomore Randall Black's three-pointers. He would hit four in a row to help give the Indians a 40-16 late in the first half.

The Indians lead the Fire Ants at the half 47-27.

In the second half it was all Indians as they jumped out to a 24-point lead midway through the half.

"I was glad to see our guys come out ready to play tonight. I was looking for certain things both offensively and defensively and I saw them. I left some of the other guys get some playing time tonight because we have a long stretch ahead of us in the coming weeks," said Coach Garrett.

The Indians went on to earn an 87-70 victory over the Fire Ants. The Indians improve to 10-6 on the season and 1-0 in Region X play.

The USC Salkehatchie mens basketball team starts their quest for the Region X tonight in Sumter, South Carolina VS USC Sumter.

This will mark the first meeting between USC Salkehatchie and USC Sumter in the modern era, this season marks the return of basketball at USC Sumter.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett said, " We are looking forward to tonight's game, it will be a challenge. I don't want people to be fooled because this is their first year back, they have a talented squad and we will have to bring our A-game. I told our guys all week at practice, we will have to focused because I expect Sumter to have a huge crowd."

Indians drop non-region game to Middle Georgia 72,59

The USC Salkehatchie Indians came out in tonight's game a little sluggish early possibly due to the long layoff. In the first half, the Indians trailed 18, 10 early to Middle Georgia with 7:04 remaining.

They would get things together before the end of the half, with the score tied 28-28 at the half.

"We never came out and played with authority early on, it was like we were going through the motions. I thought after we talked in the locker room, we would come out and play a better half," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

It wouldn't come to pass for the Indians as Middle Georgia would jump out to an early 46-36 lead in the second half.

The Indians had a chance with just until 6:00 minutes left in the contest, trailing 53-51.

After that it was all Middle Georgia down the stretch, the would pull away as the final was Middle Georgia 70, USC Salkehatchie 59.

The Indians fall to 9-6 on the season, they will be back in action January 13th as they start Region X play against USC Sumter in Sumter, South Carolina.

"We didn't play our game tonight, it was a very disappointing game from a coaching standpoint. I hope the guys will learn from tonight and understand that you have to play with intensity and focus each game. I have preached this over and over, no one is going to lay down for you and let you win," said Coach Garrett.

I recently sat down with USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett to discuss the first half of the season and what he thought the second half holds for his Indians~

Q: Your team has started 9-5 this season, what is the difference between this team and others in the past that have struggled early?

A: I have had players that have stepped up to the challenge this year and played hard from the get go, in the past we had players that came in and played timid. I can say this season, we have on not competed in two of the fourteen games so far. We have played more relaxed, cut down on turnovers and went up hard on the boards.

Q: You have been on the road for twelve of the first fourteen games, how will it feel to be back home?

A: Oh it is going to be great! I am excited to get back and see our faithful fans, I hope with the success with have had early it will bring new out to see what we are about. We set a goal early this preseason to stay undefeated at home.

Q: What can fans expect out of Region X this season?

A:The Region is going to be wide open, our goal from day one has been to compete in every game and make it to the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas. We have played quality teams early and I think that will be a huge benefit once Region play starts. We are going to have to earn everything we get, we have a ton of very good teams in the region.

Q: With the second half getting underway, will we see any new players this semester?

A: Emilio Parks will be a new edition, tomorrow night will be his first home game this season. He will really be an asset for the Indians will his rebounding skills, I am looking forward to him playing in front of his home crowd. I think people will be impressed with his skill set.

USC Salkehatchie earns TRIPLE OT win vs Gulf Coast

PANAMA CITY — The only time the lead was safe was after the game’s final buzzer.
South Carolina-Salkehatchie survived a triple-overtime battle of attrition with Gulf Coast Thursday night, securing a 125-122 victory over the host Commodores in the Gulf Coast Holiday Classic at the Billy Harrison Field House.
The Indians’ Randall Black fired in a go-ahead 3-pointer to give his team a 124-122 lead with 16 seconds left. Gulf Coast’s Jose Rodriguez, who poured in 37 points, missed a heavily contested 3-pointer in the game’s waning seconds.

