The Indians women’s soccer team lost to Oxford Emory on Sunday by a score of 7-0. "The score was not indicative of the way the team played," according to Salkehatchie Head Soccer Coach Bill Glass, "it was more a reflection of the problem we have with injuries and the resulting inability to field a full soccer team at these matches."
The Indians started out playing with just ten players instead of the regulation eleven. In a gesture of good sportsmanship the visitors also played with just ten players although they, unlike the Indians, could have fielded eleven players. Like Salkehatchie, Oxford Emory was very short on healthy players arriving in Allendale with just twelve players.
The Indians lost Desiree Wickham of Marathon NY, to an asthma attack and Emily Thompson of Lexington SC, to a severe ankle injury. Later Lindsey Jones of Hampton fell victim to heat exhaustion. The Lady Indians soon found themselves playing with only seven players to Oxford Emory's 10.
"The ladies made a valiant effort and showed tremendous fortitude under difficult circumstances," said Glass, "they continued to play in a well organized manner throughout the match and never let up."
The lady Indians will be back in action August 26th against Columbia College, the game will be played in Columbia.
