155 NJCAA Baseball Players Selected in 2009 MLB First-Year Player Draft

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Major League Baseball teams again looked to the ranks of the NJCAA to fill the needs of their clubs as 155 NJCAA baseball players were selected in the 2009 MLB First-Year Player draft, which was held over the past three days (June 9-11).

This year's total falls just six short of last year's record of 161 NJCAA players that were drafted. MLB teams feasted on a variety of talented NJCAA players with 12 Division I All-Americans, seven Division II All-Americans and two Division III All-Americans taken over the 50 round event. Four 2009 NJCAA Rawlings Gold Glove winners were also drafted. Patrick Corbin (LHP) from Chipola College, Evan Chambers (OF) of Hillsborough Community College and Keon Broxton (3B) from Santa Fe College highlighted the first day as they were the only NJCAA ball players players taken in the first four rounds of the event held on June 9. Corbin was the last selection of the second round (80th overall) and sixth selection by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

Chambers was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates early in the third round (84th overall) with the organization's fourth pick of the draft, while the Arizona Diamondbacks selected Broxton in the middle of the third round (95th overall) with their eighth pick of the day. Two highly touted NJCAA players highlighted the later rounds of the event.

Howard College's Runey Davis, who was the Easton NJCAA Division I Defensive Player of the Year, was selected with the 380th overall pick (12th round) by the Chicago Cubs while ABCA NJCAA Division I Player of the Year Bryson Smith of Young Harris College (Ga.) was selected by the Cleveland Indians with the 905th overall selection (30th round).

Miami-Dade College (Fla.) led all NJCAA schools with seven players drafted. Chipola College (Fla.), San Jacinto College - North (Texas) and South Mountain Community College (Ariz.) each had five players taken, while Central Arizona College, Cowley College (Kan.), Howard College (Texas) and Young Harris College (Ga.) all had four players selected. USC Salkehatchie Youth Summer Baseball Camp, Huge Success

The USC Salkehatchie Youth Summer Camp kicked off today with over 70-campers in attendance, the camp is set to run from today until Thursday.

Today's campers came from all over, some as far away as Walterboro, South Carolina. The camp also saw it's share of kids from Barnwell, Bamberg, Hampton, Luray and Varnville, to name a few places.

The campers enjoyed a day of learning about the fundamentals of baseball under the guidance of USC Salkehatchie head coach Bubba Dorman. The campers were also treated to instruction for former USC Salkehatchie players.

Please check back this afternoon for pictures from today's first day of camp, the photo's should be unloaded no later than 8:00 pm.

We look forward to seeing all the campers out again tomorrow for another day of learning about America's Pastime, the game of baseball.

USC Salkehatchie Youth Summer Baseball Camp Starts Tomorrow!!! June 15th

If you haven't signed your child up for the USC Salkehatchie Youth Summer Camp 2009, you still have a chance! You can show up at the USC Salkehatchie baseball field in the morning and sign your child up for the chance of a lifetime. The USC Salkehatchie Youth Summer Baseball Camp will give your child a chance to learn from a college coach, they will learn all the fundementals of baseball from hitting to throwing and much more.

USC Salkehatchie head coach has been coaching for years and according to several Major League Baseball scouts at the pro-day workout this past January at USC Salkehatchie, he is one of the premier hitting coaches in the southeast.

If your child is serious about baseball and wants to become the best, the USC Salkehatchie Youth Summer Baseball Camp will only make them better.

Current USC Salkehatchie Indian Carlos Santana set to join the Columbia Blowfish this week~

It is being rumored that current USC Salkehatchie Indian, Carlito Santana is set to join his former teammates, Oliver Santos and Branfy Arias with the Columbia Blowfish this coming week.

