Former USC Salkehatchie Indian Gary Owens playing in Kansas Jayhawk league~for the Hayesville Heat

Former USC Salkehatchie Indian baseball player Gary Owens is currently playing in the Jayhawk league for the Haysville Heat.

Gary is currently hitting .387 in 12-games for the heat, with 1-home run. The Heat are leading their division with a 9-3 record.

"I hope that I can get picked up after the season. I am working on my game and we will see what happens," said Owens.

USC Salkehatchie soccer recruit- Jon Parker earns player of year honors for his play at the high school level~

After a crazy season, Jon Parker can enjoy some of the more low-key offerings of this time of year.

The Beaufort High midfielder, who graduated this week, has earned a spot in a prestigous select game. He recently signed to play college soccer. His final season with the Eagles in the rear-view, Parker is the Island Packet/Beaufort Gazette Boys Soccer Player of the Year for steadiness in helping lead Beaufort High to an improbable region championship and within a victory of the Lower State title game -- and for the recognition that followed.

The Eagles changed coaches late in the season and required a late surge to pull even with three other teams from Region 8-AAAA. A tie-breaker earned them the region's top seed. They eventually bowed out to Irmo, the country's top-ranked team.
"I feel like we could have done better, but you can only do your best," Parker said. "We accomplished everything any other Beaufort High team has."
After the season, Parker signed with USC Salkehatchie, joined by teammates Mac Bustard and Hayden Cormier, a defender who certainly earned consideration for this honor. In July, Parker will compete in the Clash of the Carolinas, an all-star event pitting some of the best players from South Carolina against their counterparts from the North.

Indians baseball inks another player for next season~

Jolley signs with USC Salkehatchie:

Brandon Jolley has signed to play baseball next season at USC Salkehatchie. Jolley finished his career at Polk County High School owning school records for hits (101), runs (86), multi-hit games (27), wins (27) and strikeouts (198).

USC Salkehatchie early orientation at Allendale campus

USC Salkehatchie held it's early freshman orientation today in Allendale, South Carolina. Many incoming athletes were in attendance. USC Salkehatchie will be having another freshman orientation in August.

Record 175 NJCAA Baseball Players Selected in 2010 MLB Draft

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Big league talent was readily available in NJCAA baseball this season and many Major League Baseball teams were paying attention. MLB teams again looked to the ranks of the NJCAA to fill the needs of their clubs as a record 175 NJCAA baseball players were selected in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player draft, which was held over the past three days (June 7-9). The 175 players selected from the organization breaks the previous record of 161 NJCAA players that were taken in the 2007 draft.

Last year 155 NJCAA players were selected. Of the 175 NJCAA players selected 22 were Division I All-Americans, four were Division II All-Americans and two received Division III All-American honors.

Also two 2010 NJCAA Rawlings Gold Glove winners were selected.

The 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft was highlighted by the selection of College of Southern Nevada's Bryce Harper with the No. 1 overall pick by the Washington Nationals. Harper is the first player from a two-year college to be selected with the No. 1 overall pick.

Hemingway’s Brown signs with USC Salkehatchie basketball team

Jalill Brown, a senior at Hemingway High School, signed with USC Salkehatchie in Allendale, SC to play collegiate basketball. Joining Brown for the May 27th signing were Barry McFadden, left, HHS administrative assistant and varsity boys’ basketball Coach, mother, Mary Ann Brown and Levi Keith, principal of HHS. Brown was a member of the 2009-2010 Class A state champion basketball team, defeating Great Falls 66-68 in March. Brown played a pivitol role in that victory, hitting five of six free throws down the stretch to sew up the Tiger victory.

