Former USC Salkehatchie Indian, Travis Howard now at USC Aiken was recently named to the Peach Belt All-Conference First Team. Travis, is only a few RBI'S shy of breaking the NCAA Division II single season record. He has already broken the USC Aiken single season record in his first season as a Pacer. Congratulations to you Travis from the entire USC Salkehatchie Athletic Family!!

Former USC Salkehatchie Indian-Howard Named PBC Player (USC Aiken) of the Week for Third Time in 2009

AUGUSTA, Ga. – USC Aiken’s Travis Howard was honored as the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week for the third time in the 2009 regular season it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon.Howard (Bonneau, S.C./USC Salkehatchie) also won the award in two consecutive weeks on Mar. 17 and Mar. 23. He is the only player in the PBC to earn the honor more than twice.Howard is one of three USC Aiken baseball players to earn a weekly nod from the league office in 2009 with Ken Raborn and Stephen Carmon also earning weekly plaudits from the conference.Raborn (Evans, Ga./Evans) was named the league’s first Player of the Week in 2009 on Feb. 10, while Carmon (Camden, S.C./Camden) has twice won the league’s Freshman of the Week honor.

Carmon first claimed the award on March 23 and then received the accolade once again on Apr. 27.Howard concluded one of the best single-season offensive outputs in USC Aiken history last week by hitting .500 (6-for-12). He had three extra-base hits on the week, including two home runs.Howard kicked things off last week by collecting a double and a home run against Conference Carolinas champion Belmont Abbey. He finished the week by going 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs in the Pacers’ 17-1 regular season finale win over Erskine.

Howard’s six RBIs last week led to him ending the regular season as the top RBI producer in NCAA Division II. He leads the nation presently in total RBIs and RBIs per game.Howard currently has a school-record 99 RBIs to his credit in 2009. The 99 RBIs leave him just five shy of breaking the Peach Belt Conference single season record of 103 set by Kennesaw State’s Jason Jones in 1998.

USC Salkehatchie soccer field gets a new playing surface

Indians Soccer Field Gets New Playing Surface-

The USC Salkehatchie soccer field is getting a face lift. The Indians soccer program has been around for 3 seasons but this next season the men's and women's soccer programs will have a new playing surface.

On Friday, members of the USC Salkehatchie men's and women's soccer programs, USC Salkehatchie athletic director Jane Brewer, USC Salkehatchie head soccer coach Bill Glass, the USC Salkehatchie maintenance department and many others including William Gee and Rev. Chip Reeves of the First Baptist Church in Allendale, SC pitched in to sod the USC Salkehatchie soccer field.

It took over half a day and a lot of hard work by all involved but in the end, it was worth the effort. According to USC Salkehatchie athletic director Jane Brewer, "We should start seeing grass by the end of June and by the first of August , we will start cutting it."

The USC Salkehatchie soccer field recently had irrigation installed, which should help with the growth of the new sod. If you have had the chance to see the USC Salkehatchie baseball or softball fields, which are both maintained by USC Salkehatchie head baseball coach Bubba Dorman, you know it won't be long before the playing surface is one of the best in the entire NJCAA. I hear that Coach Dorman will be maintaining the soccer field as it comes in.

The USC Salkehatchie women's program opens at home on the west campus in Allendale, South Carolina on Thursday August 18th against Brewton Parker at 5:00 pm.

The USC Salkehatchie men's program opens at home on August 19th starting at 5:00 pm.

