USC Salkehatchie softball team walks for a cure
On Oct 2, 2010 the USC Salkehatchie Softball team and coaches traveled to Gilbert, SC for the annual Dewayne's 5K Walk, Run and Roll. Dewayne Hite was healthy and robust during childhood and young adulthood. In high school he was the strongest kid on the weight team . In his late twenty's he became clumsy, unable to keep his balance and eventually became unable to perform his job. At age 30 he was diagnosed with a rare genetic disease, olivopontocerebellar atrophy, also called Ataxia. No cure is available. Funds from Dewayne's 5K will go to The National Ataxia Foundation for research to find new treatment and a cure for SCA2.IISC Salkehatchie infielder Brittany Padgett and outfielder Dannon Reese finished in the top three and medaled for their age group. Although some of our girls were not able to compete in the run we all crossed the finish line and completed the race for a great cause. This even was the first of at least three charity events that the USC Salkehatchie Softball team will compete in or host. Up next for the USC Salkehatchie Indians softball team is the Lowcountry 5K Komen race for the cure! " I am very please and humbled by the selflessness the young women on my team have shown in their willingness to participate in these events. The races were not mandatory and my team decided they wanted to partake in these charitable events during the time they have off. It makes me proud to see that they would trade in their free time to race for a cure. Hopefully in our lifetime we will be able to see a cure for the diseases we are helping to raise money for," said USC Salkehatchie head softball coach Tatjana Slawson.
