USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians~Lose to Wallace State 3-2~ Georgia Military 14-0 in Ringor Invitational in Aiken, South Carolina

In what appears to be a mix-up in scheduling at the Ringor Invitational in Aiken, South Carolina. The Lady Indians were matched up with the #4 team in the latest NJCAA poll, Wallace State Community College out of Hanceville, Alabama.

The Lady Lions were the Alabama Community College Conference champions in 2007 and 2005. They have made two appearances at the National Junior College Athletic Association’s Division I Softball Championship Tournament in the last three years, finishing in 7th place in 2007. Their success in national competition tops any program in the state.

Wallace State softball players also routinely earn academic honors. The Wallace State softball team has been named NJCAA All-Academic Team and players each season are selected as NJCAA Academic All-Americans and included on the college’s President’s and Dean’s lists.

The Indians played the Lady Lion extremely well today, even though they fell in the end by a final score of 3-2. The game gave USC Salkehatchie head coach much to be proud of, "We played a very good game today in every aspect of softball. I was proud of the ways the girls responded by playing such a quality team, the players, fans and parents should be proud of the girls, I know that I am. Wallace State has proven to be on of the best NJCAA programs in the nation year in and year out, to take them to a 1-run game is something that says our program is on the rise."

In the second game of the day, it seemed as though fatigue may have set in for the Lady Indians as they had played three games in two days. The Lady Indians faced Georgia Military in the second game of the day. The Lady Indians had already face Georgia Military twice in the young season, both games being played in Allendale, South Carolina. In their first match-up on the season they lost 3-1 and in game two of the double-header, they fell 2-1.

Today, Georgia Military opened up with a barrage of offense against the Lady Indians, winning by a final score of 14-0. It was a tough loss for the Lady Indians but I have to say this , to me this is the most talented USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball team in school history and they will bounce back as the season progresses.

Sunday February, 22nd 2009 VS Middle Georgia @ 10:00 a.m in Aiken, South Carolina.

On Sunday the Lady Indians face Middle Georgia at 10:00 a.m., again this won't be the first time these two teams will have faced each other. Earlier this season the Lady Indians face Middle Georgia in Allendale, South Carolina. In the first game against Middle Georgia, the Lady Indians were shell-shocked as they fell 10-3, in the second game of the double-header, they fell 5-2.

Once the results of tomorrows game with Middle Georgia become available, I will post them to the blog for all the fans and parents that can't attend the game.

LADY INDIANS SEASON RECORD 7-9 OVERALL, 2-0 IN REGION X.

Indians WIN, Indians WIN!!! 100-97 in Rockhill over Clinton Jr. College

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball team has won tonight's contest in Rockhill, South Carolina against Clinton Jr. College by a final score of 100-97.

In a much closer contest than their first match-up, the Indians none the less have pulled off a much needed Region X victory as they head into the Region X tournament in several weeks.

I don't have many details from the game other than the final score but if you go to http://www.uscsalkathletics.com/ the official USC Salkehatchie athletic website next week, you can get a complete recap of tonight's game.

The Indians now go to 13-14 on the season and 9-4 in Region X play.

USC Salkehatchie Basketball team in Rock Hill. South Carolina taking on Region X foe Clinton Jr. College

The USC Salkehatchie Indians basketball team is playing Clinton Jr. College as I type this, at this time we have no updates to report.

The Indians defeated Clinton Jr. College earlier in the season at home, 81-74.

USC Salkehatchie Softball-splits on opening day at Ringor Invitational today

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians started off the Ringor Invitational Tournament in Aiken, South Carolina with a bang today, scoring 14-runs against Patrick Henry Community College while giving up no runs. The win was historic as it marked the first time in school history that the team was over .500 at any point during a season.

In the Lady Indians second game, they were unable to prodouce any offense but they were able to hold one of the most potent offenses in the NJCAA-Georgia Perimeter to only 4-runs. Georgia Perimeter is ranked #21 in the NJCAA National Poll.

February 21 ~Truett McConell 1 Aiken, SC 10:00 am

The Lady Indians will face Truett McConell for the third time this season on Saturday. They met back on February 6th in Allendale, South Carolina for a double-header. In game one, the USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians won by a final score of 4-2 behind the pitching of sophomore Cea Knox. In game two, the Lady Indians lead throughout much of the contest but in the end the fell by a final score of 6-4.

