155 NJCAA Baseball Players Selected in 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Major League Baseball teams again looked to the ranks of the NJCAA to fill the needs of their clubs as 155 NJCAA baseball players were selected in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player draft, which was held over the past three days (June 9-11).
This year's total falls just six short of last year's record of 161 NJCAA players that were drafted. MLB teams feasted on a variety of talented NJCAA players with 12 Division I All-Americans, seven Division II All-Americans and two Division III All-Americans taken over the 50 round event. Four 2009 NJCAA Rawlings Gold Glove winners were also drafted. Patrick Corbin (LHP) from Chipola College, Evan Chambers (OF) of Hillsborough Community College and Keon Broxton (3B) from Santa Fe College highlighted the first day as they were the only NJCAA ball players players taken in the first four rounds of the event held on June 9. Corbin was the last selection of the second round (80th overall) and sixth selection by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Chambers was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates early in the third round (84th overall) with the organization's fourth pick of the draft, while the Arizona Diamondbacks selected Broxton in the middle of the third round (95th overall) with their eighth pick of the day. Two highly touted NJCAA players highlighted the later rounds of the event.
Howard College's Runey Davis, who was the Easton NJCAA Division I Defensive Player of the Year, was selected with the 380th overall pick (12th round) by the Chicago Cubs while ABCA NJCAA Division I Player of the Year Bryson Smith of Young Harris College (Ga.) was selected by the Cleveland Indians with the 905th overall selection (30th round).
Miami-Dade College (Fla.) led all NJCAA schools with seven players drafted. Chipola College (Fla.), San Jacinto College - North (Texas) and South Mountain Community College (Ariz.) each had five players taken, while Central Arizona College, Cowley College (Kan.), Howard College (Texas) and Young Harris College (Ga.) all had four players selected.