USC SALKEHATCHIE BASKETBALL PROGRAMS NEWEST RECRUITS

USC Salkehatchie head basketball coach Travis Garrett is known not to shy away from top players in his recruiting efforts. Anyone who would need further proof need look no further than the Indians latest signee.Darien Booker, a 6-foot-8, 240-pound center from Union High School, officially signed with Salk Wednesday, becoming the Indians biggest recruit to date.If the name sounds familiar, it should. Booker is the younger brother of former Clemson standout Trevor Booker.“Darien’s mentor is a good friend of mine, and he kind of let me know that he was available,” Garrett said. “A lot of the kids I’ve already recruited knew him too, so sometimes kids recruit other kids. He definitely gives us a high level type player. He has a chance to come in here and really make an impact. He’s got those Booker genes, so we know he will come in here and play hard and rebound.”Booker’s National Letter of Intent capped a huge seven days of signings for the Indians, who added three more players to their growing class.Jaleel Brown, a 6-3, 190-pound wing player from Hemingway signed May 27, while Donte Schuler a 6-1 combo guard from Dutch Fork was expected to sign Thursday. Schuler averaged 14.6 points per game during his senior season for the Silver Foxes.“He is a real tough-minded player,” Garrett said. We had him in for a workout a couple weeks ago, and he looked great. The big key is he will come in and play hard.”Salkehatchie also signed Sedrick Garrett, a 6-4, 215 pound guard from Beth Haven High School in Louisville, Kentucky. He averaged 18 points and six rebounds per game during his senior season.“He’s a physical guy,” Travis Garrett said. “He can play inside an out, and he’s a guy that can come in here and help us.”

USC Salkehatchie basketball camp HUGE success this week!

Coach Garrett enjoyed teaching the basics to 6-9 year olds. Campers worked on correct shooting, dribbling, defensive stance and much more. "I love teaching young kids the game of basketball. It is great to watch them when the make a shot or learn to dribble. I want to thank everyone for coming out this week and I hope we will have even more next week," said USC Salkehatchie head basketball coach Travis Garrett.

Slow days of summer!

Hello everyone,

I know that during the summer, traffic slows to a crawl here on the official USC Salkehatchie athletic blog. During the summer months most of our news consists of signings, camps and the ocassional interesting tid-bit we can find about past teams. I say all of this to ask you to be patient and make sure you check the blog often throughout the summer months for all the latest USC Salkehatchie Indians athletic news. I will have camp photo's up in the next several weeks, along with any breaking news.

Sam Crosby a special player~

USC Salkehatchie head baseball coach Bubba Dorman doesn’t mince words when it comes to his feelings about Indians sophomore designated hitter Sam Crosby.“If I had 30 guys like Sam Crosby, we’d win the national championship,” Dorman said Friday. “He’s a young man with a tremendous spirit and a great attitude. You can’t have enough of those guys around.”Those credentials, among others, were enough to earn the former Colleton County High School player the Dannelly-Baxter Coaches Award for the 2010 baseball season.

The honor, given only sparing to players who meet its rigorous criteria, is perhaps the most sought after award within Salk’s program.“The award is something that (assistant) Coach (Jeff) Wicker, and I decided we would do,” Dorman said. “It’s pretty special. This is only the second time we have given one out in five years, and most of it is based off of work ethic, being a team player, having an ability to be coached and go the extra mile. A lot of extra things go into that, but we felt like Sam more than met that. We haven’t had a young man come though here in a while with the spirit that he has.”Not bad for a player who didn’t start on his high school team, was cut from his American Legion club and played only sparingly as a walk-on for the Indians over the past two seasons.Still, it was a love of the game and willingness to improve that impressed Dorman the most.

“Sam wasn’t a young man that played a whole lot for us, but he was a young man who spent a whole lot of time sitting down with me looking at film, and he spent a whole lot of time in the cage with Coach Wicker,” Dorman said. “He really made a bunch of strides, and it was because he’s got a work ethic that quite honestly you don’t see in a whole lot of young people these days. By the time he left here, he’d actually become a pretty doggone god hitter.”Crosby batted .250 in 24 at-bats for the 2010 season, appearing in 15 games. He also showed respectable power numbers in limited play with two doubles and a home run in his final game, a start at designated hitter against rival Spartanburg Methodist.

“This was probably Sam’s only chance to play college baseball, Dorman said. “He worked hard, and he hung in there long enough to get some playing time. He ran one out of there. It was just a testament to his hard work and dedication.”

Knight signs with Salkehatchie baseball

GRANITEVILLE -- Midland Valley High School football coach Rick Knight has been to his fair share of signing ceremonies. He's been there to support players when they've signed to play college sports.On Wednesday, Knight was on hand for another signing. This time he wasn't there as a coach but as a father. His son, Midland Valley senior Christopher Knight, signed his letter of intent to play college baseball at USC Salkehatchie.