Saturday's match-up should be one of the more exciting games for the USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians fan and one you surely don't want to miss.

Today's USC Salkehatchie Baseball-Car Wash Cancelled!!

If you were looking to have your car nice and clean today, you noticed that no one was on hand to do the job. The USC Salkehatchie baseball team fundraising car wash was cancelled due to the cold weather. In was around 25 degrees in Allendale, South Carolina at 10 am this morning and USC Salkehatchie head coach Bubba Dorman didn't want to risk getting any of his players sick, out washing cars.

The USC Salkehatchie baseball car wash will be rescheduled but at this time, it is unknown when the event will take place.

Indians baseball powers it way past Anderson University JV in game 1. Game 2 won in extra innings!!

The USC Salkehatchie Indians baseball team came out in a cold windy day in Anderson, South Carolina with bats blazing to earn a victory in game 1 by a final score of USC Salkehatchie 7, Anderson University 5. LHP Thomas Nichols who came into today's game with a 27.068 ERA, pitched strong for the Indians for 5-innings and Branfi Arias came in to earn his first save of the season.


In game two the Indians bats were again alive early in the contest when they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Anderson battled back to take the game into extra innings but in the end the Indians prevailed by a final score of 9-8.

The Indians record on the season now stands at 3-5.

I have received several phone calls this morning concerning the weather in Anderson, South Carolina and fans asking if the game is still on for this afternoon. I have posted a copy of the weather map for the weather above and we have clear skies. It looks as though the game is still a go and the first pitch should take place on schedule at 3 pm.

Another Blog entry from your Sports Information Director about USC Salkehatchie athletics

Hello sports fans; it has been some time since I last came to you with a blog entry here on the official USC Salkehatchie athletic blog. I was asked this past weekend at a Lady Indians softball game if I would let everyone know what was happening with USC Salkehatchie athletics.

First let’s start with basketball; they are heading down the home stretch towards the Region X tournament in Shallotte, North Carolina March 4-7. It has been somewhat of an up and down season for the Indians. It seems at times as though they will run away with the Region X title but then at others, it seems as they are not focused on the task at hand.
USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett has done a great job in getting his team ready to play night after night. If you don't know, at most programs they have several assistant coaches to help with the many aspects of the game but here, Coach Garrett is a one-man show and we are thankful to have such a respected coach among his peers.

I am really excited for the Indians as they prepare for the Region X tournament; we have a great mix of sophomores and freshman that work hard and want to win. If you want to see great basketball, come out to a game near you and plan on traveling to the Region X tournament next month.

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball team has been in full swing for several weeks now and for the first time in school history the have reached the .500 mark in a season. The program was started three years ago under the guidance of head coach Mitch Smith. During Coach Smiths tenure with the program, never before at any point of a season has his teams been at .500. This season the Lady Indians reached that milestone with two wins over Surry Community College over the weekend. This season should be one of the most exciting on record for the Lady Indians.

The Lady Indians have a number of talented players, Cea Knox sophomore pitcher from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was named as the top returning pitcher and position player by the NJCAA. You can read all about this in a story that I have listed below.

Stacee Whittle a freshman first baseman from Swansea, South Carolina has hit two-home-runs on the young season. I look for her to provide more power to the Lady Indians line-up throughout the season.

The USC Salkehatchie baseball team has been off to a slow start so far this season but with the amount of top-notch pitchers and talented position players on the roster, it is only a matter of time before things begin to click.

Cameron Louis a sophomore shortstop from Conway, South Carolina has been named as a top returning player for the Eastern District by the NJCAA.

This USC Salkehatchie baseball team is full of players that are headed to four-year institutions after completion of USC Salkehatchie. I tell everyone in the surrounding area, if you want to see quality baseball, you need to take a trip to Allendale, South Carolina. I think you will be totally pleased with the product they put on the field each and every game.

Coach Bubba Dorman does one the best jobs in the junior college ranks preparing his teams for today and the future. His pitching coach Jeff Wicker has proven to be one of the best pitching coaches in JUCO, with several of his former players moving on to compete at a higher level in the four-year division.

USC Salkehatchie athletics have many great projects going on around the campus; the baseball team is in the middle of their buy-a-brick program to build a new press-box behind home plate. They also have one of the nicest fields in JUCO; their playing surface is one of the nicest in the entire state.

