Well everyone, basketball season is fast approaching and the news today that a 73-year old grandfather has made the Roane State Raiders basketball squad in Tennessee was too much to let it pass us by. I was shocked when I opened today's paper and found out that a man, Ken Mink missed out on his second year of Junior College basketball 53 years ago when he joined the Air Force. It's something he's always regretted. Today, he's one of the Roane State Raiders and, at 73, possibly one of the oldest collegiate players in history.
I then thought about the young players that come out for colleges all over America, to play the game they love, basketball. I thought about the fact that many of them will complain when they get a bump or bruise. I invite them all to read about Mr. Mink and how he regretted missing out on something he loved. It is going to take more hard work for Mr. Mink to get out of bed, then it will for the average 18-20 year old but he seems dedicated to doing his best.
I applaud you Mr. Mink for your determination to make the team, at 73-years old, you could have just taken your social security and watched the sunsets at home. No, lady's and gentlemen, he decided to live out his life long dream of playing the game he loved.
We could all use Mr. Mink as a source of inspiration the next time we don't feel like going to work, practice or school. He has shown us all that with a little hard work and determination, anything is possible!