Nicole Fluker signed a national letter of intent with the University of South Carolina at Salkehatchie Lady Indians soccer team Thursday morning.
"I'm really happy to have Nicole on the team. We've been talking for about three months or so," said Indians head coach Bill Glass, who first spotted Fluker in November during a college showcase with the Golden Isles Soccer Association.
"I thought she was a standout player there, and we started communicating," added Glass.
"I'm glad this has come to fruition because we're really excited about having her on our team."
Fluker, too, is pleased by the prospect of playing for the Lady Indians at the junior college.
"I was really excited to get a scholarship in soccer. It's always been my favorite sport," she said.
A prominent figure on both the soccer pitch and the basketball court (where she was named a 2-AAAA All-Region honorable mention), Fluker says "the momentum of the game" is what draws her to soccer.
"I love to compete, and soccer is a very competitive sport," she said.
The soon-to-graduate senior has played soccer since the age of 8 and says she is excited by the prospect of meeting her new teammates, experiencing the next level of the sport and improving her skills.
According to Glass, getting Fluker on the field will give the Indians the leeway to tweak their lineup during the upcoming season.
"I really see [Nicole] as having the flexibility to play just about anywhere because she's got tremendous speed and a good touch on the ball; she's very good at distributing the ball, she's got very good defensive skills, and she's very aggressive on defense," he said.
"I've seen her play forward quite a bit, but I've also seen her come back and really fight to get the ball, which gets my wheels turning."
During her 2009 season with the Lady Jackets, Fluker filled several roles on the team, although she spent most of her time at left wing.
"Nicole was able to be a great left-sided wing player, send crosses in, beat her opponent and be a great leader on the field for the younger girls to look up to," said coach Brad Nein.
"She was able to look ahead, see where the ball was going to be and get to that spot. And she was a tireless worker. Once she saw the ball, she went for it."
Fluker's work ethic led her to play a variety of positions over the course of the season, and whether she found herself on the wing, at center mid or even serving as a marking back, Nein says, she delivered.
"We moved her around during the season, and in each role she did a fantastic job, so I'm looking forward to seeing her play at the next level, especially in the big matchup between Salkehatchie and Middle Georgia, where she'll get to play against Jenna [Nash]," said the coach.
"That will be a lot of fun, so hopefully I'll get to be at that game.
"It's great for the program that both her and Jenna can move on and continue playing in college.
"I'm so excited for Nicole to have this opportunity at Salkehatchie. I know she is going to do a great job with her studies and on the soccer field."
The Indians are slated to start spring training Aug. 3 and will begin their preseason later that month.
"That's just around the corner as far as I'm concerned," said Glass.
"I've got a lot on my to-do list."

Cea Knox being named to ESPN The Magazine proves one thing about USC Salkehatchie

I am so proud of sophomore-Cea Knox (Myrtle Beach, SC) for being named to the second team (Pitcher) to ESPN the Magazine softball all-district All-American as presented by COSIDA. If you want to learn more about COSIDA, please look at the post below.

I think this says a lot about USC Salkehatchie and the education it provides it students. I will tell you that Cea was an exceptional student at USC Salkehatchie but the school is full of exceptional students. I say this because even though they didn't have the grades Cea had, it doesn't mean they aren't worthy of praise. We had many athletes with a 3.0 GPA and above, Cea was much higher and met all the qualifications for the award.

I want to thank all of the professors at USC Salkehatchie, it is you the professor that makes USC Salkehatchie what it has become today, one of the best places of higher learning in the state of South Carolina.

I understand that many of you work extra hard with our kids both athletes and non-athletes and it shows when they move on to their next destination and many become doctors, lawyers and successful members of society.

We should also take a moment and thank Dr. Ann Carmichael our dean at USC Salkehatchie. Dr. Carmichael has set a standard for education at USC Salkehatchie that I would put up next to any in the state.

Our athletic director Mrs. Jane Brewer has been instrumental in getting the student-athletes up to par through her work with professors and staying on top of our athletes and their grades.

I must also tip my hat to our coaches, they preach academics everyday, yes they want to win on the field but they understand that without the grades, their players will never be able to achieve their ultimate goal and that is graduation from USC Salkehatchie.

I know for a fact that USC Salkehatchie softball head coach Mitch Smith made his Lady Indians have a mandatory study hall each morning. He could have easily not cared if his players passed or not but he wants his girls to get their degrees and that says a lot about Coach Smith and all our coaches at USC Salkehatchie.

So, while Cea has been awarded this award and it is great for USC Salkehatchie and for Cea, we have many other athletes that have done great this year.

Once the final grades are in, I will post how many players of each team had at least a 3.0 and above.

Congrats Cea again and the best of luck at Francis Marion!

Also congratulations to our hard working professors, this award belongs to you too!!

