Matt Arant’s days in a baseball uniform won’t end after his final season with Calhoun Academy. The Cavaliers’ pitcher signed a letter of intent on Wednesday to play for USC Salkehatchie. Indians head coach Bubba Dorman first saw Arant play with Post 4 this past summer.
After watching the senior’s efforts at Mirmow Field, Dorman was impressed.“I liked the speed he played the game and his actions on the field,” Dorman said. “He’s a quick-twitched young man that has an idea about playing baseball the right way.
So when I saw him this summer, I just thought he would be a good fit for our program.”Dorman believes Arant will either pitch or play in the outfield.
However, there is a possibility that he could fill roles at both positions.“I like two-way guys,” Dorman said. “If it doesn’t work one way, he could play the other way. If it doesn’t work out on the mound, he can move to the outfield. That just gives us more options.”Arant is one of a few early signees for the Indians and Dorman can’t wait to have him on the team.
