Congratulation to Darnell Jackson from the USC Salkehatchie Athletic Department~

Indians fall for second straight day at Collegiate Sports Shootout~

The USC Salkehatchie Indians men's basketball team had hoped for better results when they left for Florida earlier in the week. USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett explained, "We had high expectations going into the shootout, I knew it was going to be a tough road but I thought we could pull one game out."

The Indians lead against the #8 team in the NJCAA on Wednesday night before finally falling 80-70 to Chipola College.

On Thursday afternoon, the Indians would let turnovers and a terrible day from the free-throw line do them in. The Indians committed 22-turnovers against Pensacola Jr. College and was only 14-24 from the free-throw line.

"We committed too many turnovers today, I thought we could overcome the ones in the first half but as the game progressed, we just dug a hole we couldn't climb out. It will get better and I can't wait to get into Region X play and see how things go from there," said coach Travis Garrett.

Leading the Indians on Thursday night was Darnell Jackson with 13-points and 8-rebounds.

Nate Drayton 11-points, 6-rebounds and Javaris Jacob had 10-points and 9-rebounds.

The Indians are now 5-10 on the season with the two losses this week, they will be back in action January 6th at HOME at 7:00 pm against Middle Georgia.

USC Salkehatchie defeats Waycross College in final game of Holiday Classic 75-57

The USC Salkehatchie Indians defeated Waycross College in the final game of the Holiday Classic. The Indians came out in the first half with intensity and it showed on the court with the Indians outscoring Waycross 38-8 in the final 10-minutes of the first half.

"We came out and played our game early and set the tone. It was a great effort on defense and that opened up oppurtunties on offense," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians would lead at the half, 47-22.

In the second half, things were pretty much the same as the Indians cruised to a

win over Waycross College. The Indians lead by 20 or more points the entire second half.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett was pleased with his team's overall proformance," We came out and dominated from the opening whistle and I am pleased with the way we got back on transition defense. I know we are capable of playing like this every game if we will execute like we did today. I am a little concerned with the way we came out the second half, we were flat but we picked up the tempo as it went on."

Waycross head coach Cory Baldwin said after the loss, "It was a tough game and they did a good job. We were out rebounded and they scored a little more than they should have."

Details from tonight's Holiday Classic at USC Salkehatchie in which Waycross College (GA) defeated Rise Academy (PA) by a final of 90-89

The first game of the USC Salkehatchie Holiday Classic became an instant classic before the final buzzer went off to end the game. Rise Academy from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania came out ready to play and stunned Waycross College early in the contest. The game was back and forth throughout the first half with Waycross Academy(GA) leading Rise Academy (PA) 42-41 at the break.

In the second half the game remained close as the game was tied 76-76 with 4:02 left in the game. With 1:50 left, Rise Academy took an 83-82 lead but Waycross fought back to pull ahead by 1 with 20 seconds left in the contest.

It was Rise Academy that went ahead once again 89-88 and it looked as though they would get the win. However, Waycross would get the go ahead basket as time expired when sophomore Brandon Hosely drove the lane for the winning points.

Rise Academy head coach Vin Sparacio was less than impressed with the officials, " I don't like to blame officials but tonight seemed unreal. The last call they missed was horrible as it was an obvious walk. I thought that we had time left on the clock when their shot was made but I guess not. I know you have to take the bad with the good but we don't play to lose."

A jubilant Waycross College head coach Cory Baldwin said of the victory, " Tonight's game was totally not our style of play. We lead the nation in the NJCAA with the less amount of points allowed a game, before tonight we had only given up 63 in a game. Brandon Hosely came up huge for us in the second half. I think he had 4-points in the first half and 25 in the second. It was obvious that the guys knew he was hot and keep feeding him the ball."

Leading Rise Academy (PA) tonight was #25 Kyland Clarke 11-points, #55 Pablo Bertone 16-points and #5 Johnathan McNair 5-points.

For Waycross College it was #21 Brandon Hosely leading the way with 29-points followed by #1 Marcus Benitez 23-points and #12 Reco Lewis with 11-points.

USC Salkehatchie will face Waycross College tomorrow at 3:00 pm in game 3 of the Holiday Classic. As of 10:00 pm, it was unknown if Rise Academy (PA) would have a team to play at 1:00 pm. As soon as the information becomes available, I will post to the blog.

Former USC Salk Indian~Travis Howard (USC Aiken) Named to Preseason All-America First Team by NCBWA

(Story by USC Aiken)

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - USC Aiken's Travis Howard was named to the 2010 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Division II Preseason All-America first team as a designated hitter.

Howard was a consensus first team All-America selection last season as a junior after being chosen to the Daktronics All-America first team and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) first team as a designated hitter. He was also tabbed to the NCBWA first team as a designated hitter.
Howard was one of four players chosen to the Preseason All-America team who also earned first team All-NCBWA All-America honors last spring. He was joined in that group by Mesa State outfielder Kevin Becker, who earned All-America honors as a second baseman in 2009, Dowling College pitcher Gabriel Duran and Lynn University starting pitcher Dan Wright.

