After fast start, Indians offense comes to a halt against Brevard CC

The USC Salkehatchie Indians men's basketball team jumped out to a fast start against Brevard CC in the Tallahassee CC Holiday Inn Thanksgiving Classic on Thanksgiving day. The Indians went on a 18-4 run to start the game but Brevard CC. finished first half on 15-0 run and 34-9 overall.

Brevard CC lead at the half, 38, 27.
USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett said of the first half, "We started fast and it looked as though we could control the game. However, Brevard CC was able to get back in the game because of turnovers, something we have to work on."

In the second half, the woes would continue for the Indians, Brevard CC would put 49 on the board in the half. The Indians would respond with 45 of their own but it was too little too late.

The final score was Brevard CC 87, USC Salkehatchie 72.

"We have committed over 200 plus turnovers this season. If you look at the points teams are getting off turnovers, that is the difference. We can't expect to have 20 plus turnovers per game and expect to win. We have to have one player on this team take the leadership role and make it his team, so far that hasn't happened. To win games, you have to want to win and right now, I don't feel we want to win. I can assure fans that this week we are going to shake things up and try a new lineup, I am going to find five players that want to play."

The Indians are now 1-9 on the young season, Brevard CC improves to 4-4.

Happy Thanksgiving to All from the USC Salkehatchie Athletic Department~

This year as we celebrate Thanksgiving, we here at USC Salkehatchie have so much to be thankful for. We are so thankful for the many student-athletes here at USC Salkehatchie, I have said it many times before but we have some of the best student-athletes in the entire NJCAA. To me a great student-athlete is not always someone who exemplifies excellence on the playing field but a student-athlete that is well rounded both on the playing field and off is just as important if not more so to an athletic team. I would put our student athletes up against any in the country and that is a direct reflection on you the parents. So, this year as we here at USC Salkehatchie get ready to celebrate Thanksgiving with our families, know that your child is a part of that family and for that, we give thanks!

USC Salkehatchie falls to #2 team in all of NJCAA, Tallahassee Community College 74-56

The USC Salkehatchie Indians faced the #2 team in the NJCAA tonight at the TCC Thanksgiving Classic.
Tallahassee Community College came out strong, leading at the half 41-24 at the half.
The Indians were never able to regain control and TCC cruised the remainder of the game, winning by a final score of 74-56.
"We have to continue to improve, we are close but then we take ten steps backwards. If we continue to turn the ball over, we will get beat, plain and simple. You can't commit 21-turnovers and have them get 24-points off them and be successful. We will work hard and get better, that is the bottom line," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.
The Indians now drop to 1-8 on the season, while TCC improves to 9-2
The Indians will face Brevard CC on Thanksgiving day at 4:00 pm. Once the score becomes available, I will add here on the blog.

Indians fall 80-81 in another close one against East Georgia College

The USC Salkehatchie Indians traveled to East Georgia College tonight, looking to avenge an 85-84 loss at home last week. Last week's game went down to the wire, with the Indians having a chance to earn the win with 2.6 seconds left in regulation.
Today's game had to seem like a bad dream to USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett. The Indians lead by 10 points early on and seemed to have a comanding lead. East Georgia College would storm back right before the half and lead 41-39 at intermission.
"We played a great first half, we showed emotion tonight. I have been asking the players to play with passion all season and tonight, they did," said Garrett.
In the second half, the game went back and forth with each team earning the lead several times.
Finally with 6.1 seconds left, sophomore Darnell Jackson took the Indians final shot, only to have it come up short.
Coach Garrett said, "I was impressed with the guys tonight, this game is the first all season in which we didn't give up. We fought back and played with intensity and that is all I can ask from the squad. I know brighter days are ahead, tonight showed that."
East Georgia would go on to get the win by a final score of 81-80.
The Indians were 11-21 from the line.

Indians lose heartbreaker against East Georgia College

The USC Salkehatchie Indians lost a heart breaker tonight at home in Walterboro, South Carolina against East Georgia College 85-84.

The Indians lead by as many 9 points in the first half before East Georgia pulled within 4 at the half, 43-39.

East Georgia came out after the half and turned it on, taking the lead 44-43 with 19:15 left in the game.

The Indians would come back with 17.8 seconds left when Chris Rhodes hit a 3-pointer to tie the game, 84-84.

Donnie James then inadvertently fouled an East Georgia player.

He hit the front end of two but missed the second one, giving the Indians one last chance.

With 2.4 seconds USC head coach Travis Garrett called time to set up, Chris Rhodes for another shot but was unable to connect.

"We have to stop turning the ball over, I don't know exactly how many we had in the game but it was around 30. When you give the other team that many opportunities nothing but bad things will happen. We also missed 19-free throws, that can't happen. I think we have made strides but then we back right back up," said head coach Travis Garrett.

The final was East Georgia 85, USC Salkehatchie 84.

The Indians fall to 0-4 and East Georgia is now 3-0.

The Indians will be back in action at the SGT Classic in Americus, Georgia at 5:30 pm.