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball program has updated their field as well, with the addition of a field house, batting cages and other facility upgrades.

The USC Salkehatchie basketball team has one of the most historic gyms in JUCO, it is a friendly confine with many additions on the way, that Coach Garett hopes to have completed by next season.

So, the next time you get the chance, take a ride around the USC Salkehatchie campus and look at all the new exciting things happening with athletics, we think you will be pleased.

If you get an extra moment, come by the sports information center and see what is done behind the scenes that keep everything going within athletics. At the sports information center, you will be greeted by Marian Easterlin, she is the lady behind the athletic fundraising activities on campus, you can even see her at all the home games, flipping hot-dogs for your enjoyment. At the sports information center, you will be able to purchase media guides and take a look at athletic teams from the past.

Don't forget to thank Mrs. Jane Brewer our athletic director here at USC Salkehatchie, she is always on the players about their grades and keeps tabs on each and every player on and off the field. It is great to watch her interact with the players, she truly cares about them and it show in her actions. I have had many bosses over my career but she has to be one of the best, it is her theme of "Family" that makes USC Salkehatchie athletics the best in Region X and the entire NJCAA system. I take my hat off to her for all the hard work she put in to make our programs one of the best.

Well, that is about everything happening with USC Salkehatchie athletics at this time. I want to thank you the fan, parent and supporter for all you do to make our athletic teams they best in the NJCAA. It is the fan that keeps these kids focused and even though you may not realize it, you can make a difference in their lives by cheering them on as they prepare for life after athletics. This is a time, when they are becoming the person they will be later in life and for you the parent and fan to be a part of it, it is something they will never forget.

Indians halt 2-game Region X skid with exciting win at home

Travis Wilkins hammers one home late in second half

The Indians lead by as much as 10-points in the first half against Guilford Tech but sloppy play let the Knights get back into the game before the half.

With 1:53 left before the half the Indians lead 42-37 but after several turnovers by the Indians the Knights trailed by two at the half, 46-44.

In the second half, the Knights held the lead throughout but with 51.8 seconds left in the game the Indians would finally get back in the game and tie the score 88-88.

It would be Bryant Julious that would give the Indians the go ahead lead with 20.3 seconds left in the game 90-88.

14.2 seconds left Guilford Technical College had one last chance to tie or take the lead, on a three point shot that just missed, the Knights hopes were dashed as the Indians held on for the win.

The final was USC Salkehatchie 90, Gilford Technical College 88.

After the game USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett said, " Once again, not the best basketball we have played this year. I am still very concerned with our level of intensity, if it doesn't get better we will be in trouble come tourney time. We have yet to play or best basketball but time is running out, they have to want to win and I am hopeful the light will come on soon and they will see it is up to them to determine their fate."

The Indians are now 12-14 on the season and 8-4 in Region X play.

USC Salkehatchie Indians baseketball team hopes to reverse 2-game skid tonight at home

The USC Salkehatchie Indians basketball team will look to end a 2-game losing streak tonight in Walterboro, South Carolina.

Tonight's game against Guilford Technical College is looming large for the Indians as they look for the top spot in the Region X tournament.

"We have to come ready to play, the one good thing is the fact we have played well at home this season. I hope we left all that sorry basketball back in the state of North Carolina over the weekend. I hope that all the fans and students will show up tonight in support of the guys, it is always great to play in front of a large crowd at home," said coach Garrett.

The Indians are 12-12 on the season and 7-3 in Region X play.

USC Soccer holds mini-camp, getting ready for 09-season

Head coach Bill Glass was busy this weekend, going through the normal soccer drills with his returning players. On a cool rainy Saturday afternoon, his players were preparing for the 09-season. The Indians will be hard at work for several more weekends throughout the month of Febuary and March.

Indians come up short in weekend series with South Georgia

The USC Salkehatchie Indians baseball team was looking to come out of it's weekend series with South Georgia with a sweep. After starting yesterday's double-header, things were looking good but in game two the Indians couldn't seem to get it's offense going and in the end they split the two games.

On Sunday freshman Griffin Spires (West Columbia, South Carolina) was on the mound for the Indians. In only his second start of his career, the Indians would only be able to muster 2-runs, as Spires would see South Georgia score 7-runs.

Spires took the loss for the Indians, he is now 0-2.