The association's Division II national poll voters and members of the association's board of directors selected the NCBWA Division II Preseason All-America teams from nominations submitted by sports information directors at NCAA Division II baseball-playing institutions.
The 2010 Division II Preseason All-America teams include 20 student-athletes who earned All-America honors last spring. A total of 40 schools had at least one representative on the Division II Preseason All-America teams. Angelo State led the way with six representatives on the teams, one first team selection, one second team selection and four third team selections.
The 2009 Daktronics Southeast Region Player of the Year, Howard (Bonneau, S.C./USC Salkehatchie) captured one of the most prolific regular seasons on offense in 2009 not only in USC Aiken and Peach Belt Conference history, but in NCAA Division II history.

Howard, who was also named to the All-Peach Belt Conference first team as a designated hitter, ended the 2009 season with 103 RBIs to tie Jason Jones' (Kennesaw State) PBC record of 103 originally set in 1998. He just missed out on tying the all-time NCAA Division II record of 104 set by Jarred McAlvain of Central Oklahoma in 1997.

Howard's proclivity to bring in runs in 2009 left him ending the year atop the NCAA Division II landscape in runs batted in and runs batted in per game. He is overall in the top 100 in NCAA Division II in 11 different offensive categories.
Howard had an incredible 38 extra-base hits in the 2009 regular season, finishing the regular season with 19 home runs, 16 doubles and three triples. The power numbers helped Howard own a slugging percentage of .694.??????The only player to be named the Peach Belt Conference Player of the Week three times in 2009, Howard ended the year in the top 10 in the Peach Belt Conference in 10 different offensive categories, including hits, runs scored, home runs, doubles, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, total plate appearances, at-bats and sacrifice flies.
Howard had 31 multiple hit games in 2009, finishing the year with 29 multiple RBI games, including four contests with five or more RBIs.
USC Aiken's 2009 baseball team ended the year tied with Central Missouri for 10th in the final Collegiate Baseball NCAA Division II Top 30 poll.
The final ranking of 10th was the highest for the 2009 Peach Belt Conference regular season champion under Thomas.

USC Aiken ended the 2008 season ranked 11th, while they concluded the 2005 season 12th.
The Pacers reached as high as No. 2 nationally in 2009 en route to their second ever Peach Belt Conference regular season championship. The regular season title was the first for the Pacers since 1994. The Pacers also have two PBC Tournament crowns, having won the league tournament in 1992 and 1993.
The Pacers' prowess during the regular season helped USC Aiken to top honors in the Southeast Region, enabling the program to host its second ever NCAA Division II Tournament regional.

The Pacers advanced to the regional final for the second consecutive season before bowing out to NCAA Division II Baseball Championship semifinalist and Conference Carolinas Tournament champion Belmont Abbey in the first game of the championship round.
USC Aiken (42-19) concluded its season having been a part of its fifth consecutive NCAA Division II Baseball regional.
The Pacers' 42 wins in 2009 leave the program entering the 2010 campaign with five consecutive 40-win seasons.

USC Aiken has been a participant in the NCAA Division II Tournament seven times (1992, 1993, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009).
The 2010 Pacers begin their season with a three-game home series against the South Atlantic Conference's Lincoln Memorial. USC Aiken's regular season opener will be at 4 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5 against the Railsplitters. The three-game set will conclude with 1 p.m. games on Saturday (Feb. 6) and Sunday (Feb. 7).

Indians improve to 5-8 with win over IMG~ 84-57

The USC Salkehatchie Indians got back on track tonight against IMG in the Polk State Holiday Inn Classic. Last night the Indians lost to Polk State in their opening game but tonight they got the win over IMG 84-57.

" I was very pleased with our over-all game today. We cut down on the mistakes and we got back on defense, something we have worked hard on as of late. I hope we do well in our Holiday Classic at home this weekend, it should be enjoyable," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians improve to 5-8 with their win today over IMG.

Two Indians win tournament awards~

Brandon Riley and Fred Hargrove were named to the Polk State Holiday Classic All-Tournament team. It was their hard work for the Indians in the two games that won them the honor, according to coach Garrett~" I was thrilled with the way Fred and Brandon played for us. It was great to see the effort the put forth in both games. I look for them to be the leaders down the stretch."

Indians fall to Polk State, fall to 4-8 on season

The Indians played hard last night against Polk State in the Holiday Inn Classic according to USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett, " We actually played great tonight. I was pleased with the over-all effort but we committed too many turnovers and we have to get rebounds."

The Indians lost by a final of 76-65.

The Indians were out rebounded by Polk State 48-23, something coach Garrett says can't happen, " When you play a good team like Polk State, you have to assert yourselves on the boards, we got beat on them last night. It is unacceptable 12-games into the season."

Another concern for coach Garrett was turnovers, " We committed 19-turnovers in the game, it is hard to win if you don't protect the ball better. I hope that we come out tonight and correct the mistakes we made against Polk State."
Leading the Indians:
Fred Hargrove~ 15 points
Brandon Riley~ 14 points

The Indians will be back in action this afternoon at 5:00 pm against IMG.

Aiken Tech (SC) will face Polk State in game 2 at 7:00 pm.
