Indians drop pair over weekend in GPC Thanksgiving Classic

The USC Salkehatchie men’s basketball team traveled to Decatur, Georgia over the weekend with high hopes of picking up their first win of the season but it wasn’t to be.

The Indians were playing in the annual ATC Thanksgiving classic located on the campus of Georgia Perimeter College. In their first game of the tournament, they were paired against the hosting team. In the early goings, the Indians jumped out to an 11-points lead but as the first half came to a close, they saw their lead diminish.

“I have to find a way to get our players to understand that to be successful; you have to play a complete game. I don’t know what I am going to have to do, to get it through some of the player’s heads but I am working on it, said Coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians lead at the half, 37-31.

In the second half, rebounds would dome the Indians. Coach Garrett said, “ We didn’t box out in the second half. I knew that we were going to have to step it up in the second half on the boards but the guys didn’t listen. If you are going to win games, you have to bang the boards.”

USC Salkehatchie Men's Basketball team ready for GPC Thanksgiving Classic

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball team left out for Decatur, Georgia this morning in preparation for this weekend's GPC Thanksgiving Classic.

The Indians are looking for their first win on the season but head coach Travis Garrett is still optimistic, "I am not really worried about our record, we just need to continue to get better as a team and understand that hard work pays off."

Coach Garrett went on to say that he thought his team was in a great position to make a run once region play starts, "We started slow last year but it how I schedule teams. I have stated before, it would be easy to schedule teams we could run up and down the court but I want to play teams that will make us better."

The Indians tip-off tonight at 8:00 pm and they will take the court again tomorrow at 1:00 pm.

USC Salkehatchie basketball team travels to Brunswick Georgia tonight, Tip-Off 7:30 pm

The USC Salkehatchie Indians men's basketball team travels to Brunswick, Georgia tonight for a key match-up against Coastal Georgia Community College.

The Mariners have started the season on fire, they come into tonight's match-up with the Indians with an over-all record of 6-0.

With key victories this season over St. John's River Community College and Brewton Parker, it should be a challenging match-up for the Indians.

"I scheduled some really good out of region teams this year. It would have been easy to schedule teams that we could just beat up and down the court but you don't get better as a team, by doing that. I want my guys to be challenged and I want every offense and defense they will see throughout the season, to be thrown at them early on," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians go into tonight's contest with a 0-5 record, tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

USC Salkehatchie announces the addition of Salk TV

It was about a month ago that I first tested Cover-It-live on the USC Salkehatchie athletic blog. If you had the chance to be on-line when we did our test run, you remember me telling you that it would give you the fan and parent a chance to follow the games while at work or if you were unable to attend in person. I took that idea to our athletic director Mrs. Jane Brewer and after some discussions, I think we have found a way to broadcast the games live via the Internet.

What this will mean to you, if you are at work during one of our weekday games, you will be able to come to this blog and the main athletic website and follow the link to view the games. If you follow South Carolina high school football, you may have heard that Byrnes high school broadcasts every football game via mogulus. I am sure that we will encounter many obstacles at first but I feel confident that with the help of Mr. Milton Harden and Mr. Bruce Coffin, our tech people on campus, we will be able to achieve our goals.

The main reason that I want to make this a reality, I understand that parents have to work and will be unable to physically attend every game. I know that watching via the Internet will not be the same as watching the Indians in person but it will give you a chance to follow them. I am hoping to start with a basketball game in order to get a feel of what it will take to make this happen. I also want to make parents and fans aware that we will not be able to carry every game throughout the season, only a select few.

I hope to sit down again with Mrs. Brewer and select the games that we feel will be the best fit, for you the parents and fans of the Indians. I have created the site for which the games will be viewed. If you would like to view this site, you can do so by clicking on the link provided here http://www.mogulus.com/salktv . I have a test video playing at this time but in the next week or so, I hope to have coaches interviews playing when a game is not being broadcast. I will also be able to play the games on a continuous loop, immediately following the live broadcast.

I hope that you will check this blog often for dates and times of future broadcasts. Once we get them ready, we will announce it both here and on our official website.

USC Salkehatchie drops a pair over the weekend, to fall to 0-5

The USC Salkehatchie Indians have struggled in their first five games of the season and Coach Travis Garrett is less than thrilled with his teams play, “In our first five games we have not been playing well at all. I have explained to the players that you will play like you practice and we haven't started clicking doing either. I told the kids after last night's loss to Middle Georgia that I can't teach them how to play with intensity, it has to come from the heart and as a player you have to want to succeed," said Coach Garrett.