Gulf Coast fell to 8-6 with the loss. The Commodores will face Aiken Tech Friday at 4 p.m. during the tournament’s second day.
Marcus Humose produced a three-point play to give Gulf Coast a 122-121 lead with 43 seconds left, but GC couldn’t generate another point offensively. After Salkehatchie regained the lead, Joe Mondo made a free throw with 1.9 seconds left to provide the final margin.
“Salkehatchie did a great job making shots,” GC coach Jay Powell said. “We made some big plays, but when it came down to it, they made big shots. They deserve all the credit for that.”
GC trailed by seven (114-107) with 30.7 seconds left in the second overtime before staging a remarkable rally to extend the game. Alan Love was fouled on a putback and converted the three-point play to pull the Commodores within 114-110.

Leonard Smith scored a bucket and was fouled with 14 seconds left. He missed the ensuing free throw, but the ball ricocheted off an Indians player and rolled out of bounds. After GC’s Terrence Townes had his shot blocked, a mad scramble for possession of the ball ensued. GC missed a pair of putback attempts before Leonard Smith tied the game at 114-114 with 4.1 seconds left.

Gulf Coast led 80-78 with five seconds left in regulation when the Indians’ Emilio Parks corraled a pass at halfcourt, where he was smothered immediately by GC’s Roland Brown. Needing desperately to get a shot in the air, Parks threw the ball haphazardly toward the basket, where Washington was positioned perfectly to collect it and quickly score a layin with four-tenths of a second left on the clock to send the game to overtime.

Jimmy Givens and Quincy Washington scored 31 and 30 points, respectively, for the Indians. Teammates Robert Brown and Torrance Outing posted 15 points apiece.
Following Rodriguez’s lead offensively, Alan Love scored 20 points and was one of six Commodores to score in double figures. Terrence Townes had 16 points, Chad Frazier 15, and Roland Brown and Smith 10 apiece.

Gulf Coast spent more than half of the game (26 minutes total) shooting free throws in a bonus situation, but the Commodores didn’t capitalize fully at the foul line. GC made 34 of its 53 free throw attempts (64 percent). The Indians made 31 of 48 (64.5 percent). The teams combined for 72 fouls, and nine players fouled out.

"This was the most points one of my teams have scored since I have been at USC Salkehatchie. We jumped out 8-0 to start the game but we got lazy and didn't execute. I was proud of the way we never gave up in the game. We will build on this and move forward, it was a great win for the program," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

Indians fall 80-73 to Allegany College of Maryland~

CUMBERLAND — Casey Roberts led all scorers with 25 points in an 80-73 win for Allegany College of Marlyand over USC-Salkehatchie in the first round of the Allegany College of Maryland Christmas Classic Friday night.

Allegany was stagnant offensively in the first half, scoring just 29 points and trailing by four.The Trojans exploded for 51 second-half points and pulled away to clinch a seven-point victory.Ricky Mosley added 13 points for Allegany, Darrion Tillman and Darnell Turner each had 11 points and 10 rebounds, Cam Johnson recorded eight points and seven rebounds.

Jimmy Givens led Salkehatchie with 21 points. Hagerstown (11-1) defeated Westchester 84-82 and will play Salkehatchie in the first game today of the Christmas Classic at 2 p.m. Allegany will play Westchester at 4 p.m.

USC Salkehatchie set to face The College of Allegany Maryland tonight at 7:00 pm

The USC Salkehatchie Indians traveled to Allegany, Maryland a 10-hour trip for two games, the first tonight against the host The College of Allegany (4-7) at 7:00 pm.

"It was a long trip but after getting here yesterday, we were about to hold a practice and I was impressed with the teams focus. We also had a light shoot around this morning that went well, the kids seem to understand why we are here. We are facing two quality teams in which we will have to bring our A game, I told the kids, lets leave Maryland with an 8-2 record, that's our goal," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians will face Hagerstown (10-1)tomorrow at 2:00 pm.