Santana is a rising sophomore at USC Salkehatchie, last season he played several positions for the Indians, which included shortstop and second base. Last season with the Indians, he saw action in 41-games and started 38 games. He had 127 at-bats, 27-runs, 41-hits, 31-singles, 4-doubles, 2-triples and 4-home runs, with a batting average of .323

The University of South Carolina Salkehatchie's athletic department, wishes Carlito the best of luck with the Blowfish this summer!

Another USC Salkehatchie Indian having big summer in Great Plains League

Current USC Salkehatchie baseball player, Dustin Pannell is having a big year with the Macon Giants (Georgia) in the Coastal Plains League, a wooden bat league for college players.

Panell a rising sophomore with the Indians has currently pitched 11.2 innings . He is 3-1 with a 1.542 ERA

Dustin is pitching well for the Giants and we look forward to his return to the Indians in the fall.

The Macon Giants are currently 3-1, Pannell has won all three games for the Giants, while earning thier only loss. The Giants have had two games rained out this season.

USC Salkehatchie assistant Jeff Wicker enjoying first summer as head coach of Outer Banks Daredevils

USC Salkehatchie assistant/pitching coach Jeff Wicker is making some waves with the Outer Banks Daredevils of the Coastal Plains league.

The Daredevils are part of the summer wooden bat league for college players. So far, coach Wicker has lead his team to a 10-5 record on the young season. The Daredevils are currently in first place in the North Division, the Columbia Blowfish with former USC Salkehatchie players~Oliver Santos and Branfy Arias~play in the South Division of the Coastal Plains League.

Former USC Salkehatchie Indian Branfy Arias has big day with Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plains summer league

The first part of the season must have seemed like a nightmare for former USC Salkehatchie baseball star, Branfy Arias. After hitting .143, Arias was moved to catcher by the Blowfish (his normal position is second base, even though he caught and pitched for the Indians on occasion throughout his career) and ended up with one of the best night's of his career.

On Thursday, three players homered and Justin Hopper pitched six strong innings as the Columbia Blowfish beat the Peninsula Pilots 12-5 Wednesday in the Coastal Plain League.
Hopper (2-0) allowed two runs on three hits in six innings to earn the win. He allowed three walks and struck out four.
The Blowfish put the game away early with a six-run second inning. Branfry Arias hit an RBI double to score Cameron White, then Jason Coker cleared the bases with a three-run home run over the left field wall. Later in the inning, Sean Sullivan singled home Matt Leeds, and Shawn Glover reached on a muffed throw to score Oliver Santos.

Arias hit his first homer of the season with a three-run blast in the fifth and Glover hit a two-run shot in the eighth.
Arias went 4-for-4 with four RBIs and was a triple short of the cycle.

Local high school star gets call from New York Mets

MYRTLE BEACH - This was supposed to be a relaxing weekend for Zach Godley.Fresh off winning a second consecutive Class A baseball title with Bamberg-Ehrhardt, Godley was headed to the Grand Strand for the South Carolina Baseball Coaches Association’s North-South All-Star Game. In between attending various functions and spending time on the beach with family members, he and Red Raider teammate Don Sandifer are scheduled to pitch for the South 4-A/1-A team in one of two games scheduled for 1 p.m. today and Saturday.With one text message received Thursday, Godley’s weekend plans were changed with the biggest, most shocking news of his life.

The New York Mets used the eighth to last pick in the 50th and final round of this year’s Major League Draft to select the hard-throwing right-hander.“It was a good surprise,” said Godley’s mom, Kelly, who’s also in Myrtle Beach. “Now he has a decision to make.“This doesn’t happen to real people. This happens to other people. That’s something he and his daddy have to talk about.”Scouts from the Mets, who selected the former Red Raider, Spartanburg Methodist College and University of South Carolina standout Mookie Wilson in the second round of the 1977 MLB draft, and crosstown rival New York Yankees kept a close eye on the 19-year-old Godley throughout his senior year. In just his second season on the mound at B-E, Godley finished 9-3 with a 2.24 earned run average and struck out 109 batters while walking just 22 batters.For the second straight year, Godley was the victorious pitcher in the deciding game in the Best-of-Three Class A finals.

