Sophomore Brandon Riley is one of the most humble young man you will ever meet. When he won the 2009-2010 Region X Player of The Year, he said it was an honor but one that belonged to the entire team. He was named to the NJCAA All-American team last month to go along with his Region X honor.
According to USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett , Brandon would work on his game often by himself, trying to ensure he could continue playing the game he loved after graduating from USC Salkehatchie.
All of his hard work payed off this past week when he was awarded an athletic scholarship by South Carolina State University. He has long since played his last game at the USC Salkehatchie gym in Walterboro, South Carolina but his accomplishments will live on for years to come.
On Thursday afternoon, USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett announced that the USC Salkehatchie athletic program had hung a banner in the gym to acknowledge Brandon's accomplishment of becoming the first Region X player of the year in school history.
"Brandon is one of those guys a coach dreams of coaching. He is a hard worker and wants to learn the game. In all my years, I have had maybe one or two Riley's and as a coach it doesn't happen often. The banner was an idea between myself and our athletic director Mrs. Jane Brewer. We knew that larger schools hang a banner when a player wins such an award and we said why not here. I want to thank Mrs. Brewer for making this happen, it is a well deserved honor for Brandon," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.
The banner will hang for all time in the USC Salkehatchie gym in Walterboro, South Carolina. The entire USC Salkehatchie athletic family wishes Brandon the best of luck as he enters the second phase of his collegiate basketball career at South Carolina State in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