USC Salkehatchie Softball Player Earns National Recognition by COSIDA-ESPN THE Magazine for her Academic accomplishments

The USC Salkehatchie athletic department is proud to announce that sophomore-Cea Knox pitcher (Myrtle Beach, SC) has become the first ever player from USC Salkehatchie to earn the honor of be named to ESPN The Magazine Softball All-american, All-district second team as selected by COSIDA as a pitcher, in the College division. Cea was selected for District 3 which includes much of the eastern United States.

The selection is very rare for a junior college player and after looking through all the selections, it looks as though Cea is the only junior college player selected this year.

CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) was founded in 1957. Previously, sports information directors, as a group, were a part of the American College Public Relations Association but most SIDs at those ACPRA meetings felt that a separate organization was needed. There were 102 members at the original meetings; since that time, CoSIDA has grown to over 2,300 members in the United States and Canada. The association is designed to help the SID at all levels. It is the desire of the members to have the profession take its rightful place on the decision-making levels of college athletics. Everything done is geared to this objective. This award is voted on by schools such as The University of South Carolina, The University of Georgia and other larger school such as these.

USC Salkehatchie has two baseball players make 2008-2009 All-Region team for Region X

The USC Salkehatchie baseball program is proud to annouce that it has two players on the 2008-2009 all-region team for Region X.

Sophomore-Oliver Santos (Santo Domingo, D.R.) has made the first team as an infielder. Santos finished the season with a .453 batting average in 161-at bats. He also lead the team in home runs with 8 on the season.

Oliver finished the regular season ranked # 21 in hitting in the entire NJCAA.

Making the second team all-region X sophomore-Branfi Arias (La Romana, D.R.) as an outfielder.

Arias hit .371 in 167 at bats on the season. Arias was ranked # 24 by the entire NJCAA in stolen bases.

Congratulations to both these young men on their fine seasons and we wish them the best as they continue their playing careers.

USC Salkehatchie Athletics now on Twitter

I am sure by now that everyone has heard of twitter. It is a service that allows people to connect with each other through updates throughout the day. I have added USC Salkehatchie athletics to twitter. I hope this service will help you the fan stay more informed.

If you go to most university or college athletic websites, you will see that they are also involved in this to keep you the fan as updated as possible. It should be slow this summer but you will be able to read the first 5-updates on the right hand side of the blog.

I will probably be twittering this summer from all our youth summer sports camps, from the office and on May 19th around 5pm when several of our USC Salkehatchie go to a pro-baseball work out day in Columbia South Carolina.

I will list the players headed to this pro day in the next several days.

Change to Blog not a huge hit with fans or myself

If you checked the blog earlier today, you noticed that it's background had changed for awhile (Shown above). I was trying to make the blog more uniformed with our main athletic website. I got several emails and phone calls saying that it was harder to read. It should be back to the old format, it was exciting to hear from those of you that check for the blog often for all your daily USC Salkehatchie athletic news.

So, for now they look of the blog should stay the same.

Now on to some more exciting news to come this summer, we will be updating the Official USC Salkehatchie athletic website with the full all-time stats for each sport. I have often been asked, what is the all-time home run records, the single season home run record, the all-time leading scorer in basketball and much more.

Now that we can all take a deep breath since all the athletics season are finished, I will work on all the exciting projects for next season in hopes of keeping you the fan more informed.

Former USC Salkehatchie baseball player-Travis Howard has blazoned a path at USC Aiken, like never before.

Howard, originally from Bonneau, South Carolina, came to USC Salkehatchie with one thing in mind and that was to get a fair chance at playing baseball and possibly moving on to a larger school once his time at USC Salkehatchie was over.

USC Salkehatchie head coach would give him that chance, "I went and saw him play twice and liked the way he swung the bat, he was a catcher, I saw that he had the arm strength I was looking for. On those two visits, I saw he was a good hitter but I knew that he could become a great hitter. He is the type of kid that can raise his game no matter what level he is playing. I told him when I recruited him the same thing I tell all the recruits, I'll give you a uniform and a chance to play. All the players that come to USC Salkehatchie have a chance to play they just have to work hard," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Bubba Dorman.

He would find that opportunity at USC Aiken in Aiken, South Carolina. The Pacers are currently ranked #4 in the nation and as they head into this weekend's Peach Belt Conference baseball championships, Howard is 4- RBI's shy of the all-time single season national record. Howard currently sits with 99-RBI's, already an all-time record for USC Aiken and with at least 1-game this weekend and then with the regionals on the way, the national record should be Howard's when all is said and done.