He struck out nine batters, including the last seven retired, and allowed just three hits in the 7-1 win over Chesterfield.Despite working out for the Mets in Greenville two weeks ago and the Yankees in Bamberg last week, Godley had not heard from either team in the days leading to the draft.With the 1,514th overall pick, the Mets made Godley the first B-E player selected in the MLB draft since 2000 when Clint Collins was taken by the Cincinnati Reds. Godley and his family now have until Aug. 31 to make a decision on whether to sign with the Mets or head to SMC where he would be eligible for the MLB draft each of his two years there.

Aiken's Raiford signs to play soccer for USC-Salkehatchie

The athletic career of Aiken High School soccer standout Walenda Raiford, like the path of many budding student-athletes, deals greatly in kinetics.Raiford, with his physical presence and speed, offered glimpses of potential during his two-year tenure with the Hornets' soccer team.

Raiford's defining play as a prep player, though, came during the toughest of transitional periods - the Class AAAA playoffs and its single-elimination format.The player affectionately called "Wally" scored the lone goal in Aiken's 1-0 second-round victory over Lexington High School, a play that vaulted the Hornets into the Lower State semifinals.On Monday, Raiford made a similar life-changing ascension when he signed a letter of intent to play collegiate soccer for the USC Salkehatchie."It's a small community where I can focus on my schoolwork and play soccer," Raiford said when asked about his decision.Aiken coach Roger Carpenter remarked upon Raiford's work ethic and maturity - how the Hornet forward/midfielder fervently worked through challenges."Wally's a hard worker on the field, and he always seems to have a smile on his face," Carpenter said.

"He took adversity in stride, kept working, then got better and better. He did good things for us. He always had a knack for being in the right place at the right time."Raiford's eight goals during the season was tied for second-most on the team. Raiford's final goal - the shot against Lexington - proved to be the most important for an Aiken team that featured 12 seniors.

"I beat the goalie to the ball and chipped it over," Raiford said. "We all came together at the end of the year - we've been playing together forever. Coach Carpenter is a good coach, and he brought us a long way."

Battery Creek soccer player signs with USC-Salkehatchie

As crazy as it sounds, Amanda Diaz is now thankful for her time as a little-used reserve within the Battery Creek High School girls basketball program. After all, it was this lack of playing time that led Diaz to pick up soccer two years ago.

Now, Diaz can thank her newest sport for paving the way to a college opportunity. After two solid years of leading the Dolphins' soccer team from several positions, the senior will play soccer at USC-Salkehatchie next season.

"I never thought that I'd be good enough to get noticed," said Diaz, who expects to play defender in college, "so when (USC-Salkehatchie) coach (Bill Glass) started contacting me, I was pretty surprised, but happy at the same time."
Diaz's evolving skills from the defender, midfield and forward spots also caught the attention of fellow NJCAA schools Columbia College and Louisburg College in North Carolina. But the chance to play closer to home drew Diaz to the Indians program.

"I'm excited to have the chance to play in college," Diaz said, "and I'm really excited that I get to play against those same other schools that tried recruiting me as well."

As the team's lone senior for the 2009 campaign, Diaz tallied three goals and helped lead the Dolphins to their first playoff appearance in school history.

Oliver Santos (Santo Domingo, DR) went on with his daily duties of playing for the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plains League in Columbia, SC on Thursday night, hours after being drafted by the Cincinnati Reds. On Thursday morning, Santos was contacted by the Reds organization that he had been selected in the 34th round by the Major League club. His former coach and head coach of USC Salkehatchie said, "Oliver will do fine in the his quest to make the majors, he has a hard work ethic and good things will come his way. I hope that we can watch him on TV one day, doing what he loves, playing baseball.

