Indians fall in close one at home against Brunswick CC 79-77

The Indians were coming off several huge wins to start Region X play against Denmark Technical College earlier in the week and Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett knew that today's contest against Brunswick CC would be a war, "I told the guys prior to the game that we always have close games against Brunswick CC and today would be no different. Brunswick head coach Walter Shaw and I are great friends and we like to beat each other and we coach hard and hopefully it carries on to the kids."

The Indians fell behind earlier as Brunswick CC jumped out to a 12-5 lead but fought back and lead at the half, 42-35.

In the second half, it was a back and forth game with no team getting more than four points ahead. The Dolphins would take their biggest lead of the half with twenty seconds to go, six points.
The Indians had one last chance with the score 77-78 and 4.2 seconds left, the Indians in-bounds pass would be stolen by Brunswick with 1.2 seconds and the Dolphins would hit one of two free-throws to close out the game.

"We have to start making free-throws and playing smarter. We are soft right now under the basket and must learn to box-out and get rebounds. We are a really good team but we have to start playing more as a unit and someone has to step-up and become the leader," said Garrett.

The final was Brunswick CC 79, USC Salkehatchie 77.
The Indians are now 14-8 on the season and 2-1 in Region X play. Brunswick CC improves to 4-1 in Region X.

The Indians will be back in action on Tuesday night against Clinton Jr. College in Rock Hill, SC at 7:30 pm.

Indians remain undefeated at home with 80-71 victory over SMC

The USC Salkehatchie Indians knew that today's game vs Spartanburg Methodist College would be a battle and the game lived up to it's hype. The Pioneers came out early and took it to the Indians going up by as many of 13 in the opening minutes.

The Indians would fight back and take a 39-32 lead into the locker room.

"We knew they would come out and throw everything out at us early. I told my guys today would be like a heavy weight fight, we would have to take the blows early and fight back," said USC Salkehatchie Travis Garrett.

In the second half, the Indians extended their to 21-points leading 66-45 with 5:59 left. The Pioneers true to form were not done and fought back to within 76-67 with 31.7 seconds left.

In the end, the Indians would hold on for a 80-71 victory.

"We just have to learn to hold on to the lead, we had Denmark Tech by 20 something and almost let it slip away and we did the same thing again today. I just hope the guys are learning that you can't take any lead for granted, you have to play hard the entire game. The way we played today at times was great but we were flat other times. We will need to come out tomorrow and play flawless to beat Brunswick," said Garrett.

The Indians are now 14-7 on the season and 2-0 in Region X play. The Indians are at HOME tomorrow against Brunswick CC at 3:00 pm. Brunswick is 3-1 in Region X play.

Indians getting ready for weekend Region X games, Saturday and Sunday

The USC Salkehatchie Indians basketball team is getting set for two HOME games this weekend against Region X foes, Spartanburg Methodist College and Brunswick Community College.

The Indians will start the home stand on Saturday against Spartanburg Methodist College at 3:00 pm. The Indians fell in the Region X championship game to the Pioneers the past two seasons.

"Of course this is a big game for our program, the Pioneers are the top team in our region and we know to be the best, we have to beat the best. I tip my hat to them because they play solid basketball and have been at the top for some time. I hope Saturday we will come out and play focused," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians will again be home on Sunday against Brunswick Community College at 3:00 pm. Brunswick lost to SMC by two points in overtime earlier this year.

"Brunswick is another very well coached team and they will be ready to play. We have always battled them hard and they play us hard. I wouldn't expect anything less than a war on Sunday. We have to understand that teams want to beat us as much as we want to beat them. Our guys are prepared and I hope everyone will come out this weekend and watch some great basketball teams," said Garrett.

Again, the Indians face SMC on Saturday at 3:00 pm at the gym in Walterboro and will play Brunswick CC on Sunday at 3:00 pm.

The Indians are 13-7 on the season and 1-0 in Region X play.

There is no place like home~ USC Salkehatchie 91, Middle Georgia 67

The Indians started the season 10-2 and things seemed to be rolling right along, that is until the last five games, "We just hit a point on the extended road trip where the guys got tired and weary. I knew it was a long time to be on the road when the schedule came out but I also knew in the long run it would make us stronger," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians 10-7 on the season would face Middle Georgia State at home and from the opening tip-off things would go the Indians way. The Indians lead throughout the first half, taking a 52-31 lead in the locker room.

"We came out and executed tonight, I told the guys in the locker room prior to the game that this is our house and we have to set the tempo at home. I was pleased with the play of Denzel Collins tonight he was a leader on the court and the other guys followed," said Garrett.

In the second half it was again smooth sailing for the Indians offense as they would add another 39 points. Coach Garrett would be able to get many reserve players playing time, "It is always good for any program to get their young players on the court. We have some talent on the bench and I hope the fans got a glimpse of the future tonight," said Garrett.

When the final buzzer went off, the Indians would get the victory with a 91-76 final score over Middle Georgia. Tonight marks the last time these two schools will meet as Middle Georgia State will go to the NAIA next season.

The Indians are now 11-7 on the season and will be back in action at home on Friday against SC Sports Academy at 7:00 pm.
