Indians season ends in semi-final vs Cape Fear 87-78

The Indians were well prepared to take on Cape Fear CC tonight in the Region X tournament semi-finals, having beat them in their last meeting in Walterboro.
The Indians came out early and the game plan seemed to be working once again as they took an early 16-point advantage in the first half.
Sophomore Denzel Collins would get two early fouls and coach Garrett took him out the game.
"We had a sizable lead and with him having two fouls, I figured we could hold the lead or at least keep them at bay until the second half," said Garrett.
The Indians were unable to hold the lead and Cape Fear came roaring back, cutting the Indians lead to only four 36-32 with 2:26 remaining in the first half.
The score at the half was USC Salkehatchie 38, Cape Fear CC 37.
Coach Garrett said," I still felt as though we would be good down the stretch in the second half. I knew our guys had been in several battles this year and would adjust and come out and play hard."

In the second half, it was like a heavy weight fight early with both teams throwing blows but unable to knock out the other. It would be Cape Fear that would throw the hardest punch with 2:17 left in the game, jumping out to a 6-point lead, their largest of the game.
Cape Fear CC would hold on to defeat the Indians 84-75.
Cape Fear CC advances to face Brunswick CC on Saturday at 2:00 pm in the Region X men's basketball championship.
"We had a great season, I know the guys are all disappointed with the loss tonight but we will rise again. I told them we win as a team and lose as a team, it hurts now but tomorrow will be better. I take my hat off to Cape Fear CC, they wanted it and they never gave up. I wish my sophomores the best of luck in the future and to the freshman, I told them let's work hard in the off-season. I want to thank our athletic director Jane Brewer for all of her support, she always stands with us and we appreciate that. The fans were great this season and I hope to see everyone out supporting us again next season," said Garrett.
The Indians finish the season with a record of 19-12

Indians struggle with Clinton Jr. College, head to semi-finals on Friday against Cape Fear CC.

The Indians had swept the two previous match-ups against Clinton Jr. College, so most figured that today's game would be a tune-up for Friday's semi-final, that is everyone except USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

"I knew that Clinton would come out swinging, they finished last in the Region and they had nothing to lose. I tried to tell our guys that once tournament time comes, you can throw out all records," said Garrett.

USC Salkehatchie came out in the first half and jumped out to an early 8-0 lead and looked to be cruising but Clinton Jr. College would come roaring back and lead for much of the half.

"We were sluggish, I just was surprised how we played in the first half. I know that we are a good team and could be a great team but we have yet to show it," said Garrett.

Clinton Jr. College would lead the Indians 36-33 at the half.

In the second half, the Indians would finally square things up with 15:00 left at 41 a piece.

The Indians would take the lead with 14:33 left but it would not last long. It looked as though the Indians were in trouble late as Clinton Jr. College held a 6-point lead.

Then with 57.7 seconds remaining the Indians would take the lead for good at 70-69, they would go on to defeat Clinton Jr. College 75-69.

Coach Garrett said after the game,"That was a tough game, we made it tougher than it should have been, we missed almost 20- free throws. I explained to our guys that we have to play a complete game from here on out or the season will end against Cape Fear CC. Cape Fear is a very good team, they are well coached and they will be ready."

The Indians advance to the semi-finals for the third year in a row, they will face Cape Fear CC with the tip-off scheduled for 7:00 pm.

We will have "LIVE" updates on Facebook and Twitter throughout the game.
