Chemistry at USC-Salkehatchie key for Cocuzza

Devon Cocuzza wasn't necessarily looking to continue her soccer career beyond high school. But one visit from USC-Salkehatchie coach Bill Glass changed that.
Glass spotted Bluffton High School's goalkeeper in the Bobcats' first tournament of the season and convinced her to visit the junior college campus. Turns out, that was enough for Cocuzza.

"I got to practice alongside the girls there, and they were great," Cocuzza said. "They all worked together really well. And that's what I look for in a team. If you have chemistry right off the bat, that means a lot."

Cocuzza hopes to add to it next season. She signed a letter of intent Wednesday to attend the two-year program and play for the Indians in the fall.
Cocuzza said she plans to compete for the starting goalie position but may end up shifting to the midfield to better fit the team.
"I love both positions, so I don't really care where they put me," Cocuzza said."Just the fact that I get to go and play soccer anywhere is an achievement for me. I'm excited about that."

Crews to play for Indians

Dana Crews of Brantly County High School, Nahunta, GA, has signed a letter-of-intent with University of South Carolina Salkehatchie in South Carolina to continue her soccer career. The center midfielder plans to major in physical therapy or education. While in high school, Dana lettered in soccer and softball and will graduate with honors.

Soccer gives Mireles a college opportunity

When South Aiken High soccer coach Paul Waters passed out forms this fall asking his players to identify their future college plans, Jose Mireles Jr. gave a simple answer - none.

Thanks to his skills on the pitch, though, things have changed for the 5-foot-6, 123-pound senior. His abilities as a defender on last year's Class AAA state champion team drew some interest from college coaches, and on Tuesday he made his new plans official when he signed a letter of intent with USC Salkehatchie.

"It feels good," said an excited Mireles before the ink had even dried. "I never thought I was going to go to college. It's a good school, and I think I'll get along well with the team. It's a great opportunity, and I hope I can get a degree and go on to a four-year college. I have to get bigger and communicate more on the field."Waters has seen plenty of signings in his career - more than 30 over the last five years - but Tuesday's event was something special."He was really worried about going to college, and we kept pushing him to different schools," said the Thoroughbred coach. "

One (USC Salkehatchie) decided to come watch him play, and he had a great game. They decided to take him there on the spot. This is a proud moment for him and his family, and it is a big deal for our program."He's not very big, but he's very smart. He's a great defender, and we can play him at almost any defensive spot. He's a coachable kid, and his confidence keeps growing."Mireles and the T-Breds will be on the road today at North Myrtle Beach in the second round of the Class AAA playoffs, hoping to make a run at repeating as champions."We're excited," said Waters. "We're playing with some confidence, and we're injury-free. We'll just have to see where it takes us."

USC Salkehatchie to host SCISA 3-A Baseball Championship~

VS Hilton Head Christian Academy

Hilton Head Christian Academy's SCISAA Class 3-A baseball state title game against Northwood Academy will be played at 6 p.m. Thursday on the USC Salkehatchie field in Allendale.
The teams have split the first two games of the three-game series, so Thursday's game will decide the SCISAA Class 3-A state champion. Hilton Head Christian won Game 1 at Northwood 5-4 in eight innings, but Northwood bounced back to win 6-4 on Tuesday at Hilton Head Christian.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Bubba Dorman and athletic director Mrs. Jane Brewer both agreed it would be a great opportunity to showcase the USC Salkehatchie campus and baseball field.

Three USC Salkehatchie men's soccer players headed to USC Aiken

USC Salkehatchie men's soccer players Ryan Dickson, Raul and Marcio Beckman have accepted athletic scholarships to attend USC Aiken next year.

According to USC Salkehatchie head coach Bill Glass the three players will be headed to USC Aiken next year and he expects big things from the trio.

"All three are very skilled and I look to be hearing big things about them. It is great for the USC Salkehatchie soccer program when we help get players signed with 4-year universities," said coach Glass.

USC Salkehatchie basketball lands transfer for next season~

Mitchell Dixon, a 6’3 combo guard from Johnson C. Smith University, requested to be released from his scholarship to play one season at USC-Salkehatchie under the tutelage of Coach Travis Garrett.

Dixon, a redshirt freshman, played a reserve role, as a point guard and shooting guard, with the Golden Bulls, of the Central Collegiate Athletic Association. (CIAA).

Dixon played high school basketball at West Ashley High School under Coach James Dupree. A two year starter (2006-2008), he averaged 18.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists as a senior for the Wildcats. He made the All-Region and Post & Courier All Low country Teams. Dixon scored a season high 35 points versus Fort Dorchester in the 2007 Wildcat Invitational Tip Off Tournament. He also chipped in 31 points in a non conference match up in a win over North Charleston. He was also recognized on the Honorable Mention All State Team as a senior. Dixon helped lead the Wildcats to two playoff quarterfinal appearances and region runner up finishes. In the 2008 playoffs, he scored the team’s final 7 points including a steal and game winning three pointer in the closing moments in a 63-61 win over Ridge View. He averaged 10 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.2 assists as a junior.

