Former Indian Gary Owens signs with Florence Freedom

Gary Owens joined the Freedom in June of 2013 and is seeing his first action in the Frontier League.  Owens spent the 2012 season with the Roswell Invaders of the Pecos League, another independent league.  He appeared in 32 games for the Invaders, hitting .268 with one home run an 16 RBI.  The Greenville, Sc. native played collegiality at USC Salkehatchie before going to Southern Polytechnic State University in Marietta, Ga.

Adrian Rivero, former pitcher at USC Salk, now pitching for USC Aiken, pitches for Winchester Royals in Winchester, VA for the summer.

Colleton County High School Soccer Player Jenny Beebe

Colleton County’s Jenny Beebe is joined by Danny Wiggins, CCHS head girls soccer coach Lauren Townsend, USC Salkehatchie head coach Bill Glass, her mother, Janet and CCHS athletic director Lorraine Browning Thursday as she signs to play college soccer for the Indians.


Moments after signing to play collegiate soccer for the Indians Thursday in the Colleton County High School Media Center, Jenny Beebe walked up to USC Salkehatchie head soccer coach Bill Glass and gave him a hug. That embrace was Beebe’s way of thanking Glass one more time for the opportunity to continue playing the sports she’s cherished since she was a little girl.“I’ve loved soccer ever since I was seven years old,” Beebe explained when asked what the opportunity play college soccer meant to her. “I’ve been playing for 11 years, so this really means a lot to me.”Beebe, who says she’s played every position on the field in her career except goalie, primarily saw time playing forward and midfielder for CCHS in 2013, helping to lead the team to its most successful season ever with a 10-7 record and the program’s first playoff appearance. Lauren Townsend, Colleton County’s head coach, says Beebe will be a strong addition for the Indians because of her willingness and ability to contribute anywhere on the field the way she has throughout her career. “Jenny is going to be a great asset to USC Salkehatchie,” Townsend said. “She can play any position you ask her to play whenever you need her to do so. Being a versatile player like that is extremely important. She would be a huge bonus to any team.”Beebe’s versatility has Glass reserving judgment on which position he’ll ask her to play until he sees her in practices and workouts over the summer and into the fall. In the meantime, Glass says, he just excited about the quality of player he feels he’s getting with Beebe. “Jenny is an advanced soccer player with good skills, good soccer intelligence and good soccer athleticism,” Glass said. “Also, if you watch her on the field, you can see the passion she has for the game of soccer. She’s totally committed every second that she’s out on the field, and that’s the kind of player we look for.” Beebe, who plans to pursue a veterinary technician’s certification after her two years at Salkehatchie, says she’s looking forward to being part of her new team.“I think this is going to be a good opportunity to play with new people from different places,” Beebe said. “I like to work with people, so hopefully I can be a good teammate and help them be successful.”

FORMER USC SALKEHATCHIE BASEBALL STANDOUTS

Branfy Arias and Carlos Santana pose together under the Tusculum arch. Both played baseball and received Associate degrees here at USC Salk before moving on to Tusculum. Branfy graduated from Tusculum this past December and Carlos this spring. Branfy was an assistant coach at Tusculum this past year. Both guys came to Salk from the Dominican Republic.

As the school year winds down, many current and former county athletes have decided on where they will continue their athletic careers.Brandon Farmer, a former two-sport standout at Vanguard High, recently signed in basketball with St. Augustine’s (N.C.) University after spending one season at South Carolina-Salkehatchie.
“Going up there worked out a lot better than I thought it would,” said Farmer, who averaged 3.3 points and 2.3 assists in helping his program qualify for the NJCAA National Tournament. “I’m excited about (moving on). (St. Augustine’s) is in a great city (Raleigh) and I am excited about the opportunity.”
Farmer, who played point guard in his first year in junior college, will now have three seasons to play for St. Augustine’s, which is a NCAA Division II school and plays in the CIAA.

“I pass the ball much better now and I am better at getting my team more involved,” said Farmer, a four-year starter in high school for the VHS basketball program. “I’ve definitely improved my basketball I.Q.”

Miller signs with Indians

LAKE CITY, SC - Lake City High School softball player, Nijla Miller, signed a National Letter of Intent Thursday to play softball at USC-Salkehatchie.
A four-year varsity starter, Miller batted .412 this season with 16 RBIs and six stolen bases. She was named to the 2012 All Region Team for Division 7-2A and was the team’s Defensive MVP in 2012. She was also named to the school’s All-Academic Team.
“During her four years at Lake City High School, Najla has been a model student-athlete,” said Panthers head coach Erin Poston. “She has improved every year on the softball diamond and tremendous growth potential at USC-Salkehatchie. With her combination of speed and power, we expect great things from her in the next few years. Naj has been a rock for our program and will be truly missed,” Poston added.

Indians fall in game two of Region X Baseball Tournament to USC Lancaster, eliminated from play

 

The Indians fell to USC Lancaster on Sunday by a final of 12-2. Starting Indian pitcher Wayne Parker threw a no-hitter into the 5th and had 6-strikeouts. In the 5th, the Indians defense committed 3-errors and would go on to commit 7-errors in the game. The Indians were eliminated from Region X Tournament play. It was a great season and we are proud of our young men and head coach Bubba Dorman and assistant D.J. Lawson. I am already excited about next season with so many returning players.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Bubba Dorman was named the Region X Coach of The Year by his peers before tonight's game between SMC and USC Lancaster. We here at USC Salkehatchie congratulates Coach Dorman on a great season and we are proud of him and all his hard work!!

Tomorrow's game vs loser of USC Lancaster to be broadcast on Ustream

 

We will be broadcasting the USC Salkehatchie vs USC Lancaster game tomorrow at 1:00 pm via Ustream. The camera is set in a stationary position but I will provide play by play and will keep you in the game. We decided at the last minute to provide this service to our fans that weren't able to make the trip. I know many parents wanted to make the journey but couldn't, this gives you a chance to watch your child play.