The USC Salkehatchie baseball team is 1-5 on the season.

USC Salkehatchie Indians Baseball Splits at South Georgia

The USC Salkehatchie Indians baseball team won game one of a double-header in Douglas, Georgia against South Georgia, the final score USC Salkehatchie 10, South Georgia 3.

In the 6th inning freshman catcher Bryan Parsons-Spartanburg, South Carolina- hit a grand-slam that put the Indians ahead. Mark Henderson sophomore pitcher from North Charleston threw a complete game for the Indians. He gave up 1-earned run, 4-hits and recorded 8-strikeouts.

In game two, the Indians were in the contest throughout but as they were unable to get the bats going, they lost by a final of 3-1. Ali Williams-Sumter, South Carolina went for the Indians on the mound, he threw a complete game giving up 2-earned runs, 2-walks and he recorded 6-strikeouts.

The Indians will be back in action tomorrow at South Georgia for the deciding game of the weekend series. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 pm.

Indians basketball finds road-trip to North Carolina, tough going

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball team was on top Region X when their road-trip to North Carolina started. However, after two nights the Indians find themselves in a fight to stay near the top of Region X.

The Indians fell on Friday night to Cape Fear 70-55 and after taking a short trip up the road to Brunswick Community College today, the results we almost the same.

The final score of today's match-up was Brunswick Community College 68, USC Salkehatchie 66.

USC Head coach Travis Garrett must be glad to get back to the friendly confines of his home court on Monday night, they will host Region X opponent Guilford Technical College at 7 pm.

Earlier this season, the Indians defeated Guilford Technical College in Jamestown, North Carolina.

In that contest, the Indians lead at the half, 38-37. In the second half, the Indians allowed Guilford Tech to go on a 6-0 lead and take their first lead of the game, 43-38.

It was at that point 6'8 243 lb sophomore, Larry Cox took over for the Indians with 16-points to close out the Indians victory.

The final score in the game was USC Salkehatchie 88, Guilford Technical College 78.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garett said of this upcoming match-up, "When you are able to defeat a team on their home court, they are going to come out fired up to upset you at your place. I am really uneasy going into this game having lost two this weekend. I know we are capable of beating anyone, but it really depends which Indians team shows up. I expect they will be ready and the question will be as always, will we?"

Again, Monday's game will be at USC Salkehatchie in Walterboro, South Carolina and tip-off is scheduled for 7 pm.

Lady Indians go to 2-0 in Region X play, historic day!

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians won game two by a final score of 2-1 against Surry Community College. Surry Community College is in it's first year competing in the NJCAA Region X. According to their head coach, it was decided back in the fall that they would field a team and once it was decided, most schools had already recruited all the players in their area.

It wasn't too long ago that USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith was in the same situation, three years to be exact. Today in Allendale, South Carolina his team became the first to be at .500 during any point of the season. With the win by the Lady Indians today, they are now 6-6 on the season and 2-0 in Region X play.

Coach Smith said, " I knew this team would be special, we have a great group of leaders in our sophomores and an outstanding group of freshman. With my teams in the past, it has taken them time to gel but with this group they came together from day one. If we can continue to work hard and stay focused, these team has the potential to be the most special group ever in the history of USC Salkehatchie. It is a long season and we have a ways to go but at this point, I am very pleased."

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians are 6-6 overall and 2-0 in Region X. In last years Region X tourneyment, they finished 3rd.

Up next for the Lady Indians is the Ringor Invitation in Aiken, South Carolina Febuary 20-22.

It is going to be action packed as the Lady Indians play 5-games in 3-days. I have listed the schedule below.

Lady Indians earn first Region X victory of young season

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians defeated Surry CC in game 1 today by a final score of 3-0.

The Lady Indians went into the bottom of the 5th inning scoreless until Freshman Stacee Whittle hit a 2-Run home-run. Freshman Jenna Nichols drove in the Indians other run of the contest with a two out double.

In the 3rd inning (bottom) the Lady Indians lead 1-0 and are getting ready to come to bat.

Update on weather for USC Salkehatchie Softball game VS Surry CC at Noon

According to USC Salkehatchie head softball coach Mitch Smith, the game vs Surry CC is still on for today at noon. The national weather center is showing some scattered showers over Allendale until around 1 pm and then we should see clearing sky's.
