USC Salkehatchie Indians- CO-Champions of Region X, first Region X tournament game set

It's official, the USC Salkehatchie Indians basketball team became CO-Champions with Brunswick Community College for the Region X regular season title. The Indians did what the needed to do to become co-champions of Region X. They knew that they would need to win their final two games and have Brunswick Community College to lose one of their games over the weekend to become the outright Region X champions.

"I knew that we had to win if we wanted to win the Region X regular season championship outright. We did what we had to do on our end and Brunswick Community College did what they needed to do and I take my hat off to those guys. I am just looking forward to the Region X tournament and we are going work hard this weekend, prepare hard and focus on winning games once we get to the tournament," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

The Indians and Brunswick Community College both finished the regular season with the same Region X record but the Indians will have the #2 seed going into the tournament.

So, on Thursday March 5th, the Indians will face Denmark Technical College at 4:00 pm as they begin their march to become the Region X tournament champions.

The Indians and the Panthers of Denmark Technical College met twice during the regular season. In their first match-up in Walterboro, South Carolina, the Indians won by a final score of 97-83.

In their second match-up in Denmark, South Carolina the Indians again defeated the Panthers, 73-64.

Leading the Indians in their second match-up:
Larry Cox 23-points
Brandon Riley 18-points

Travis Wilkins 5-points

Bryant Julious 4-points

Javon Woodberry 4-points

Once we get closer to the Region X tournament in Shallotte, North Carolina, I will post directions and I will also let fans know what games we will be broadcasting "LIVE" over the Internet for fans that can't make the action.

On behalf of the USC Salkehatchie athletic department and all the fans that have followed the Indians, we would like to congratulate USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett and his team on a fine job in the regular season, NOW Let's Finish The Job!!

Still no word on scores for baseball from Allendale, SC against Surry CC

The USC Salkehatchie baseball team did get underway at 4:30 pm this afternoon. I was unable to make the event due to a prior commitment, once I get the final scores, I will have them for you here on the blog.

Again, the games are underway and the USC Salkehatchie Indians have lights, so as long as the rain holds off, we will continue to play.

The USC Salkehatchie baseball team is still ready to go at 4:30 pm against Surry Community College, as the tarp has been removed from the field. Photo's from Breast Cancer Awareness Kick-off with USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians-Red Hotts

USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians-Red Hotts, Breast Cancer Awareness Day~ Huge Success

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians traveled to Lexington, SC to kick-off Breast Cancer Awareness with the Red Hotts 11-and under Lexington fast-pitch recreational league softball team.

On a rainy day in Lexington, South Carolina the USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians were on hand to sign autographs, interact with the young players and give instruction on softball techniques. The Red Hotts were in awe of the Lady Indians as is evident in the photo's taken below. Many of the Red Hotts on hand, asked the girls what it was like to play college softball and things like how their uniforms looked and if they wore hats when they played.

The Red Hotts came up with the idea to bring attention to Breast Cancer Awareness one day at a practice.

"I was thinking these young ladies need to learn about giving back to their community. I want them to learn every aspect of softball but as a parent, I thought wouldn't it be great if they could learn something about giving back. It seems every time you open a newspaper, all you read about is kids getting in trouble, these girls are proving that if they set their mind to it, they can make a difference," said the Red Hotts head coach Trevor Kinard.

Even in a light down-pour the Lady Indians took the time to go out in the field and teach the Red Hotts the basics of softball. Many of the Lady Indians gave the players one on one time to teach them about playing their position on the field.

In what had to be one of the greatest days in USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians softball history, it was great to see our girls giving back to the community, it had to make me as proud as I have ever been.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith said, " Today is great, it shows that we have great girls that volunteered their time to come out and make a difference in these young girls life. I know that many of them will never forget what today is about. It is great for me as a coach to see the Lady Indians interact with the Red Hotts and see the looks on the little girls faces as we signed autographs and gave instruction, this is why I first got into coaching."

From the 1940s until recently, the rate of new cases of breast cancer in the United States increased by a little over one percent a year. In the 1980s the rate of new cases rose markedly (likely due to increased screening), and during the 1990s the rate of new cases leveled off. Since 2003 there has been a marked decline in the rate of new breast cancer cases. In 2008 alone, 182,460 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in American women alone. Worldwide, the figure is in the millions. Even though you would think breast cancer awareness raises enough money for research each year, much more is needed to eradicate it all together.

