Region X Rival BRCC cancels baseball season (By Dean Hensley Times-News Staff Writer)
The Blue Ridge Community College athletic director on Monday called each of the school's baseball players, one by one, with grim news: the 2010 season was canceled.
"It definitely surprised me, because they made the announcement so late. It was just two days before the season was supposed to start," said junior outfielder Ethan Pressley, a former North Henderson standout. "It left us in the dark as to what we are supposed to do, where we are supposed to play."
President Molly Parkhill made the announcement to the public Wednesday in a press release.
"The number of eligible student athletes has declined during the past few weeks due to academic progress and injury," Parkhill said. "Without a requisite number of players we were forced to cancel the season.
"We are working closely with those affected student athletes interested in pursuing their athletic and educational goals through other junior college programs."
There were only 10 players ready for the upcoming season, according to Lee Anna Haney, a spokeswoman for the college.
"That's not enough for a college baseball team," she said. "We were really anticipating having a team this season, but since there was such a decline in eligible students and an increase in the number of injured players, we were forced to make the decision."
The team played a fall schedule and ended up canceling four of its last six games because of its depleted roster.