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball team is traveling to Cochran, Georgia to face Middle Georgia college tonight at 7:30 pm.

The Indians enter the contest with a 4-1 record and Middle Georgia sits at 3-2.

"It is going to be a challenge for us tonight, Middle Georgia always has a very competitive team. I told our guys that they will have 4,000 fans on hand with a strong student section, we have to play our game and block all that out. I look forward to a great game," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

Out for the Indians tonight, Ronald Black (knee) and Jimmy Givens (sick), the two have combined for over 30 points per game.

Former Indian garners attention from Baseball America

Former USC Salkehatchie Indian Ali Williams, now with the Kansas City Royals organization, recently garnered attention from Baseball America.

Williams was recently named “Closest to the Majors” as well as “Most Intriguing Background” in a recent review of the Royals’ 2011 draft class by Baseball America. The Sumter, S.C., native has a fastball that reaches 96 mph as well as a “decent” slider that could see him move to the bullpen quickly. Williams earned “Most Intriguing Background” due to his relationship to Hall of Famer Larry Doby, the first black player in the American League. Doby is a cousin of Williams’ father.
A right-handed pitcher, Williams played two seasons at USC Salkehatchie, prior to transfering to Charleston Southern University. Williams was taken by the Royals in the 34th round of the 2011 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Williams made his professional debut with Arizona League Royals on July 9, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up one run off of two hits with six strikeouts. He finished the season 1-1 with an ERA of 3.89, striking out 35 batters and giving up 43 hits and 16 earned runs in 13 games.

The conversation started rather simply, with a question about his selection into Coastal Carolina University’s athletics hall of fame, but sure enough, Jess Dannelly was quickly knee-deep in a colorful story.
Within minutes he was telling about farmers driving their trucks full of cantaloupes and watermelons to the softball field in his hometown of Ehrhardt for evening men’s league games back in the 1970s.
Ever the storyteller, one tale bled into the next and then another as Dannelly sat in his office Wednesday afternoon, talking for well over an hour about how he ended up at Coastal Carolina and the highlights of his nearly three decades involved with Chanticleer athletics.

As former CCU athletic director Warren “Moose” Koegel would say later over the phone, “Jess is Coastal Carolina University throughout his whole body and his family.”
And Friday night, in a ceremony inside Coastal’s Adkins Field House, Dannelly’s extended CCU family will formally recognize him for his contributions to the university as one of five new inductees into the school’s Sasser Athletics Hall of Fame.
“It’s a great honor to even be thought about,” he said.
But an inevitable one nonetheless.

In 22 seasons as Coastal’s head softball coach, Dannelly compiled a Big South Conference-record 669 victories along with seven conference coach of the year awards and four NCAA Regional appearances.

On the field, he was known for his signature straw hat, his unyielding competitiveness -- including more than a few run-ins with umpires -- and, the unmistakable thick southern drawl that is always ready to deliver an anecdote, memory or story.
So back to Ehrhardt ...
As he tells it, Dannelly got involved with softball when his good friend Hallman Sease started a fast-pitch team for the area around 1969 or 1970. He’d remain an active player in the sport until 1992.

“We had farmers, dairy men, construction people, all walks of life,” he said. “... But what Sease expected, when we walked into that gate ... farming was over, construction work was over. He would say, ‘Alright guys, it’s time to play softball.’ He instilled in us we didn’t play just for the hell of playing; we were there to win ballgames.”
That’s the approach he’d carry with him through his own coaching career.
Dannelly actually came upon his first coaching job when he saw the dean of USC Salkehatchie in a K-Mart outside of Columbia. Dannelly had attended the school before graudating from South Carolina, and the dean told him they were looking to start a baseball program.
Soon enough, he was installed as the athletic director and baseball coach at Salkehatchie, where he would spend the next 10 years. And even now, he still remembers waking up at 4 a.m. the day of his first game as coach and getting to the field to watch the sunrise hours in advance of the game’s 1 p.m. start.

