Indians basketball wins thriller over Spartanburg Methodist 71-65

The USC Salkehatchie men's basketball program won a thriller in Walterboro, South Carolina tonight against the Spartanburg Methodist Pioneers. In what is fast becoming a major rival game for the Indians, the game went back and forth for much of the night. At the half, Spartanburg Methodist lead the Indians 33-30.

"I spoke to the guys at the half and it wasn't pretty. I am not taking anything away from the Pioneers but they shouldn't have been ahead of us at half-time. We were making bad shot selections and not working inside out, like we had discussed all week leading up to the game. I am thrilled that we got out of here with a win but I told the guys we have a ways to go if we want to win the Region X tournament," said USC Salkehatchie head coach Travis Garrett.

After the half, the Indians came out with a new fire and it was evident as they jumped out to 53-43 lead with 9:13 left in the second half. When things looked as though they were all but about over for the Pioneers, they went on a 9-0 run to pull within one-point 53-52 with 7:04 left in the game.

With 6:52 left in the game, the Indians still held on to a 1-point lead 55-54 but the Pioneers were hanging tough to stay with striking distance at any moment.

The Indians were about to extend their lead to 4-points 67-65 with 32.8 seconds left in the game.

The Pioneers had one final chance on a 3-points shot but it missed off the rim and Javon Woodbury was fouled and hit one of two from the free throw line to take a 69-62 lead. On the Pioneers last shot it was again wide and on a fast break, sophomore Larry Cox dunked one home to seal the victory 71-65.