If you are one of the few people in the area that hasn't seen Santos play, you can make the short drive to Columbia, South Carolina and watch him as he plays this summer for the Columbia Blowfish. We will keep everyone updated on Santos as he works out his contract and makes his decision on whether to make the leap to the pros or stay in college. Oliver signed with Tusculum University earlier this season, along with USC Salkehatchie star, Branfi Arias (2nd).

*Breaking News* Oliver Santos selected in MLB Draft by Cincinnati Reds

The University of South Carolina is proud to annouce that former USC Salkehatchie Indian, 3rd baseman Oliver Santos has been selected by the Cincinnati Reds. Santos becomes the second player from USC Salkehatchie to be drafted into the Major Leagues.

Former USC Salkehatchie Indian Joe Winkelsas was drafted by the Atlanta Braves back in 1996 and went on to pitch in the Majors for both the Atlanta Braves and Milwakee Brewers.

We will have the complete story later today and we will keep you posted if any other Indians get drafted on this the final day of the MLB draft.

The players waiting for a chance to be drafted this season are Oliver Santos (Tusculum University), Branfy Arias (Tusculum University), Travis Howard (USC Aiken), Ali Williams (Charleston Southern University) and Gary Owens (USC Aiken).

The MLB draft lasts three days, as round one kicked off on Tuesday, the draft has a total of 50 rounds, so the former USC Salkehatchie players have a great chance of being picked up by a Major League team.

We have some exciting news coming from the USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball program this afternoon or in the morning. The Lady Indians will be announcing another former player that is moving on to play for a 4-year institution next season.

If you recall, Cea Knox (Myrtle Beach, SC) signed earlier this year to play for Francis Marion next season. Francis Marion is a 4-year institution that participates in the Peach Belt conference, they are a perennial powerhouse in the Peach Belt.

Five female athletes sign with USC-Salk

Recently a fabulous foursome of Wade Hampton soccer players and a talented Red Devils softball player signed with USC-Salk.
Soccer standouts Shannon Shaffer, Lauren Pierson, Tearra Green and Myranda Smith along with softball player Nikki Kollar all signed letters of intent to continue their athletics careers with the Indians.
“We’re really excited about it,” said USC-Salk soccer coach Bill Glass. “We think it is a major step for the USC-Salk women’s soccer program … In signing these four girls from Wade Hampton, we’re getting four really good soccer players … Gaining four players from one high school is huge, especially impact players that are ready to play college soccer from day one.”

Indians softball coach Mitch Smith also expressed his happiness to sign Nikki Kollar.
“She’s a local kid,” said Smith. “She said she would work hard for us and that’s the kind of kids I want.”
Wade Hampton girls soccer coach Jack Pierson said he knew all the girls would be a real asset to the USC-Salk team. He called them a “Hampton Surprise.” He also said that other teams that thought USC-Salk would be an easy win would find out otherwise once they faced the four Wade Hampton girls, which include his daughter, Lauren.

“They know how to finish,” said coach Pierson. “We know what they can do.”
Red Devils softball coach Cassandra Bolden was also really excited for Nikki Kollar. She said her team was making history with three Lady Red Devils signing with USC-Salk. Kandyce Ranew and Amber Hiers signed earlier.

“I am thankful that God and man see fit to reward their efforts,” said Bolden “They will be dearly missed.”
Bolden also praised Smith, who watched many Wade Hampton games.
“We know he is like coach Bolden, he cares about his players,” said Bolden.
The girls are all looking forward to playing college sports.
“I am really excited to see what’s in store this season,” said Shaffer.
Smith, who is known for playing aggressive on the soccer field, said she was ready to travel and see what other teams have.
Lauren Pierson, who was out this season because of an injury, said she was excited to be playing with the other soccer girls again.
“I am just glad to be playing for a college,” said Green.
Kollar echoed Shaffer’s sentiments.

“I’m very excited,” said Kollar.