“I was that fired up about it,” he said. “At that time I believed as long as they played good, I didn’t care if we won or lost. It took about three games for that [thinking] to go away.”
Dannelly laughed, as he did often during the conversation in his office -- such as in explaining how he came to be the Chants’ softball coach in the first place.

Indians basketball improves to 2-0 after 98-85 victory over Rockingham CC

The USC Sallkehatchie men's basketball team coming off a season opening victory against Orangeburg Calhoun Prep, faced Rockingham CC tonight in Aiken, SC.

The Indians came out for the second straight contest early, falling behind to Rockingham. The Indians trailed 47-4o with under two minutes left in the half but fought back to within two at the half, 47-45.

"We struggled early on trying to find our grove, we just weren't doing things we worked on. We have to learn to put a body on people under the boards. We have to learn to box out and get better on defense," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

In the second half, the Indians came out and played solid defense and worked hard on offense, regaining the lead at the start of the half.

The Indians went on to earn their second victory of the season and remain undefeated by a final of 98-85.

Coach Garrett said, "We came out in the second half with a renewed fire and sense of determination. We started making shots and when we put pressure on them, the game changed. I will take it, it's a win but I am never satisfied we have to get better in every outting."

USC Salkehatchie Indians men's basketball opens season with 90-72 victory~

The USC Salkehatchie Indians men's basketball team started there regular season tonight at home against Orangeburg Calhoun Prep in Walterboro, South Carolina.

The Indians came out and opened a 5-0 lead early but OC Prep fought back and with 6:12 they took their first lead of the contest 25-24.

"We have been coming out in practice sluggish in the first part of it and tonight we did the same. I knew we would play a lot of different guys as we are still looking for the chemistry that will get us through the season," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians would take a 40-36 lead into the half.

In the second half, the Indians found a grove, going on a 16-8 run to start the half.

In the end, the Indians earned their first victory of the season 90-72.

"I am pleased we earned the victory but we have a lot of work ahead of us. I tell my guys you have to continue to get better each day at practice and see improvement each game. We will hit the ground running tomorrow and get ready for this weekend's action," said head coach Travis Garrett.

If playing the #1 seed on the women's side wasn't enough, the Lady Indians had to fight the pouring rain and a temperature of 37 degrees. The Lady Indians played extremely well in the first half, forcing a 0-0 tie at the half.

Cape Fear would finally break through in the second half with 28:27 left. The would go on to score another goal late, giving them a 2-0 victory. Cape Fear moves on to the Region X women's championship on Sunday.

The USC Salkehatchie men came out with all intentions of finally breaking through against an SMC team that had beat them twice in the regular season.

The Indians defense stood tall until 28:13 left in the first half, when SMC struck first.

The Indians had several chances on goal in the first half but were unable to capitalize.

SMC would strike again before the half with 11:31 left to lead 2-0, the score would remain the same at the half.

In the second half SMC would add two more to earn a 4-0 victory and they move on to the Region X championship game on Sunday.

The USC Salkehatchie men's soccer team controlled their own destiny today against Stanly CC, win and advance to the Region X tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina or lose and the season would be over.

The Indians started the game by scoring early but it was waved off by an offsides penalty, a few minutes later they scored the games first goal and never looked back.

They would lead at the half, 1-0.

In the second half, the Indians would score two more against Stanly Community College to earn the win and secure a place at the Region X tournament.

The Indians will play again on Saturday at 6:00 pm.

Lady Indians surprise USC Lancaster to move on in Region X playoffs

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians traveled to Lancaster, South Carolina on Tuesday afternoon to take on USC Lancaster. The Lady Indians lost both regular season matches to the Lancers but would fight for 90-minutes today to send the game into overtime as the score was tied 0-0. The two teams would play two overtime periods with neither team scoring, forcing penalty kicks. The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians would make 4 penalty kicks to USC Lancaster's 2 and earn the victory. It marks the second time in as many seasons this playoff game between these two teams would go to penalty kicks, both being won by the Lady Indians.

