Question- How do I get a USC Salkehatchie schedule? Answer below-

The University of South Carolina athletics are in high gear with baseball, softball already underway with their fall schedule. USC Salkehatchie soccer is nearing the end of it's season and looking forward to their Region X tournament. USC Salkehatchie basketball gets underway next week and Coach Garrett is looking forward to great things from his players.

I was asked today, "How can we get schedules of the games?" Well, there is several ways to get the schedule for the team or teams you support. On www.uscsalkathletics.com you can download a schedule by clicking on the link for each team located on the left hand side of the website. The sports information office located on the Allendale campus also has pocket size schedules of each team, once their respective sport starts. We also publish a media guide for each sport and inside the media guide you will be able to find a schedule.

If you are looking for the home schedule only, you can view the banner we have located on Highway 301 in Allendale, it has both the men's and women's home soccer schedule. Once baseball and softball come into season, we will have a banner located in the same location giving their home schedules.

In the next few weeks we will have a banner located in front of the Walterboro campus, it will have the entire home schedule for the basketball team.

And lastly if all of the above fails, you can contact us here in the sports information department at 1-800-922-5500 and we will be glad to assist you in any way possible.

I hope to see everyone out at a game this season!

Go Indians!

Past week's soccer recaps...

The USC Salkehatchie women’s soccer team beat USC Lancaster 6-1 on Saturday after watching the Salkehatchie men’s soccer team take Wake Technical Community College into overtime before falling 2-1.

In the women’s match for USC Salkehatchie, Elisa Routt of Warner Robins Georgia led the scoring with two goals, Desiree Wickham of East Marathon New York, Emily Thompson of Lexington, Yahimar Lai of Beaufort and Lindsay Jones of Hampton each had one goal in the victory. During the match, Maggie Moore of Gadsden and Emily Thompson shared the goaltending responsibilities.

In the USC Salkehatchie men's game, Ryan Wallace of McDonough, GA scored the lone goal for the Indians on a penalty kick to equalize the score and force overtime. Richarde Anderson of Warrenville played goalie for USC Salkehatchie the entire game.

On September 13 both teams were mauled by Louisburg College, the men going down 8-0 and the women getting hammered 9-0.

The men came back and played well against Middle Georgia College in Cochran on September 18 losing by a score of 4-1. Ryan Dickson of Portadown, Northern Ireland gave the Indians their only goal against Middle Georgia on a penalty kick.

On Monday the women’s team played host to South Georgia College which was stacked with women’s soccer players from the island of Trinidad & Tobago. The visitors won by a score of 8-0. It was a great match for the lady Indians to play against so many talented players, most of the USC Salkehatchie women soccer players are freshman.

Lady Indians WIN! Men fall short in Shoot-out..

The Lady Indians tasted victory for the first time this season and first year head coach Bill Glass got his first victory at USC Salkehatchie. The lady Indians defeated USC Lancaster, I do not have the final score but I wanted to let everyone know that we won.

The men fell to Wake Tech after the game was tied in regulation, Wake Tech won in a shoot-out with the Indians.

I will have the complete game recap in the next few days.

Congratulations to the Lady Indians and to Coach Bill Glass on the victory. I know that the Indians have somewhat struggled this season but Coach Glass works so hard to get his players ready each week.

Late week thoughts

It has been an exciting week around USC Salkehatchie, with the softball and baseball teams in full swing and soccer still steaming full speed ahead. I would have to say that never in the history of USC Salkehatchie has athletics been such an integral part of the school's growth. It is amazing to see the other students interact with athletes and the whole student body feel a part of the university through athletics. As with any school academics come first at USC Salkehatchie but sports have a way of bringing people together.

Of course the larger universities have always felt this way with their football programs but your small institutions have struggled for years with no athletic teams for alumni to keep ties to their former school. I want you to take a moment and think about The University of South Carolina or Clemson University without football programs, basketball programs or baseball programs. I am sure both schools would still thrive with the higher academic standards both have but would the alumni support they both enjoy still be there? I am excited about the USC Salkehatchie booster program, our program is a way for both former athletes and former alumni to give back to a school that helped them on their way to success.

Since my arrival at USC Salkehatchie, so many people have come up to me to share their experience while at the institution. I can see in their eyes the excitement they have for USC Salkehatchie, many telling me that if there had not been a USC Salkehatchie, they wouldn't have succeeded as they have. I hope that you will come back and visit us for a game over the next few months. We are getting ready to tip-off the basketball season soon and baseball and softball will soon follow in January.

I want to thank you for your continued support of USC Salkehatchie athletics and if you get a moment, go to http://www.uscsalkathletics.com/ and check out our booster club at USC Salkehatchie.

Live test blog huge success!

