Sit down with USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett

Q: It's been a tough season thus far coach as your team sits at 1-9. However, you always seem to schedule the top 10 teams each year in the NJCAA, why?

A: I try and schedule teams that will make us better, I could schedule teams to get an easy win but I think that hurts you in the long run. I want us guys to be ready when it comes time to start the region because we will be facing tough teams then.

Q: Your team has committed over 200 turnovers thus far. What are you doing to try and correct this.

A: I have been trying to explain to the kids, they need to simplfy their game. I want them to go back to the basics of bounce passes, chest passes etc. They have to learn to try and not do too much.

Q: With just 8 games before you start Region X play, what are you doing to get the team ready for Region X?

A: We are playing quality teams that every year have the chance to make it the NJCAA tournament. I want us to come together as a unit and learn to play together. We have a very talented team and I think once we get into the region people will see just how talented.

Q: This Friday and Saturday, we are having our 2nd annual Quizno's USC Salkehatchie Holiday Tournament, We have some big name teams coming to participate, what can fans expect?

A: Fans will get to see some quality basketball teams and players that are being recruited by some major NCAA teams. As far as the tournament itself, I think it will promote the town of Walterboro and the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie. It will give exposure to the town and the school to fans across the southeast.

Q: Coach Garrett, you are in your fourth season at USC Salkehatchie. What are some of the positive strides that have been made since you arrival?

A: First, no one expected us to compete and win the Region X championship in only our second year. The facility has been upgraded each season, the floor, the pads on the end of the court, lights etc. This season, we added new bleachers and they really bring out the gym. I would like to thank Dean Ann Carmichael, Mark Craig and athletic director Mrs. Jane Brewer for all their support that have shown athletics over the years.
