USC Salkehatchie Indians (Soccer) HOME tomorrow!!!

The USC Salkehatchie Indian soccer teams will face Middle Georgia tomorrow (August, 28th) at HOME in Allendale, South Carolina.

The men will start first at 4:00 pm, followed by the women at 6:00 pm.

We invite everyone to come out and enjoy a great afternoon of Salkehatchie soccer.

The USC Salkehatchie men are 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in Region X play.
The Indian women are 1-0 and 1-0 in Region X play.

Men fall 1-0 to Wake Tech, Women win 1-0 over Wake Tech

The USC Salkehatchie men fell 1-0 today to Wake Tech College in their season opener and Region X opener. The game was knotted up at 0-0 until late in the contest when Wake Tech took the lead.

The USC Salkehatchie women defeated Wake Tech in their season and Region X opener 1-0 when freshman Kenesha Roberts hit a goal from 15-feet out in the 85th minute of the match!

The USC Salkehatchie men fall to 0-1 on the season and 0-1 in Region X play.

The USC Salkehatchie women start the season 1-0 and 1-0 in Region X play.

They will both face Middle Georgia College on Wednesday with the men playing at 4 and the women's match following at 6:00 pm.

Exhibition match vs Columbia International scheduled for today at 5:00 pm cancelled.

Today's men's HOME exhibition soccer match vs Columbia International has been cancelled due to the threat severe weather.

2013 Mens Soccer Preview~

 

If there was ever a rebuilding year, then 2013 is it for the USC Salkehatchie men’s soccer program.  That’s because fourteen players graduated off the team in May, including nine starters.  In order to judge the quality of those Indians who will be wearing different colored uniforms this fall, you just need to look at the Indians’ won/lost record of 19-12-5 over the last two years. Another gauge would be to look at where the 2013 Salk men’s team players will be plying their trade this fall.  Most received scholarships to play soccer on NCAA D-II teams.  So only two starters are returning to the program from last year and the team will be graced with a total of only ten returners. Of course, having said all that, the fact is that there is no such thing as a rebuilding year. Teams always have to keep improving on previous results, there is no going backward.  As hall of fame NFL football coach George Allen said, “The future is now.”  So that just means that this year the returning players will need to take ownership of their sophomore season and work overtime to make 2013 a season to remember. Most immediately the sophomores will need to help the incoming freshmen to quickly adapt to the team’s tactics and style of play.

 For their part, the large freshman class will have to produce some high impact players who are not only skillful but intelligent in the way they approach the game.  There will not be a lot of time for the new guys to pick up on things because the team will play its first match just ten days after being introduced to one another. The Indians will be looking for leadership from returning goal keeper Dieusel Jeannot of North Lauderdale, Florida, as well as freshman goalkeeper Jesse Brandon Woods of Charleston who is returning to college after serving in the military. Jordan Ward, a goalkeeper from Barnwell, will give nearby soccer fans who have watched Ward play for many years a reason to root for the Indians.  Ward was a mainstay of the Barnwell High School defense over the last several years.

2013 Womens Soccer Preview~

As preseason training begins for the USC Salkehatchie women’s soccer team, there are more questions about the potential of this year’s team than answers.  This is because the team lost ten players to graduation in May and had three team members transfer.  Thus the team lost seven starters from last year’s squad.  On the plus side, the team will return eight experienced players and receive an influx of 13 freshmen.  “I guess what it will all boil down to is the strength of the recruiting class,” according to Coach Glass. “The freshmen will be expected to contribute right away. I expect to see many  new players in the starting lineup when our season begins.”

Glass always looks to build from the back, and this year is no exception.  The 2013 team will feature several returning players in the defense including Lisa Doolittle, a center back from Auburn, Georgia, Kori Hunter of Jonesboro, Georgia, who also plays in central defense, as does Sasha Crawford of Lithonia, Georgia.  Returner Jasmina Smith of Midway, Georgia, is planning to resume her starting position as left wing back, and incoming freshmen Kelah White is slated to see time as right wing back.  Freshman Kenesha Roberts of Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, is expected to anchor the defense in the role of sweeper. Roberts will have some big shoes to fill as she will be taking over the spot played by Amelia Green of Antigua, West Indies.  Green, an all-region defender two years running, will be playing at NCAA Division I South Carolina State this fall on a soccer scholarship.  “I see Kenesha following in Green’s footsteps and walking out of here with a big D-I scholarship offer in two years,” says Glass.  Of course the key to a good defense is a strong goalkeeper and this year the team will have three candidates for that role.  Danielle Danforth of Augusta, Georgia, will be returning to the team after having her 2012 campaign interrupted by injury.  Joining Danforth will be two freshmen goalkeepers, Libni Iglesias of Lexington, North Carolina, and Chelsee Wright of Upatoi, Georgia.  “I feel very good about our goalkeeping situation,” says Glass. “It is always great to have an experienced keeper returning and equally exciting to have two high quality keepers like Wright and Iglesias joining the squad.”
