The USC Salkehatchie Indians came out tonight against Cape Fear CC with very little energy and it showed early.
USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett, "I don't understand our teams mentality right now, we knew that Cape Fear was a quality team but we failed to show up for much of the first half. We can't expect to be able to come back against any team in Region X, our entire Region is quality from top to bottom."
The Indians would fall behind early on back to back three points by Cape Fear's Anthony Vanhook who would end with 32-points on the night.
With 7:31 left in the first half, the Indians were down 36-21.
"I called a time-out and told the guys that if we didn't wake up and wake up soon, this game was going to get out of reach. We did wake up and play our style of fast paced basketball and got the game manageable right before the half," said Garrett.
The score at the half was Cape Fear CC 48, USC Salkehatchie 40.
In the second half, the Indians would finally tie the game at 52-52 with 12:14 remaining. It would go back and forth until around the 5:00 minute mark when the Indians took a 3-point lead 69-66.
The Indians struggled all night on the boards, causing coach Garrett to shout out, "I can't go to Walmart and buy you guys rebounds." It seemed to work as the Indians started out rebounding the Sea Devils down the stretch.
The Indians lead by one point (81-80) with 1:12 before sophomore Ismail Howard drove the lane to ice the game.
The final was USC Salkehatchie 85, Cape Fear CC 80.
The Indians are 17-11 overall and 5-4 in Region X.