"I'm very proud," Rick Knight said. "I'm glad he's got the opportunity. He's worked very hard for it."A three-sport athlete at Midland Valley - he played football, basketball and baseball - Christopher Knight will narrow his focus to the diamond for college. That's not to say he'll neglect his studies."One of his best assets is he understands the priorities as a student-athlete and puts the student first," said Mustangs baseball coach Garrett Holmes.

"He's hard-working and an outstanding kid."Knight plans to begin his work toward a degree in secondary education at USC Salkehatchie - a two-year school. He said he wants to become a teacher and coach when he gets his degree.Before then, he's focused on doing the best he can - in the classroom and on the field. Knight said that when he leaves USC Salkehatchie, he hopes it's for a four-year institution where he can complete his studies and continue to play baseball."I want to go there and do big things in my two years, then go to a four-year school," Knight said.

Potential transfer schools include South Carolina and Georgia Southern, which he contemplated attending immediately. He also considered Spartanburg Methodist, another two-year institution. But he was focused on USC Salkehatchie after visiting."The coach was really nice, I liked the atmosphere and the field is really nice," he said of the school approximately 50 miles from Aiken. "The classrooms are small and you get more attention from the teacher. It's like high school."Holmes said that Knight was one of his best hitters and he expects him to have success in college.
He's not sure if Knight will remain a second baseman but is confident he'll excel wherever he plays.

USC Salkehatchie baseball signs player from Bluffton High School~

When deciding where to continue his athletic career, Travis Boulware was looking for a place that would provide a challenge.
He found a rather familiar one at USC-Salkehatchie, where he signed a letterof intent Wednesday to play college baseball next fall.

Boulware plans to compete for a starting position at USC-Salkehatchie, much like he's had to do his last two years at Bluffton High School.

"I think I'm going to go in there and work hard and try to take over," Boulware said. "I don't know who they have starting right now, but I'm ready to go take the job."

Boulware spent the majority of his junior year with the Bobcats as a backup before earning his way into the lineup this season. He stayed there for the year and hit .268 and provided some power, hitting three home runs and a triple.

"I learned that you have to keep working hard, no matter what your current situation is," Boulware said. "I still worked hard for my senior year. I toughed it out and got ready for my senior year. ... I'll play in the preseason (at USC-Salkehatchie) and try to prove myself there."

McMains signs with USC Salkehatchie

SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -- At Johnson High School... Jessica McMains signs a soccer scholarship agreement to USC-Salkahatchie... a junior college in South Carolina.
After two years at Salkahatchie... McMains plans to transfer to the University of South Carolina. She plans to study either forensic psychology or go into veternary medicine.
She told us what she was thinking when signing the papers. "Just going to the next level, going from high school to college level, it's an amazing feeling," said McMains. "It's a junior college and that's what I was shooting for. It was a good opportunity to play soccer but not have it consume your life as a student."

Indians ink another USC Salkehatchie women's soccer player~

PETTICOAT JUNCTION -- Beronica Lopez wasn't expecting her soccer career to last beyond high school. The Silver Bluff senior was basically playing the game for fun and really didn't see it as a potential ticket to college.

Then Bill Glass showed up at one of the Lady Bulldogs' games. The USC Salkehatchie head coach immediately identified Lopez's talent and saw the forward as a player that could help his program.

"I appreciated the aggressiveness that she has and the energy that she put into the game," said Glass. "I thought she had the potential to be a good college soccer player, and I thought that starting out at a Junior College would help."After some discussion, the process was finalized, and on Wednesday Lopez signed her official letter of intent to play at USC Salkehatchie.

"I was really nervous at first, but now I'm just excited," said Lopez after receiving congratulations from Silver Bluff athletic director Al Lown. "I was intent to just play high school, and I really didn't think I was good enough to play college soccer until he came."Lopez indicated that she expected increased intensity and time of practice to be the biggest adjustment at the college level, but according to Glass, the hard work usually pays off in the end.

Socastee's Jake Davis signs with USC Salkehatchie Baseball~Video below!

At Socastee High, Jake Davis signed to play college baseball at USC-Salkehatchie. Davis hit .314 his senior year at Socastee. After playing four years of high school ball under coach John Daurity at Socastee, Davis will play in the outfield for the Indians next fall. He says it has always been his goal to play at the college level.