In a blog a few days ago, I announced that USC Salkehatchie would be launching a new "Live" blog to give parents and fans a chance to interact during games and other special events. On Wednesday at 2 o'clk we hosted a test blog and it was a huge success. I was worried that I hadn't given fans time enough to learn about the test blog and I must admit that I didn't think many fans would join us the first time. I will have to admit that I was wrong, I was surprised by the number of people that participated in our first run. I started the "Live" blog right on time and within minutes we had over 29-people join us.

I would like to thank the following for their participation, Bigg, Sports Fan, California Family Member, Softball Mom, Baseball Dad, Indian Fan, Lumberton NC, USC Salk Parent and Indian Nation. On the "Live" blog the parents and fans were able to communicate with me and express their opinions and views on USC Salkehatchie athletics and all were very positive. One of the members that joined the "Live" blog was Mike Jackson from Union, South Carolina. " I was very impressed with the "Live" blog that your university had yesterday. I had daughters that went to large 4-year universities and played soccer and they never had anything like this. I would have loved to have been able to come on a site while they were playing and follow the game live," said Jackson.

I have spoken to our athletic director and over the next few months, we will be working to make the "Live" blog a reality from the games on campus. The "Live" blog will hopefully give parents that have to work during the week, a chance to follow their child online from work or home. In the "Live" blog, we are also able to play audio from pre-recorded interviews with both players and coaches and we hope to play them during the "Live" blogs. In the "Live" blogs we will also be able to upload photo's from the game and you the parent or fan will be able to see your child and the USC Salkehatchie teams in action. I hope that everyone will pass the word around about the USC Salkehatchie "Official" blog and about our "Official" athletic website http://www.uscsalkathletics.com/

If you would like to see yesterday's first "Live" blog, you can go to the link below and look at the replay.
http://www.coveritlive.com/index.php?option=com_altcaster&task=siteviewaltcast&altcast_code=8e1263bf25&height=550&width=470

After looking at all our options, the first live blog may take place during a basketball game sometime in November. I hope that you as a parent or fan of the Indians will check back often and Go Indians!

Live Blog coming to The "Official" blog of USC-Salkehatchie Athletics

I am in hopes of starting a live blog on The Official USC Salkehatchie blog. First let me explain, a live blog is where fans, parents and others are afforded the opportunity to interact with me the blogger. If we are able to accomplish this task, we could be able to blog live from games here on campus. It is still in it's infantile stages and is something that will come in the future. I was so excited about it's possibility that I wanted to go ahead and let you the fan know that it could be coming soon.

If you click on the link below, you will notice that we are going to have a live blog test on Wednesday at 2 pm. I hope that you will join me for this test and together let's make USC Salkehatchie athletics "The best they can be".

Soccer teams lose over the weekend against Louisburg

The USC Salkehatchie mens and womens soccer teams fell over the weekend to Region X foe Louisburg. The mens team played first, losing by a final score of 9-0. The womens team took the field around 3:00 pm and fell by the same final score 9-0. In the heat and humidyt the teams both played well, even though the final score didn't reflect their efforts.

The mens soccer team is back in action on 9-18-08 (Thursday) for a match-up with Middle Georgia in Cochran, Georgia.
The womens soccer team will see action again on Saturday 9-20-08 at home against Region X rival, USC Lancaster. The scheduled start-time is 3 pm.

USC Salkehatchie Baseball hosts Pro-Day

The USC Salkehatchie baseball players tried to put their best foot forward this past week, in hopes of impressing the professional baseball scouts on hand.

Over 15 MLB scouts came out in hopes of finding the next diamond in the rough. USC Salkehatchie players took batting practice for the scouts and then it was the USC Salkehatchie pitchers turn to shine.

I was very impressed with our players as they seemed to all shine at the right time. It was great to see our guys from such a small university excel when it mattered most. I know that both Coach Dorman and Coach Wicker were impressed with the way they handled themselves.

Indians drop pair of Region X match-ups

The USC Salkehatchie Indians soccer program continued with Region X action on Wednesday as the men’s and women’s teams traveled to Wilmington where they dropped
two matches to Cape Fear Community College.

The women lost 7-2 and the men came out on the wrong end of a 4-1 score line. “Both teams played well,” according to Head Salkehatchie Soccer Coach, Bill Glass, “the women got behind early but then played steadily and pretty much evenly with Cape Fear for most of the match, then the men came on and played 90 minutes of equally aggressive soccer.”

In the women’s match freshmen Emily Thompson of Lexington took a corner kick for the Indians in the 5th minute and Elisa Routt of Warner Robins, GA finished it off to give Salk the early lead. The team let down a little after that and allowed a quick succession of through balls leading to four strikes by their hosts.

