USC Salkehatchie weekly soccer season update-

USC SALKEHATCHIE MEN’S WEEKLY SOCCER SEASON UPDATE BY COACH GLASS

The 2010 NJCAA soccer season is in full swing and the USC Salkehatchie Indians men’s team has several matches under it’s belt at this point. The team’s record is currently 3-7 overall and 2-3 in Region X.

The Indians got under way on August 28 when they visited Middle Georgia College and dropped a 1-0 decision. The team played well against Middle Georgia and was therefore shocked the next day when the Indians were unable to stop Darton College from running up a 6-0 score line against them. “Darton is a powerhouse in the NJCAA this year,” according to Coach Glass, “they exposed some weaknesses in our defensive tactics which we are working to correct.” The team came back and beat Region X opponent USC Sumter on the road by a score of 4-0 on September 2nd. Papy Fall, Admir Vakufac, Javiar Pace, and Ahmo Ibrahimovic had goals in that game, with Nash Brace picking up two assists. Marvin Miller and Jamie Heasman split the game in goal and were jointly credited with a clean sheet. On September 4 the Indians were back home against Region X power Spartanburg Methodist and lost a close one 2-1. “We benefited early on when one of their players was sent off but even with a man advantage we were unable to possess the ball, kept turning it over and eventually lost the match,” said Glass. David Williams scored the Indians lone goal in the contest on a penalty kick. The team then hit the road for Barnesville, GA where they beat Meridian Community College 5-3 on September 10 then lost to Gordon College 3-0 on September 11.

Papy Fall (2), David Williams, Ahmo Ibrahimovic, and Kenneth Vargas scored goals against Meridian and Ibrahimovic, Williams (2), were credited with assists. Marvin Miller put in 90 minutes minding the net for Salk. “We matched up very well with Meridian,” said Glass, “they play a similar style to ours, but like other teams we have faced this year, Gordon plays a very direct game and we have been having problems with that style of play all year.” On September 14 the Indians hosted Cape Fear and lost a close one 2-1 when the visitors scored late in the second overtime. “This was a very disappointing loss,” according to Glass, “but the whole team understands what we might have done better and if that lesson sticks then at least we will be taking some important learning out of the defeat.” The Indians goal against Cape Fear was scored by Admir Vakufac off a scramble in the penalty area.

On September 18 the Indians faced Wake Tech at home and got hammered 5-1, Mac Bustard scored the Indians goal off an assist from David Williams. Jamie Heasman played goalkeeper. The Indians then traveled l to Douglas, GA to play South Georgia College on September 20th where they absorbed a 5-0 loss. After two rough outings in a row the team bounced back to earn their second region win of the 2010 campaign against Tri County Tech by a score of 3-0. David Williams converted early off a feed from Papy Fall then in the second half David Williams found net again on a well placed penalty kick. The final Indians tally of the game came when Nash Brace crossed the ball in for Ahmo Ibrihimovic to finish off. Jamie Heaseman played in goal for the Indians and got credit for the shut out. Heasman blocked a penalty kick in the second half which would have made the score 2-1, this seemed to take the wind out of the visitors sails as they never seriously threatened after that. The Indians will be on the road September 25 to face Region X opponent Cape Fear at 3 pm then they will travel to Spartanburg Methodist on September 29 for another Region X contest starting at 3 pm.

USC SALKEHATCHIE WOMEN’S WEEKLY SOCCER SEASON UPDATE BY COACH GLASS

The USC Salkehatchie women’s soccer team got off to a rocky start for the 2010 season but recently things are looking up for the squad. “We faced a tough line-up of opponents early in the season,” said Head Soccer Coach Bill Glass, “and we were further hampered by injuries to several key players during the early going.” Currently the team has a 3-6-1 record.

The Indians started off on August 28 with a 3-0 loss at Middle Georgia College followed by a 4-0 loss at home to South Georgia College on August 31. On September 2 the ladies fell to USC Sumter by a score of 1-0 then on Sept 4 they lost to Spartanburg Methodist 2-0. On September 7 the undermanned squad got hammered by Cape Fear by a score of 5-0 but came back on September 10 to play a close match versus Meridian Community College before giving up a goal late to fall 1-0. On September 11 the ladies rallied to beat Gordon College 1-0 in a hard fought match when Ashur-Eden Amai hit a 30 yard shot into the top right hand corner of the Gordon goal. Goalkeeper Zaf Papanikitas was credited with the clean sheet in the victory. The Indians proved that win was not a fluke when they bested USC Lancaster 2-0 at home on September 14. Ashur-Eden Amai and Jess Marchant got the goals in that game with Jessica McMains getting both assists. Goalkeeper Danielle van Hulst recorded the shut out. “I have been very impressed with the tenacity and perseverance of this team during a difficult stretch of losses,” said Glass, “the ladies have supported each other and kept a positive attitude throughout and it is great to see them rewarded with a pair of wins.”

USC Salkehatchie Assistant Soccer Coach Alex Glass has worked extensively with the team on technical training and tactics. “If we can get a couple players back who have been out with injuries and keep developing the players we can continue to add more wins to the record.” according to Coach Alex.

On September 18 the Indians hosted Oxford College and earned a hard fought 2-2 tie with Jessica Vido and Jessica McMains both scoring for the Indians. Danielle van Hulst manned the net for the Indians. On September 20th the women hosted Tri County Tech and beat them 3-0. Jessica Vido scored once and Tearra Greene got two goals in the match. Danielle van Hulst played the entire game in the net. Ashur-Eden Amai assisted on Tearra Green’s second goal.

The Indians will be on the road September 25 to face Region X opponent Cape Fear at 1 pm then they will travel to Spartanburg Methodist on September 29 for another Region X contest starting at 1 pm.