Dixon played AAU basketball for the Charleston CAGERS and led the program to a number seven national ranking according to the United States Basketball Association. He made the Peach State Invitational All Tournament Team, an affiliate basketball showcase of Peach Jam in Augusta, Georgia, in July 2007. He also played AAU basketball for the Columbia Northeast Hurricanes.

Dixon is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Dixon Jr. of Walterboro.

Xavier Mayfield to join USC Salkehatchie teammates at Southern Poly Tech next season~

USC Salkehatchie sophomore Xavier Mayfield recently signed with Southern Poly Technical College in Marietta, Georgia.

Mayfield played in 24-games for the Indians last season, averaging 3.8 ppg.

"Xavier is a kid that works hard and wants to learn the game. If I could find 10 of him each year coaching would be easy. I look for great things out of him at the next level as he continues to grow and learn the game," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

Mayfield becomes the fourth USC Salkehatchie basketball player to sign with Southern Poly Tech this season. Deandra Blackmon, Roy Hampton and Gabe Mathis all signed earlier this month.

Dishone Gregory signed with Clark Atlanta and Region X player of the year Brandon Riley has signed to play with South Carolina State next season. Riley is the first Indian to sign with a division 1 school to play basketball.

Beteta signs with USC-Salkehatchie

Posing for signing day pictures has become almost routine for South Aiken High School boys' soccer coach Paul Waters. In the last five years, Waters has watched more than 30 players sign on with college teams, and on Friday, he was standing in support of his second this year as senior outside midfielder Rene Beteta inked his letter of intent with USC-Salkehatchie."It's really exciting," said Beteta, a 5-foot-6, 130-pounder who has been a part of the SAHS program for three years, playing with the varsity the past two. "I never expected to play college, but when this came up I took the chance and went with it."

Waters has seen plenty of players take the next step in their soccer careers, but that didn't temper his excitement for Beteta, who came a long way to gain the opportunity."He's a workaholic," said Waters. "He asks every day after practice what he can do to get better. His attitude is awesome, and he's a great teammate."It's paid off for him. At one time, he was a non-starter, and now he's been starting a lot of games for us. So his perseverance is paying off in terms of playing time."It all so paid off by giving Beteta a chance at playing college soccer, and he is excited about what he will be getting at USC Salkehatchie as part of head coach Bill Glass's junior college program."I liked the small feel," said Beteta, who explained that he fell in love with the campus after a couple visits. "I want to get situated and fit in first and then move on from there.""It's a perfect fit," agreed Waters.

"He'll have an opportunity to play, and he can start off at a small school. He loved it there, and that's what is most important. If he feels comfortable, that's where we want him to be."Before Beteta pursues a college career, and the degree in chemistry that he will seek, he first wants to help his team try to repeat as Class AAA state champions. After a 1-4 start, the Thoroughbreds are now 14-4-1, and as co-Region 5-AAA champions, they will be one of the No. 2 seeds in the Class AAA playoffs, which begin next week. South Aiken will begin play on Tuesday when it hosts No. 3 seed Crestwood. If the T-Breds can pull off a victory in that one, they will likely have to travel to No. 1 seed North Myrtle Beach in round two.

Two USC Salkehatchie Indians baseball players commit with 4-year colleges~

Sophomore's Dustin Pannell and Griffin Spires have committed with 4-year colleges to continue their playing careers next season.

Pannell is headed to Kings College in Tennessee.

Spires will stay in South Carolina as he heads to Greenville College.

USC Salkehatchie baseball player Korey Ahrens named to NJCAA all-region X team.

USC Salkehatchie sophomore baseball player Korey Ahrens was named to the 2010 NJCAA all-region second team.

Ahrens played in 46-games this year had a 146 at-bats and had a batting average of .363

Ahrens a sophomore at USC Salkehatchie is still undecided where he will play next season, he has several options.

USC Salkehatchie softball falls short in bid for Region X tournament title

The USC Salkehatchie Indians lost only one game prior to it's Sunday match-up with Spartanburg Methodist College in the Region X tournament.

The Indians knew it would once again be a long day, on Saturday the Indians had to win 2 of the 3 games if they wanted to remain in the tournament and they did.

On Sunday the Indians ran out of gas and finished 3rd in the entire Region X tournament, that started with 9 teams.

"We did great, I have never been prouder of a group of young ladies that I have coached. We came out and played our hearts out over the three day tournament. I was worried that after the long day on Saturday, it was going to be tough to win three more on Sunday. I want to thank everyone for their support and the girls for their effort," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith.

Sophomore Symone Nettles (Lamar, SC) and freshman Gwenell Crawford (Jacksonville, FL) were named to the 2009 NJCAA Region X all-tournament team for USC Salkehatchie.

I will post photo's from the Region X tournament later tonight or tomorrow, it has been a very busy weekend with traveling and tonight we have the USC Salkehatchie graduation at 7:00 pm.

USC Salkehatchie falls to loser bracket, drops game to #1 seed Pitt CC

The USC Salkehatchie Indians softball team dropped game 2 of the NJCAA Region X softball tournament earlier today against Pitt CC.

The Indians are currently underway against Southeastern CC and lead 1-0 in the bottom of the first.