USC Salkehacthie will now travel to Raleigh, North Carolina this Saturday for the second round of the Region X playoffs. We will have "LIVE" tweets during the match on Twitter.

USC Salkehatchie Softball gives back to the community

On Sept 24th the Salk Softball team went to Summerville, SC to be buddies for the Challenger Baseball League. We divided into two teams and each player picked a buddy to help throughout the baseball game. This was a great opportunity for the Lady Indians to give back to our sport and the children that look up to us as well as have the sport give a great lesson to Salk athletes. They learned how giving back to your community can not only put a smile on someone's face; it can also help you learn a lot about yourself and how lucky we really are to be able to give back. All of the girls had a wonderful time and so did the Challenger players. The Challenger League coaches said they have never seen their players run so fast and hit and throw so hard. More importantly they said they hadn't seen the players smile and have so much fun!

Lady Indians fall to Louisburg College, men earn draw

In what can be called a defensive match-up, the USC Salkehatchie Indians and Louisburg College were unable to produce any points yesterday in Allendale, SC.
The game would go the complete 90 minutes and also two 10 minute over-time periods without either team finding net.
The tie gives the Indians their 3rd on the season and an overall record of 7-3-3.
The two teams will meet again next weekend in Louisburg, NC.

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians were unable to find goal all afternoon on Saturday against Louisburg College at home. Louisburg would score two goals in the first half but after the Lady Indians would tighten up in the second half, they were unable to score again.

The Lady Indians fall to 4-9 on the season.

The USC Salkehatchie Indians faced South Georgia out of the NJCAA Region 17 today in Allendale, SC. The Indians Jason King would add the first and only goal for the Indians in the 41st minute of the first half.

The Indians lead at the half, 1-0.

South Georgia would respond early in the second half to knot the game up at 1-apiece and that's where it remain.

The game ended in a 1-1 draw.

South Georgia is now 7-4-1 on the season, while the Indians sit at 7-2-3.

The Indians are at home on Saturday as the will face Region X foe Louisburg College starting at 2:00 pm.

Sophomore appreciation will start at 1:45 pm prior to the start.

The USC Salkehatchie Indians defeated USC Sumter at home today by a final of 12-0. The Indians were able to score often against the Fire Ants. Coach Bill Glass had many of his players see playing time today.

The Indians win the season series 2-0, they outscored the Fire Ants 21-0.

The Indians are now 7-3-2 on the season, they will be back in action this Thursday at home against South Georgia at 4:00 pm.

The USC Salkehatchie women's soccer team went into their match with their heads held high after a 5-0 victory over Stanley CC. The Lady Indians were looking to improve their 2-8 mark.

The Lady Indians Sherrika Othello would find the back of the net with 7:08 left in the first half to give them a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

In the second half, SMC threatened often but it was the great goal play of Danielle Hulst that keep the Lady Indians in the game.

In the end, the Lady Indians left SMC with a 1-0 victory. The Lady Indians now on a 2 game winning streak, improve their record to 3-8.

The Indians remain near the top of the Region X standings with a 5-2-2 record.

The USC Salkehatchie women jumped out to an early lead on Stanly CC when Ameilia Green scored in the opening minutes, Green would go on to score 3-goals.

Sherika Othello and Devon Cocuzza added the other two goals.

The second half was shortned to 25 minutes by the Stanly CC head coach.

The Lady Indians snap a 6-game losing streak and are now 2-8 on the season.

USC Salkehatchie men's soccer improves to 5-1-1 with 4-0 win over Wake Tech

The USC Salkehatchie men improved to 5-1-1 and 4-1 in Region X today with a 4-0 victory over Wake Technical College.

The Indians started fast as they scored two minutes into the match and again seven minutes later when Elijah Ukpong found the back of the net.

Jack Jemison would add the third goal of the first half for Indians as he headed one in the back of the net.

The score at the half was USC Salkehatchie 3, Wake Technical College 0.

That score would remain until two minutes left in the match when Velmir Vejzovic got his first goal of the season.

The Indians will be back in action on Tuesday September 20th against new Region X foe, Stanley Community College.