The entire USC Salkehatchie athletic family will be rooting for the former USC Salkehatchie Indian Travis Howard as he inches ever closer to the national NCAA Division 2 all-time single season RBI record.

I can't say enough about the 2008-2009 edition of the USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians and Head Coach Mitch Smith

The 2008-2009 USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball programs should be proud to hold their heads high when they arrive back on campus Monday.


The Lady Indians fought hard in every game this season and it was evident in many ways throughout the season.


This USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball team became the first to finish a season above .500% with a final over-all record of 23-22.


Sophomore Cea Knox (Myrtle Beach, SC) becomes the all-time wins leader for the Lady Indians, all-strike leader and she won the distinguished All-Region X award at the athletic banquet in Hartsville, SC.


Sophomore Kayla Jarrell hit her first ever home run in the Region X tournament and it wasn't just any home run, it was a game winning grand slam. Kayla was also named to the 2008-2009 Region X all-tournament team.


Sophomore Cea Knox (Myrtle Beach, SC) became the first USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians pitcher to every throw a no-hitter in school history against NCAA Benedict College (Columbia, SC) The story was featured on the national NJCAA website.


Freshman Symone Nettles (Lamar, SC) became the first Lady Indian to hit 3-home runs in one game against Aiken Technical College. She was honored by the NJCAA as the National Player of the Week for her accomplishment. We are still waiting to hear from the NJCAA to see if this is a national record for a freshman player. Symone was named to the first team all-region X team (Infield)


The Lady Indians were featured on the National NJCAA website for their work with the Red Hotts a local 8-11 year old group of girls from Lexington, South Carolina for their work for Breast Cancer Awareness.


Sophomore Michelle Turner (Sumter, SC) became the first player in school history to hit 2-grand slams against the same school. She hit a grand slam her freshman season against USC Sumter and another at home earlier this season, to give the Lady Indians a victory over the Lady Fire Ants.


I am sure many more records were broken and once Coach Mitch Smith has a moment to catch his breath, I will post them to the blog and on the official USC Salkehatchie Athletic website www.uscsalkathletics.com

I now must say a few words about USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith. I saw first hand this weekend how much he cares about his players. Once the Lady Indians were knocked out of the Region X tournament, I saw him walk up to everyone of his players on the field and thank them for working so hard throughout the season. I don't believe there was a dry eye among the players, fans or parents. I have watched him take this program to heights in the past three seasons that no one thought possible.


If you look at some of the other teams, they have more to offer but none have a coach like Mitch Smith, a coach that truly cares about his players. I wouldn't have his job for a million dollars, not because it is a bad job but it is a tough job. I think sometimes fans; parents and players just see one side of Coach Smith, the hard nosed coach that wants to win.


This weekend if you stayed after the games were over, you saw a coach that cares for his players and wants to see them not only succeed on the field and classroom but also in life.


It was a great season, I thank everyone for their support and we will go at it again next year.


If you are a parent of a sophomore, we will truly miss your child. I have come to know and appreciate each and every player on the Lady Indians squad. I hope that you will keep us updated on your child's progress as they move on from USC Salkehatchie.


If it isn't on the playing field, I would love to hear from the players that move on and get their degree from another institution and I hope you encourage them to stay in touch with us by keeping their mailing address up to date for athletic mail outs.

Spartanburg Methodist College wins 2008-2009 Region X softball tournament in Hartsville,SC

Spartanburg Methodist College 2008-09 Region X Softball Champion

The Lady Indians first game in the 2008-2009 Region X tournament came against Pitt Community and if the Lady Indians hadn't committed several errors early on, it could have been them in the Region X championship this afternoon against Spartanburg Methodist College.


In a year in which almost every team in Region X was pretty evenly matched, the Lady Pioneers ran the table to become the Region X champions.


Pitt CC with one loss in the Region X tournament headed into Sunday's games, defeated Surry Community College in their first game today and then turned around and defeated Florence Darlington Technical College.


Pitt Community College would then have to face Spartanburg Methodist College in a must win situation.