The Red Hotts of the Lexington recreation league will wear their USC Salkehatchie softball shirts with the pink ribbon on them during a game this season.

Coach Kinard said," We hope to raise awareness and money for research during the game in which we wear the shirts. I want to thank the USC Salkehatchie athletic department, Athletic Director- Mrs. Jane Brewer, Trent Kinard-Sports Information Director and Dean Ann Carmichael, for allowing the Lady Indians to be a part of this kick-off. I can never thank USC Salkehatchie enough for being here with us for this event. What today has shown me is the need for the two-year junior colleges in the state of South Carolina. The young ladies that attend USC Salkehatchie are some of the best young ladies, I have ever had the privilege of meeting."

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians are planning to raise awareness for breast cancer in the fall during one of the fall games.

If you would like to donate to the Red Hotts breast cancer awareness fund, you can contact their head coach Trevor Kinard at trevor.kinard@gmail.com

At the half-time of the USC Salkehatchie-Spartanburg Methodist basketball game tonight, fans were giving the chance to win an autographed basketball and t-shirt is they were able to hit a half-court shot. Only one person out of 30+ participants were able to make the shot.

Pernell Dollard of Hemingway, South Carolina and the brother of USC Salkehatchie basketball player, Bryant Julious was able to complete the feat and earn a signed basketball and t-shirt.

Dollard said," It was mostly luck. I have done it before in school just playing around but it was great to hit the shot tonight and win a basketball since this is my brother's last home game as a USC Salkehatchie Indian."

USC Salkehatchie basketball program holds celebration for sophomore players

In a night that started as a celebration, ended in celebration with a 71-65 victory over Spartanburg Methodist college.

To start the night, the USC Salkehatchie athletic department and USC Salkehatchie head basketball coach Travis Garrett presented the team's eight sophomore players with a team plague that recognized all their hard work both on the court and in the classroom while at USC Salkehatchie.

Tonight's game was the last to be played at home by this group of young men and in front of a capacity crowd, they celebrated their time at USC Salkehatchie with family and friends at mid-court prior to the game.

Indians basketball wins thriller over Spartanburg Methodist 71-65

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball program won a thriller in Walterboro, South Carolina tonight against the Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers. In what is fast becoming a major rival game for the Indians, the game went back and forth for much of the night. At the half, Spartanburg Methodist lead the Indians 33-30.

"I spoke to the guys at the half and it wasn't pretty. I am not taking anything away from the Pioneers but they shouldn't have been ahead of us at half-time. We were making bad shot selections and not working inside out, like we had discussed all week leading up to the game. I am thrilled that we got out of here with a win but I told the guys we have a ways to go if we want to win the Region X tournament," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

After the half, the Indians came out with a new fire and it was evident as they jumped out to 53-43 lead with 9:13 left in the second half. When things looked as though they were all but about over for the Pioneers, they went on a 9-0 run to pull within one-point 53-52 with 7:04 left in the game.

With 6:52 left in the game, the Indians still held on to a 1-point lead 55-54 but the Pioneers were hanging tough to stay with striking distance at any moment.

The Indians were about to extend their lead to 4-points 67-65 with 32.8 seconds left in the game.

The Pioneers had one final chance on a 3-points shot but it missed off the rim and Javon Woodbury was fouled and hit one of two from the free throw line to take a 69-62 lead. On the Pioneers last shot it was again wide and on a fast break, sophomore Larry Cox dunked one home to seal the victory 71-65.

You can see the final power dunk by sophomore Larry Cox below:

Leading the Indians in scoring:

Travis Wilkins: 14-points

Larry Cox: 12-points

DeAndre Blackmon: 2-points

Donald Simms: 3-points

Brandon Riley: 7-points

Javon Woodbury: 10-points

Charles Collins: 7-points

Bryant Julious: 8-points

J.R. Richardson: 1-point

Chaz Williams: 7-points

We are only four hours away from one of the most important basketball games in USC Salkehatchie history since restarting the program last season.
USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett said, "We have to remain focused and be ready for anything and everything that Spartanburg Methodist is going to throw at us tonight. I have explained to my guys that tonight is do or die, not in the overall scheme of things but if we want to earn a regular season Region X title, it means everything."