USC Salkehatchie All-Sports Camp June 29th~July 2nd

Campers are exposed to a number of different sports, including soccer, golf, tennis, relay races and many other activities during the four days of action packed camp. Campers are divided by age groups buth have the option of being put into groups with their friends. This camp is designed for everyone with the emphasis put on fun and safety. The camp director is Mitch Smith.

Campers will need to bring a comfortable pair of sneakers, water bottle, tennis racket, golf clubs if available.

All campers should bring their own lunch and drink. Lunch will be from 12:00 Noon to 12:45 PM each day.

Transportation must be provided to and from USC Salkehatchie each day.

Former USC Salkehatchie Indian, Travis Howard Officially Consensus First Team All-America Selection

SAVANNAH, Ga. – USC Aiken’s Travis Howard was named to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II All-America first team on Thursday afternoon as a designated hitter.Howard’s honor by the NCBWA leaves the Bonneau, S.C. native and USC Salkehatchie transfer as a consensus first All-America selection.

The junior was also chosen to the Daktronics All-America first team and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) first team as a designated hitter.Howard joins Chris Commons (Toledo, Ohio/Findlay) of the USC Aiken men’s basketball team as the only consensus Pacer All-America selections in the 2008-09 school year Commons was a two-time consensus All-American as he also was an All-America selection by all the major basketball publications during the 2007-08 season.Overall, Howard and Commons are two of three Pacers to earn All-America plaudits thus far in the 2008-09 season as USC Aiken softball player Jessica Strickland was named an All-American by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) in May.

The USC Aiken catcher ended her career as a three-time All-America selection.Howard is USC Aiken’s baseball’s second consecutive consensus first team All-America selection. The Daktronics National Player of the Year in 2008, Chad Jacobsen was picked first team All-America by the NCBWA, the ABCA and Daktronics in 2008 as a first baseman.The 2009 Daktronics Southeast Region Player of the Year, Howard captured one of the most prolific regular seasons on offense in 2009 not only in USC Aiken and Peach Belt Conference history, but in NCAA Division II history.

Howard, who was also named to the All-Peach Belt Conference first team as a designated hitter, ended the 2009 season with 103 RBIs to tie Jason Jones’ (Kennesaw State) PBC record of 103 originally set in 1998. He just missed out on tying the all-time NCAA Division II record of 104 set by Jarred McAlvain of Central Oklahoma in 1997.Howard’s proclivity to bring in runs in 2009 left him ending the year atop the NCAA Division II landscape in runs batted in and runs batted in per game. He is overall in the top 100 in NCAA Division II in 11 different offensive categories.Howard had an incredible 38 extra-base hits in the 2009 regular season, finishing the regular season with 19 home runs, 16 doubles and three triples. The power numbers helped Howard own a slugging percentage of .694.The only player to be named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week three times in 2009, Howard ended the year in the top 10 in the Peach Belt Conference in 10 different offensive categories, including hits, runs scored, home runs, doubles, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, total plate appearances, at-bats and sacrifice flies.Howard had 31 multiple hit games in 2009, finishing the year with 29 multiple RBI games, including four contests with five or more RBIs.

USC Aiken's 2009 baseball team ended the 2009 season tied with Central Missouri for 10th in the final Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Top 30 poll.The final ranking of 10th is the highest for the 2009 Peach Belt Conference regular season champion Pacers under reigning Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year Kenny Thomas. USC Aiken ended the 2008 season ranked 11th, while they concluded the 2005 season 12th.The ranking of 10th is also the highest in the final Collegiate Baseball poll for the Pacers since the 1993 season when the Pacers were ranked fifth in the final poll.The Pacers reached as high as No. 2 nationally in 2009 en route to their second ever Peach Belt Conference regular season championship.The regular season title was the first for the Pacers since 1994.