The Region X tournament is a double-elimination tournament and for Pitt Community to win it all, they would have had to play 4-games and win them all today. In order to become the Region X champion, they would have needed two wins against Spartanburg Methodist College.


The next stop for the Spartanburg Methodist Lady Pioneers is St. George, Utah for the NJCAA Division 1 championship.


I will keep everyone updated on their progress in the NJCAA tournament which begins March 14th.

Sophomore-Kayla Jarrell (Varnville, SC) named to Region X All-Tournament Team

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indian chosen for the 2008-2009 Region X all-tournament team was sophomore-Kayla Jarrell (Varnville, SC).

Kayla hit a grand-slam against Stanly CC to propel the Lady Indians to victory, she also made several remarkable plays in the infield throughout the tournament.

Region X will be mailing her an award in the next week or so.

Congrats to Kayla Jarrell for making the Region X all-tournament team this season from the USC Salkehatchie athletic department!

Lady Indians fall to Surry Community College but not without fight

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians have been knocked out of the 2008-2009 Region X tournament in Hartsville, South Carolina. The Lady Indians fought hard against Surry Community College but two errors which resulted in two unearned runs, cost the Lady Indians much like they did on Friday in game 1 against Pitt Community College.

The Lady Indians went with Cea Knox on the mound for the third time in the tournament and she pitched a great game but again errors were the Lady Indians downfall.

The Lady Indians finish the regular season with an overall record of 23-22, the best record in USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball history. The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball program has only been around for three years. I have to take my hat off to this great group of young ladies as they were one of the best group, I have ever seen at USC Salkehatchie.

I am not taking anything away from past teams but this team came together and worked as a unit, from day one.

Coach Smith said after the game, "It hurts when you lose out but I am also filled with pride because our girls fought hard in all 3-games today. It is tough to play 3-games in one day and win them all. If we would have won out today, it would have been a 4-game journey to win the Region X championship on Sunday and that is tough. I will miss these girls as I am with them all the time and we are a family. I love each and everyone of them as if they were my own child. I want to say to the sophomores thank you for playing your hearts out, I'll never forget the effort you gave me for two years."

Coach Smith will now hit the recruiting trail over the summer and get ready for next season. Coach Smith has already signed several players for next season. I will try and post more stats from this weekend's tournament on Monday. I will post the Region X tournament Champion tomorrow afternoon after the games are completed.

Lady Indians under weather delay in game 3 on Saturday

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians are trailing Surry Community College in the bottom of the 6th inning from Hartsville, South Carolina.

A bad thunderstorm has blown in and you have to wait 30-minutes in between lightning strikes to resume play. The Lady Indians are at the plate with 1-out once we resume action.

I will continue the coveritlive.com "LIVE" blog once we start back. If the Lady Indians fail to come back, their tournament run will have ended.

However, as I explained to them it is not over until the fat lady sings and we have 4 more at-bats to get back into this contest.

Lady Indians win Game 3 against Stanly by a final score of 6-5

The Lady Indians have won 2-games today, the first against Southeastern 13-0 and they just defeated Surry CC by a final score of 6-5.

Surry mounted a late come-back but the Lady Indians were able to hold on for their second victory on the afternoon.

Sophomore-Kayla Jarrell (Varnville, SC) was the lady of the hour when she stroked a grand-slam to give the Lady Indians a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the 4th inning.

The Lady Indians will play again at 4:45 this afternoon.

They will play the loser of the Florence Darlington Tech-Surry CC game being played at 2:30 pm on field 4.

Lady Indians take lead headed to top of 5th

After trailing 2-0 for 3 innings, the Lady Indians have taken a 6-2 lead heading into the top of the 5th.

Kayla Jarrell (Varnville,SC) hit a grand-slam to give the Lady Indians a 6-2 lead.

As we start the top 4th, the Lady Indians trail 2-1 as the scored 1-run in the bottom of 3rd.

Lady Indians win game 2 against Southeastern-Game 3 ready to start at 12:15

The Lady Indians have won game 2 against Southeastern Community College. The Lady Indians are getting ready as I type this to take on Stanly CC. I will NOT be broadcasting this game but I will broadcast game 4 at 4:15 if we win this one.

I will update this game through the blog, throughout the game.