Even though Coach Garrett says he has been disappointed, he has seen some positive things this season, "We have had some positives so far, we have been rebounding well and we are taking good shots. In the first few games we have been running the fast break well but again, we still have to learn to play an entire game with intensity", said Coach Garrett.

The Indians came out flat against Gulf Coast College, the #17th ranked team in the nation but turned things around in the second half with a strong defensive plan." I was excited after game one with Gulf Coast because they are a very talented team and we hung with them. If we would have been blown out by them, I could have expected it but we weren't, we played pretty good," said coach Garrett. In games against Central Florida and Middle Georgia, the Indians were never really in the contest. Against both teams, the Indians gave up over 90-points.Coach Garrett said, " It hurts that the guys don't understand yet about the importance of practicing hard but once they understand, I think we will turn things around and surprise some folks. I also have to be patient because we have a lot of freshman on this team and they are seeing better competition than they were accustomed to in high school."This past Friday night the Indians traveled to South Georgia Technical College in Americus, Georgia. The Indians found themselves behind from the outset with South Georgia jumping out to a 16-1 lead in the first half.
“You can't allow teams to jump on you early in games, especially after you explain to the kids before the game what to expect from their opponent," said Coach Garrett.

In the first half the Indians fell behind by 28-points at one point but they made a run to go into the half down 53-34.
In the second half the Indians would fight back against South Georgia, outscoring them 55-47 but it would be too little too late, the Indians lost by a final score of 100-89.
Coach Garrett said of his teams loss, "I would have to say that even though we lost tonight, I was impressed that the kids never gave up. It would have been easy for them to just pack it in after the fell behind early but after I spoke to them at half-time, they came out and gave their all, you can build on that."
Leading the Indians Friday night was Brandon Riley (Eatonton, Georgia) with 18-points and 4-rebounds, Gabe Mathis (Covinton, Georgia) 12-points and Chaze Williams (Branchville,
South Carolina) 12-points.

USC Salkehatchie men's and women's soccer season comes to a end at Region X tournament. The teams and coach Glass, excited about next season.

The USC Salkehatchie soccer season is finally over after what to some seemed like a eternity. The Indians both the men's and women's team grew by leaps and bounds if you were to ask me. I have confessed this before but I knew close to nothing about soccer beofore the season started. I grew up in the 1970's and as a youth, not many towns or schools played soccer in the south. I would kick a ball around at recess if we had one but I never watched the game on television, heck we only had three channels. I did know of Pale' (SIC), I read the sports pages in the Post and Courier (Charleston) every detail from stats to stories each day and I knew he was a great player.
When I first started watching the USC Salkehatchie soccer teams this season, I saw one thing missing and that was team unity. I then started noticing that the team and coach Glass grew closer with every passing day. I coached high school football for about eleven years and the one thing I know is that is you don't have that special bond between the players, you will be in for a long season. I noticed that once the season started and the players started to learn one another, they grew both on and off the field. I met coach Glass about the same time as the players and even though he is a quiet man, I have grown to understand that he has a special bond with his players and they respect him for the way he coaches. I have never noticed him getting extremely mad with his players but they seem to know when he has had enough. I watched the players as they grew with each passing match. It was great for me, a fan of sports to watch these young men and women grow as individuals and teammates throughout the season. I know that wins didn't come the way the players or coach Glass would have loved to see them but isn't sports more than wins and losses?

In sports when you start focusing more on winning than getting better as a unit, you lose focus of the big picture and that is getting better and learning life's hard lessons. I salute all the players on both the men's and women's soccer teams, you made the university proud with your performance on the field and the way you have conducted yourselves off the field.

The players and coach Glass are already talking about next season and all the great things that are to come. If this season was any indication of what we have in store for us in the future, I think we can all get excited about USC Salkehatchie soccer.

USC Salkehatchie softball 100-Inning game held Saturday November 1st, 2008

The USC Salkehatchie softball team held their annual 100-inning fundraiser game on Saturday and it was deemed a success by head coach Mitch Smith," I was thrilled with the way we played today, the girls gave their all and it was great. It was one of the nicest days we have had all year, the fans were here, it was just a great day."
The day was beautiful and all the fans in attendance seemed to enjoy watching the lady Indians on the field. During the 100-inning game, fans were treated to a chicken bog that was prepared by Mrs. Marian Esterlin. A silent auction was held and in the end, fans and players mingled and discussed the upcoming spring schedule.

The lady Indians are now done with the fall schedule, they will start back up in preparation for their spring schedule in January. To find out more about USC Salkehatchie softball or any of the sports offered at USC Salkehatchie, go to www.uscsalkathletics.com
