Recap: 2/10/10
Lady Indians Softball
College of Coastal Georgia vs. USC Salkehatchie
Game 1:

With wind gusts up to 40 mph’s and the temperature around game time reaching a high of around 35 degrees, the USC Salkehatchie Indians played host to a familiar foe in the College of Coastal Georgia at their home field in Allendale, S.C. on February 10, 2010.

As the weather was cold and lips quickly got chapped, Coastal Georgia got on the board in the top of the first inning. After the first batter led off the game with a single and the third batter of the inning tagged the first pitch to center field for a double, the Lady Mariners were on the board with a lead of 1 – 0.

The Lady Indians did not take long to strike back. Alyssa Chambers (So., Goose Creek, S.C.) led the inning off by reaching first base off of an error by the first baseman and Gwenell Crawford (Fr., Yulee, Fl.) laced the 1 – 2 pitch to left field for a single, the Indians had runners on first and second, but a costly error by the left fielder allowed Chambers to score and left Crawford at second base. After reaching third off of a fielder’s choice, Crawford would score off a hit by Marquita Wilson (Fr., West Columbia, S.C.). The score at the end of the first inning was USC Salkehatchie 2, Coastal Georgia 1.

The game would remain scoreless until the top of the third. After the first batter reached base with a hit to right field, the Lady Indians would get the next two batters out. With two outs, the old but new demons would come back to haunt the Lady Indians as a costly two out error would cost the Indians a run to make the score 2 – 2.

The score would remain tied until the top of the fifth when the Lady Mariners would go on the attack again as the Indians got the first two batters of the inning out. After an error, a passed ball and two back to back singles, the score would be Coastal Georgia 4, USC Salkehatchie 2.

The Indians would not take long to get back in the game. With Amanda Karn (So., Taylors, S.C.) leading off the inning with an infield single and Chambers following her with a hit up the middle the Indians had runners on first and second with no outs. Crawford would bat next and take the free pass to first base to load the bases with no outs.

With no outs, the Symone Nettles (So., Lamar, S.C.) would reach off an error by the pitcher and Karn would score. After Wilson would reach off a fielder’s choice, Crystal Long (Fr., Myrtle Beach, S.C.) would record her first hit of her college career, her first double and her first RBI’s in one swing of the bat. Crawford, Nettles, and Wilson would all cross the plate off the two out double to put USC Salkehatchie back on top 6 – 4.

The Lady Mariners would once again prove to be up to the challenge in the top of the sixth. With the lead off batter reaching first to lead off the inning for the third time of the day and the second batter reaching off a single up the middle, and a costly misplayed grounder by the outfielder would allow the Lady Mariners to score and have a runner on third with one out. After a sacrifice fly, the score would be tied up once again at 6 all.

The game would go into extra innings with both teams recording a run in the eighth inning, but the College of Coastal Georgia would score three in the ninth and the Indians would only be able to plate on run as Chambers would score off a single by Wilson. The final score would be College of Coastal Georgia 10, USC Salkehatchie 8.

Crawford would lead the way for the Indians going 2 – 4, with 2 runs scored and one walk. Wilson would also record 2 hits going 2 – 5, with 1 run scored and 2 RBI’s. Chambers, Nettles, and Long would all record hits on the day with Long recording a double.

Samantha Martin (1-2) (Fr., North Charleston, S.C.) would take the loss in the hard fought marathon going all 9 innings, giving up 13 hits, 10 runs, 4 earned runs, 1 walk and striking out 4 batters.

Game 2:

With the temperature slowly dropping, the Indians had to find a way to get hot early in the second game of the twin bill and just like the last time Leigha Hite (Fr., Leesville, S.C.) faced the College of Coastal Georgia, the game would go very quickly as for the first three innings, as it looked to be a pitcher’s dual.

After the College of Coastal Georgia getting on the board in the bottom of the first off a two out error, the game would remain 1 – 0 until the bottom of the third inning.

Alyssa Chambers (So., Goose Creek, S.C.) would record a hit up the middle and would later reach second off of a fielder’s choice. Marquita Wilson (Fr., West Columbia, S.C.) would step to the plate and smoke the 1 – 2 pitch to right center for a double and Chambers would score the first run of the inning. Crystal Long (Fr., Myrtle Beach, S.C.) would step to the plate again with a chance to be big for the Indians as she did when she laced the 2 – 2 pitch into right field for a single and scoring Wilson. The score at the end of the 3rd inning was USC Salkehatchie 2, College of Coastal Georgia 1.

With Hite motoring along on the mound, the Lady Indians would put one more on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs Amanda Karn (So., Taylors, S.C.) would reach off a base on balls, Chambers would step to the plate and record for her second hit of the game by lacing a double to centerfield, putting runners on second and third. Karn would score on the next pitch as the Lady Mariners recorded a passed ball and Karn would cross the plate. At the end of the fourth inning the score was USC Salkehatchie 3, College of Coastal Georgia 1.

The Lady Indians would put one more on the board as Wilson would reach base in the top of the fifth off of an error by the short stop and would swipe second base for her first stolen base of her young college career. She would later score off of a passed ball to make the score USC Salkehatchie 4, College of Coastal Georgia 1 which would prove to be the final score.

Chamber would go 2 for 4 at the plate with a run scored. Wilson would record a double and score 2 runs. Long would also record a hit, with one run scored and a RBI.

Hite (1 – 2), would get her first win of her college career going 7 innings, giving up 4 hits, 1 run, 0 earned runs, 0 walks and 4 stikeouts. After 3 complete games and 17 innings pitched, Hite’s era is an outstanding 0.00.