Tonight's game could go a long way in the Indians having a chance to win the regular season Region X title but what matters most is how you finish in the regular season final standings for your seeding at the Region X tournament.
Tonight will also be a special night as we prepare to bid farewell to our sophomore players that have entertained us for the past two seasons.

Attention USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians Softball Fans!!!

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians Softball game that was scheduled for this Friday against Columbia College, in Columbia, South Carolina has been cancelled. The Columbia College Koalas were unable to field enough players to have the game due to injuries and sickness.

The Lady Indians instead will be traveling to Lexington, South Carolina to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness with the Red Hotts. The Red Hotts are a little league softball program for 8 and 9 year old girls. They have decided that they want to help promote Breast Cancer Awareness and they have asked the USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians to team up with them to help in the fight.

The Lady Indians will be on hand to promote this and give the Red Hotts a small mini-camp in to help them hone in their skills. It will be a day of fun as the Lady Indians sign autographs, meet the young ladies and teach them about the importance of becoming not only a good athlete but a good student athlete.

USC Salkehatchie men's basketball team gets one step closer to Region X title hopes with win over Aiken Technical College

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball team headed to Aiken Technical College in Aiken, South Carolina tonight with one goal in mind-MUST WIN!!

USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett said, "I told the guys it didn't matter what the other teams that are tied with us for first place do, we have to win."

In the last game with Aiken Tech back on January 14th it took over-time to determine a winner as both teams, were face paced and running the court at will. The final score in their first match-up in overtime was USC Salkehatchie 84, USC Aiken 79.

In tonight's game, Aiken Tech had a game plan to try and slow down the Indians face paced offense but the Indians were able to overcome and win the game, 60-51.

"They tried to slow down our style as a fast paced offense and it worked for a while but in the end, we were able to overcome it and win the game. We have some unfinished business tomorrow night against Spartanburg Methodist at home, said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.
The Indians faced Spartanburg Methodist in Spartanburg, South Carolina earlier in the season, at the half they lead by 18-points 37-19.
After the loss to Spartanburg Methodist earlier in the season USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett said, " I told the kids at half-time that we had to come out prepared to play hard. I had watched the film of the Pioneers against Aiken Tech earlier in the season in which they were down 20-points at the half and almost came back and won. I knew this could happen if we didn't stay focused."
In their first match-up Spartanburg Methodist won by a final score of 63-57.

The Indians will be at home against Spartanburg Methodist in Walterboro, South Carolina tomorrow night, tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.

USC Salkehatchie Men's Basketball program in 4 way tie in Region X

As the Region X regular season rolls to an end, the Indians are in a 4-way tie for first play. What set up the 4-way tie, was Clinton Junior College surprising Aiken Tech at home on Monday night.

To win the regular season Region X, USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett said one thing must happen, "We have to win out! We can't wait for this team to beat this one or for something magical to happen, it is all on us."

It will all be on the Indians tonight against Aiken Technical College in Aiken, South Carolina and again Thursday night as they host Spartanburg Methodist College, Spartanburg, South Carolina.

History made at Benedict College today by USC Salkehatchie sophomore~Pitcher, Cea Knox

USC Salkehatchie sophomore pitcher Cea Knox (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) made school history today by becoming the first Lady Indian to pitch a no-hitter.

Knox, who was selected by the NJCAA as a pre-season top returning pitcher and position player (1B) by the NJCAA for district J-Region X, and today she proved she was worthy of the selection.

In a game against NCAA Division II Benedict College out of Columbia, South Carolina, Cea came out an threw her heart out. In a game on Saturday in Aiken, South Carolina in the Ringor Invitational, she was hit by a line-drive and was questionable going in today's game.

With her team behind her, she pitched a game for the record books and from this day forward she will always be remembered as the first Lady Indian to throw a no-hitter in school history.

USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith said, "This no-hitter was a complete team effort. The girls played their hearts out and rallied around Cea to make this happen, I am so proud of this entire team. I know what we are capable of and today proved it. I can't wait to see how the rest of this season plays out."

