The Salkehatchie Indians men’s soccer team lost a scrimmage to Newberry by a score of 6-1 on Saturday. The lone goal by
the Indians came on a direct free kick taken by Ryan Dickson of Portadown, Northern Ireland in the 27th minute.
After a dummy run by Chris Roulston of Queensland, Australia Dickson calmly lofted the ball just over the Newberry wall
with enough topspin to curve it just inside the Newberry far post from 30 yards out.
The scrimmage was divided into three 30 minute segments and Coach Sam Opoku of Newberry used the first two segments to try out some new players and combinations of new players and returning players. The Indians did very well in the first two segments but were no match for the Newberry starters who came on with fresh legs for the final 30 and proceeded to take the Indians to school. “By the time Newberry got their starters out there we had lost several Salkehatchie starters to minor injuries and fatigue,” said Indians Head Coach Bill Glass, “they were then able to use their height advantage to good effect against a patchwork back line.” Nevertheless Glass saw reasons for optimism. “The guys played hard for 90 minutes and were still getting after it right up to the final buzzer despite a discouraging score line,” according to Glass, “the guys did a lot of good things out there and overall I am pleased with the effort.”