The Pacers also have two PBC Tournament crowns, having won the league tournament in 1992 and 1993.The Pacers' prowess during the regular season helped USC Aiken to top honors in the Southeast Region, enabling the program to host its second ever NCAA Division II Tournament regional.The Pacers advanced to the regional final for the second consecutive season before bowing out to NCAA Division II Baseball Championship semifinalist and Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Belmont Abbey in the first game of the championship round.USC Aiken (42-19) concluded its season having been a part of its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Baseball regional.

The Pacers' 42 wins in 2009 leave the program entering the 2010 campaign with five consecutive 40-win seasons.USC Aiken has been a participant in the NCAA Division II Tournament seven times (1992, 1993, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009).

Carolina Forest's star, Chris Shover signs with Salkehatchie

Chris Shover has had a long high school trip, that’s brought him from Vermont to South Carolina, from out of baseball, to back into it. Despite the rocky road, Shover realized his dream Monday, by getting the opportunity to play college ball.
Shover signed to play at USC-Salkehatchie. Shover moved to the Grand Strand from Vernon, VT after his sophomore year of high school. He moved to have an opportunity to play more competitive baseball.

But when he arrived at Carolina Forest, Shover ran into some problems. He was kicked off the team for violating team rules. Shover spent the summer proving to coach Jack Jolly that he deserved to be back on the Panthers.
The school decided to let him play his senior season, and Shover was voted the team’s top pitcher. He went 4-3 with an ERA under 3.00.
Shover says Salk was perfect for him because its small-town feel reminded him of his hometown in Vermont.

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians head softball coach announced that he has signed to area softball players from Wade Hampton high school in Hampton, South Carolina.

The Lady Indians are proud to announce the signings of Amber Hiers and Kandice Ranew both from Hampton, South Carolina.

Postseason awards keep coming for former USC Salkehatchie Indian-Travis Howard (USC Aiken)

Former USC Salkehatchie Indian baseball player, Travis Howard has keep the awards coming after a great junior season at USC Aiken, (Aiken- South Carolina) by being named to the Rawlings/ABCA first-team All-American.

Already this season, Howard was named the Daktronics Southeast Region Player and first team member. Congratulations to Travis for his accomplishments this season from the entire USC Salkhatchie athletic "Family". The USC Salkehatchie slogan runs true, "Start Here, Go Anywhere!"

Howard, who was also a first-team All-Southeast Region selection, hit .384 with 19 homers, 103 RBI and 61 runs.

The blog is back and going with news of USC Salkehatchie former and current baseball players on rosters accross the country this summer.

I know that many of you come to http://www.uscsalkindians.blogspot.com/ for news from the USC Salkehatchie athletic department and for the past week or longer, you have noticed we haven't had much to report.

The truth of the matter is, I have been under the weather resulting in a short hospital stint.

Well, I can assure you that I am back on my feet, (well, back in a half upright position) and I will be bringing you the fan all the breaking news from the USC Salkehatchie athletic department.

I want you to know that were are committed to keeping you as informed as possible and it has worried me more than you know to be away from the athletic department through all of this. I hope that you will pass along to other fans that the blog is back going and I know that you were still well informed by going to the "Official" USC Salkehatchie Athletic website at www.uscsalkathletics.com

On to the news,

the USC Salkehatchie baseball team will have several former and current players throughout the United States in several college summer leagues and on American Legion teams.

Of note: Former Indians Oliver Santos and Carilto Arias are playing for the Columbia Blowfish of the Coastal Plains League to learn more about the Blowfish, go to http://www.blowfishbaseball.com/

The Indians have a player in the Great South Summer league on the Macon Giants in Macon, Georgia, Dustin Pannell (Aiken, South Carolina). So far this season Dustin has pitched 11.2 innings . He is 3-1 w a 1.542 ERA

I have also heard that Will Lackey is playing somewhere in Missouri and that Corey Ahrens (Newberry, SC) is playing American Legion baseball, neither one of these have been confirmed by USC Salkehatchie head baseball coach Bubba Dorman.