With the score at 4-1, Desiree Wickham of East Marathon, NY tallied on a free kick from about 35 yards but the Indians were not able to get another goal after that. On the men’s side it was a hard fought contest all the way. Salvadore Torres of Barnwell electrified the team when he scored off an assist by Ethan McKenzie of Stockbridge, GA to halve the Indians deficit and make the score 2-1 but injuries forced some juggling of the line up and put some Indians into unaccustomed positions and that led to a couple more goals for Cape Fear to put the game on ice.

“The Indians teams were both happy with the way they played and with the cool rainy weather we found up there which was just perfect for soccer,” according to Glass, “but there was something missing and it took us all a while to figure it out – there were no gnats!.”

The Indians return to action on Saturday when they host perennial Region X power Louisburg with the men starting things off at 1 pm, followed by the ladies at 3 pm.

Late week thoughts

I was talking with someone the other day about the coaches at USC Salkehatchie and this person asked me , " Why would a coach want to be at USC Salkehatchie?" I thought about this and without hesitation I said, "Because he has a love for the sport he coaches and for the players he coaches!"

I know that sounds like the perfect response for a sports information director but I truly meant it. I've had the chance to sit down with every coach at USC Salkehatchie and learn things about them personally outside of work.

I have learned about their life experiences before they arrived at USC Salkehatchie and each and every one of them have interesting stories. I have learned that many of them coach at USC Salkehatchie because they love the small school atmosphere. I found out that one of our coaches enjoys being able to learn every players name, something he would have been unable to do at a larger institution.

I told my friend that just because a coach comes to a smaller university, it doesn't make him any less of a coach. In fact it makes him special, our coaches have to deal with their kids everyday, they have to learn everything about them and they have to be more than coaches, they become the kids family away from home.

I watch the coaches as they interact with their players on a daily basis and it astounds me how much they actually care about their players. I have heard coaches ask players, have you had something to eat today, are you studying hard, have you spoke to your family lately? I have gained more respect for EVERY coach we have at USC Salkehatchie than I had even for my own coaches in my playing days and that is saying a lot.

I know that I have several parents read this blog and I want to thank you for your nice emails. It is scary for students when they first journey away from home and it is often scarier for their parents. I wanted to let you the parents know that your child is cared about here at USC Salkehatchie. I wrote in a post recently that I had often heard USC Salkehatchie is a "family", I can attest to it now because I am now part of the "family".

It was an exciting time today on the east campus of USC Salkehatchie, all the buzz was for The University of South Carolina, President Dr. Harris Pastides and his wife Patricia Moore-Pastides.

The president and his wife arrived on campus around 11:30 am today and their first order of business was to meet the new students for 2008-2009. After meeting all the students, president Pastides visited our bookstore on campus and purchased a USC Salkehatchie baseball shirt.

He and his wife then traveled over to the education building conference room where they enjoyed lunch with local civic leaders and members of the USC family. President Pastides spoke after lunch to those in attendance, ," USC Salkehatchie is a vital part of the USC system. When I speak of The University of South Carolina, it encompasses all of the schools within our system," said President Pastides.

They then left for the library building where they enjoyed an afternoon reception. USC Salkehatchie is proud to have the backing of our new president and his wife. It was a great day to be a part of the University of South Carolina "Family".

USC Salkehatchie drops pair over the weekend.

Below is a recap of the matches played by the USC Salkehatchie men's soccer team this past weekend. It was written by our head coach Bill Glass. It seems bleak for fans right now but things are really looking bright. You have to realize that we are going through some minor growing pains but we will get better as the season progresses. The entire team is mostly comprised of fresman and once the get a year under their belt and we get a new class of incoming freshman, great strides will be made.

The Salkehatchie Men’s Soccer Team worked over Labor Day weekend and gained valuable experience while losing to Darton College 6-0 on Saturday and then losing again to South Georgia College on Sunday by a score of 5-0. “Anytime you go into Region XVII you can expect a tough match,” according to Salkehatchie Head Soccer Coach Bill Glass, “Darton and South Georgia College are both very representative of the high level of soccer played in Region XVII.”

The Indians played hard in both matches and gave their opponents cause for concern. Against Darton they trailed by only three goals at the half and the Darton Coach could be heard during the halftime break admonishing his team because they were not piling on the goals they way he had expected them to. Against the South Georgia Tigers, a penalty kick was awarded to SGC in the fourth minute of the match and that was all the difference between the teams at halftime as the score was 1-0 at the midway point. In the second half of the SGC match, Glass rested several starters who had been in throughout the previous days’ action and in all during the first half of Sundays game.

The Tigers took advantage by scoring several times against the Indians reserves. “It was good that everyone got plenty of playing time and had the opportunity to experience the intense physical nature of intercollegiate soccer,” according to Glass. The Indians men’s and women’s team will be at home this weekend against Region X powerhouse Spartanburg Methodist.

The men’s team plays at 1 PM on Saturday and the women’s team takes the field at 3 PM. Both matches will be on the Indians home soccer field located on the Allendale campus.