I have checked the NJCAA record books and I am waiting on a reply from Mark Krug, the NJCAA sports information director on an answer. I can't find a single no-hitter in a Division 1 softball tournament game but I find one in Division 2 and several in Division 3. I know this was not a tournament game but it will be interesting to see how many no-hitters are thrown throughout a season in any division. I will post my findings as soon as they become available.

On behalf of the USC Salkehatchie athletic department, we would like to congratulate Cea Knox and the entire Lady Indians softball team on today's feat.

Lady Indians Back on track after two wins against Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians must feel as they are back on track after two strong wins against NCAA Division II Benedict College today in Columbia, South Carolina.

In game one of the double-header, the Lady Indians defeated the Lady Tigers 12-2 with sophomore-Katie Henderson ( Rock Hill, South Carolina) on the mound. The Lady Indians jumped out to an early lead as they got their bats going early.
USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith said, " I was extremly happy to see our team come out today and rebound from a tough weekend. It was great to see them begin to gel as a team and understand that when you work together, great things happen. It was a great showing and every player on this team should be proud of themselves."

In game two, pitcher sophomore Cea Knox (Myrtle Beach, South Carolina) went for the Lady Indians on the mound and she pitched the best game of her career and the best game in school history. On Saturday, she was hit in her pitching arm by a line-drive and it was questionable whether she would be able to pitch in today's game. However, as game time arrived, she came with her A-game and threw the first no-hitter in school history.
"Today's proformance by Cea Knox was one that I as a coach will never forget. It was a great pitching moment but what made it better was the way the team played around here and rallied around her. It was an overall team no-hitter and that is something as a coach, I can't describe the pride it brought. I have to say that today made me understand that this group of girls give their all and that is all I have ever asked of them, if they continue on this path, the sky is the limit," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith.
The Lady Indians would win it's second contest of the day by a final score of 9-0.

The Lady Indians are now 8-10 on the season and 2-0 in Region X.

USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians look to rebound against Benedict College in Columbia, SC ~Tuesday afternoon!

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians look to rebound against Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina tomorrow afternoon. The Lady Indians are coming off a rough showing in the Ringor Invitational in Aiken, South Carolina over the weekend.

Tomorrow's game is a double-header with the first game starting at 2 pm and the second game scheduled to start around 4 pm. As soon as the results become available, I will have them posted to the blog.

The Lady Indians have been playing very well thus far this season but several bad breaks have cost them early on. The Lady Indians bright spot is the fact that they are 2-0 in Region X play.

It is very early in the season but I look for the Lady Indians to finish strong and I have stated this before, this has to be one of the most talented team under USC Salkehatchie head coach Mitch Smith's direction. He does one of the best jobs in the NJCAA in getting his teams ready to play and I can assure you, after this weekend's disappointing showing, he will have his girls ready to play come tomorrow!

Middle Georgia has Lady Indians number in final game of Ringor Invitational in Aiken, South Carolina

Invitational, Aiken, South Carolina

The USC Salkehatchie Lady Indians must feel as though they have played Middle Georgia enough for one season after today's loss in their final game of the Ringor Invitational in Aiken, South Carolina.

The Lady Indians have faced Middle Georgia three times this season and all three games have ended with the same result, the Lady Indians coming up on the losing end.

Today on a windy and cold morning, the Lady Indians were unable to slow down the offense of Middle Georgia as they lost by a final of 9-1.

In the Ringor Invitation tournament, the Lady Indians played 5-games but they were only able to come away with 1-win which came against Patrick Henry. The Lady Indians over-all record in the tournament was 1-4.

The Lady Indians will have to regroup in a hurry as they travel to Columbia, South Carolina to take on Benedict College(http://www.benedict.edu/exec_admin/athletics/softball/bc-softball.html) on Wednesday (February 24th) for a double-header. The first game is scheduled for 2 pm and the second around 4 pm.

After the journey to Columbia to take on Benedict College on Wednesday the 24th, they will turn right back around and head to Columbia, South Carolina for the second time in the week to take on the Fighting Koalas of Columbia College(http://www.gokoalas.com/sports/sball/index) in a double-header scrimmage. The first game of the double-header is scheduled for 3 pm and the second for 5 pm.

After this weekend's Ringor Invitational Tournament, the Lady Indians overall record now stands at 7-10 and they remain 2-0 in Region X.
