USC Salkehatchie mens soccer team come up short in scrimmage against Newberry College~

The Salkehatchie Indians men’s soccer team lost a scrimmage to Newberry by a score of 6-1 on Saturday. The lone goal by
the Indians came on a direct free kick taken by Ryan Dickson of Portadown, Northern Ireland in the 27th minute.
After a dummy run by Chris Roulston of Queensland, Australia Dickson calmly lofted the ball just over the Newberry wall
with enough topspin to curve it just inside the Newberry far post from 30 yards out.

The scrimmage was divided into three 30 minute segments and Coach Sam Opoku of Newberry used the first two segments to try out some new players and combinations of new players and returning players. The Indians did very well in the first two segments but were no match for the Newberry starters who came on with fresh legs for the final 30 and proceeded to take the Indians to school. “By the time Newberry got their starters out there we had lost several Salkehatchie starters to minor injuries and fatigue,” said Indians Head Coach Bill Glass, “they were then able to use their height advantage to good effect against a patchwork back line.” Nevertheless Glass saw reasons for optimism. “The guys played hard for 90 minutes and were still getting after it right up to the final buzzer despite a discouraging score line,” according to Glass, “the guys did a lot of good things out there and overall I am pleased with the effort.”

The Indians sophomore players were glad to see Brad Cochran (former USC Salkehatchie Indian) who is now a member of the Newberry soccer team.

USC Salkehatchie Men's Basketball program lands BIG 2009 recruiting class.

By BRANTLEY STRICKLAND
sportsdesk@lowcountry.com
USC Salkehatchie head basketball coach Travis Garrett promised to make a big splash in filling out his 2009 recruiting class. Turns out, he was referring to about 6-foot-10-inches and 300 pounds worth of splash to be exact.
Yep, the newest Indians is a load, as former Mid-Carolina High School star Marcus Goode has transferred from Division I Marshall to USC Salkehatchie.
“He going to be a dominant player for us,” Garrett said of Goode when reached Sunday. “His skill level is up there, he’s very highly athletic, and he just knows how to play. “He is going to be a major impact on our program.”

Goode, who appeared in 11 games and averaged 4.2 points per appearance for the Thundering Herd last season, averaged 22 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks in his senior prep season. He will be a redshirt sophomore for the Indians, leaving him one year of eligibility to play for the junior college program.
“He just gives us a dominant big man, a real polished big man, something I haven’t had since I’ve been here,” Garrett said.
Garrett said he liked the idea of pairing Goode with 6-9 Mari Konate, a recruit from France who is also expected on campus in August.
“It’s pretty good,” he said. “We’re really going to be able to play the way I like. We’ve got some real aggressive guys can compete and come in and contribute. I’m just really pleased with how things worked out.”

The acquisition also likely wraps up Salk’s class at seven players.
“We’re shutting it down,” Garrett said. “We do have room for one more, but we’re not really looking at this point. Maybe if a best available type guy or a transfer comes our way, but I’m satisfied with where we’re at.”

USC Salkehatchie men's and women's soccer practice underway~

The USC Salkehatchie men and womens soccer practices have gotten underway today. The Indians have had a wonderful day here in Allendale, South Carolina for practicing with the tempature right around 93 degrees for the high. The Indians will continue to practice until the first exhibition match which takes place on August 18 against Brewton-Parker College at 5 pm in Mount Vernon, GA. The first home match will be against Cape Fear Community College on September 1 at 4 pm.

Coach Glass spoke about the first few practices;

Our men’s and women’s teams began practice at 7 am Monday with a fitness test.

The level of fitness on the men’s team was excellent and I am could see that the men recruits
and the returning players all worked hard on their fitness programs over the summer.

Several of the women’s team players were also quite fit but a few looked like they maybe should
have worked a little harder this summer.

We also had our first training sessions yesterday focusing in on ball work and offensive tactics and I was very
happy with the high level of intensity, on-field communication and the enthusiasm on both the men’s and women’s teams.
This is what coaches refer as the training personality of the teams and I can tell at this point
that both squads have excellent training personalities. I can tell that I am going to enjoy working with
these players throughout the season.

USC Salkehatchie Women’s Soccer 2009 Season Preview

Expectations are running high for the 2009 Salkehatchie Indians women’s soccer team. Second year Head Soccer Coach Bill Glass has been out on the recruiting trail ever since the end of last season. Glass feels that all the work on recruiting will pay off this fall. “I expect that the women’s soccer program will take a significant step forward this year,” said Glass.

The 2009 team will feature several international players, some out-of-state American talent and a strong contingent of South Carolinians.

Goal keeping duties will be handled by sophomore Maggie Moore of Gadsden, South Carolina and freshman Zaph Papanikitas who hails from West Richmond in Adelaide, Australia.

Key defensive players will include freshman Amanda Diaz of Beaufort, freshman Nicole Fluker of Waycross, GA, freshman Desiree Rosario of Hortense, GA, freshman Myranda Smith of Hampton and sophomore Elisa Routt of Warner Robins, GA. Routt was the Indians MVP in 2008. “One thing our defenders have in common is that they can all play multiple positions and be effective,” according to Glass, “for example Routt, Fluker and Diaz can all play up top, Smith is a strong defensive midfielder and Rosario is an accomplished goalkeeper.”

In the midfield the team will be able to call on a quartet of freshmen consisting of Nicole Evans of Walterboro, Shannon Shaeffer of Hampton, Dehkontee Sayon of Monrovia, Liberia and Amanda Floresca of Walterboro. Two sophomore midfielders Lindsay Jones of Hampton, SC and Lauren Pierson of Hampton, SC will bring experience to the center of the formation. “I am excited about the potential for a lot of attacking firepower coming out of the midfield,” according to Glass.

The team will also be able to call on several out-and-out strikers to get the ball into the opponents net including freshman Tearra Green of Hampton SC, Ashur Amai who comes from Dalby Australia, Soledad Bucaram of Guayaquil, Ecuador, sophomore Victoria Ballard of Allendale and sophomore Mary Aldrich who is also from Allendale.

Glass feels that the home grown players will form the backbone of the team. “Our South Carolina girls know each other and many have been playing here in the low country either on the same team or against each other for years,” said Glass, “this shared experience will be a big advantage for us starting out.” The team will also benefit from the players who are coming over from nearby Georgia. “The Georgia players always come in with tremendous energy and enthusiasm,” according to Glass, “they exemplify the competitive spirit.” Glass is also pleased that the Salk soccer program will be hosting several internationals. “I am not looking for the internationals to come in here and be superstars just because they are from overseas, we are just looking for the international students to come in and contribute their best to the team just like any of our South Carolina or Georgia players.” Of course the American players are excited about having the opportunity to get to know students from foreign lands and play soccer with them.

Training camp for the Indians opens up August 3 and the first exhibition match takes place on August 18 against Brewton-Parker College at 5 pm in Mount Vernon, GA. The first home match will be against Cape Fear Community College on September 1 at 4 pm. The team’s schedule is posted on the USC Salkehatchie athletics website. It is always a good idea for Salk supporters to check the schedule on the website (
www.uscsalkathletics.com) for last minute changes before heading out to a match.

USC Salkehatchie 2009 Men’s Soccer Preview

The USC Salkehatchie Indians men’s soccer team will feature a talented group of returning players who will be joined by an outstanding recruiting class to form the 2009 squad. “I am really happy with the way the team has shaped up for the fall,” according to Salkehatchie Head Soccer Coach Bill Glass.

The returning players are striker O’Neal Simpson who scored 5 goals for the Indians in 2008, defender LaQuinn Nimmons of Bamberg, forward Salvadore Torres of Barnwell, last year’s starting goalkeeper Richarde Anderson of Warrenville, 2008 Indians MVP Raul Melara-Beckman of West Columbia, his twin brother Marcio Melara-Beckman, midfielder Marcus Richardson of Columbia, midfielder Donald Condry of Gibsonton FL and midfielder Ryan Dickson of Portadown, Northern Ireland. Dickson won the 2008 Coaches Award and was named to the All Region X Second Team.

Two Brazilians will be joining the team, midfielder Itamar Filho of Fortaleza, Ceara and striker Marcelo Gerhardt who is from Novo Hamburgo in the state of Rio Grande do Sol. An exciting group of players will come from Florida including midfielder John Luka Joseph who is a native of Haiti but now lives in Oakland Park, Florida. Defenders Emir Begic and Adnan Osmanovic now live in Jacksonville, FL but are originally from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Forward Ahmo Ibrahimovic of Jacksonville also came from Bosnia originally. Goalkeeper Brian Sheffield and defender Gregory Egan are from Jacksonville as well, they played on the same club team with Begic, Osmanovic and Ibrahimov. Joining the Indians from neighboring Georgia will be Spencer Lauderdale a defender from McDonough and twins Ian and Jordan Foster of Pembroke. Lauderdale and the Fosters were standouts on their high school teams and played travel ball for Georgia Youth Soccer Association club teams.

As usual most of the Indians recruits will come from South Carolina. This year the team is happy to welcome goalkeeper Donald Stocker from Charleston, striker Walenda Raiford from Aiken, defender Myles James from Columbia, forward Josh May of Beaufort and forward Britton Gough from Rock Hill. Three players who grew up playing soccer here in the immediate area will also join the squad; Quame’ Dunbar who gained fame minding the nets for Barnwell High School over the last several years, striker Ken Padgett who helped with coaching at BHS and Cam Mixon a strong defender who was a standout player at Wade Hampton High School.

With such a large group of new players coming in Glass believes that the challenge will be getting everyone on the same page. “The players will have to learn to play together and that means everyone adopting the same tactics offensively and defensively,” said Glass, “that will be the key and that is what we will be working on in the preseason.”

Training camp for the team will fire up August 3, with the first preseason exhibition coming against USC Aiken, in Aiken at 5pm on August 19. The team’s first home stand will be against the Faulkner University JV on August 29 at 4pm. The 2009 Indians soccer schedule can be viewed on the USC Salkehatchie athletics website. It is always a good idea for Indians supporters to check the website (
www.uscsalkathletics.com) for any last minute changes before heading out to a match.
